As for Kevin Costner: well, OF COURSE, he was in love with her. He still is. CASE IN POINT: there are actors who have great chemistry, indeed, but what makes The Body Guard such an enduring classic is not the plot, or even the classic-in-its-own-right soundtrack (although it certainly helps), or the skills the two fine lead actors demonstrated -- and Whitney was a very good, intuitive and charismatic actress with range, even on this, her first major film effort. What makes the film a classic is that we see in near realtime something far deeper and far more electric than mere good connection and ease between the leads. Whitney and Kevin were the perfect, the only actors, for this role. But that is the power of this film: they're NOT acting. That thing between them mesmerizes, and you can see it, feel it, know it. It's all there, from the first moment they encounter each on the screen for the first time to their iconic closing shot. No leading lady in any of Costner's films and television performances EVER elicited that thing, that vibe, that gaze, that longing, that presence from Kevin the way Whitney Houston did. Enquire of any of the original viewers of the film, film professors in every school from Howard to Harvard today, and kids seeing the film for the first time: none of us might remember the finer points of plot, the elaborate set scenes, the fashion-forward costuming, the allusions to Diahann Carroll and Paul Newman, the very fine supporting cast. But we will NEVER forget that thing between Whitney and Kevin.It all pivots on them. As to their being together in that way, that is probably the best-known, most recognized "secret" in the world.
