Nice one. Lots of fond memories and reminders of locations close to places we lived in the borough (we moved about a bit as the family grew in number and age). There was a decent folk club at the Blackbirds, as I recall.
I grew up in Brewster Road (facing the Essex Cricket Ground) from about 1949 to 1968. We used to watch Essex play at the ground from my Mum and Dads bedroom window. Dad worked out how to read the run scores from the back of the scoreboard. The ground was also used once a year for massed uniform gatherings, Scouts, Guides etc with bands leading them into the ground. There were parades converging all around, it was a great sight. I believe a magnificent six in one cricket match hit the clock on the pavillion although I did not see it.
I use to amble down that Forest Road for a year when I was renting a flat at Preston Road while working in Whipps Cross. By far that is my favorite road too!
Your mention of Francis Rd reminds me of the time I was banged up there for the night for singing Flower of Scotland to some policemen on a train. The unwisdom of youth! Great film.
Francis Road police station, now flats. Bloody lovely looking building from the outside. I look at that building everytime I walk past it. Very pleasing on the eye.
Love the substations. Is it a silly ask to do a walk featuring those? The effort at beautiful architecture is really incredible! Something we just don't do here anymore. I am a silly north american - what do I know?
Nice video I was brought up in Selby road Leytonstone, it started at one end Leytonstone high road by the plough and Harrow pub , and went through to cann Hall Road , near the colgrave arms pub , my dad used have a drink , then later my brother. It’s now a type of religious learning centre , I went to the infants and junior school there , then I went George mitchel boys school farmers road Leyton , the cricket ground was our sports field, lived in Leyton , Walthamstow , and Chingford, I know all of the area very well, used walk all around the beautiful forest areas, the hollow ponds and eagle lake area right up to the Chingford plains and Connaught waters, also loved to cycle through Wanstead park and Wanstead flats , where there was a fair ground a couple of times a year , also fished on the pond there
great video brought back loads of memories i lived in fillebrook rd for 21 years and would still be today if we wasn't evicted because the houses were torn down for new m11 link rd . the over pass you were on at the very beginning was a stones throw from our house towards the station . thanks to you i think i will pay the area a visit
I was born near the Thatched House in Stratford at Hall Rd, then moved to Leytonstone near Cathall rd baths, then moved to Leyton, Alfred Hitchcock was born above Evans stores in Leytonstone High rd, Paul Hardcastle (nananana 19) and Johnathan Ross were born there and I worked at Goldrings in the High Rd with Graham Gooch.
So sad and the changes that have happened in the name of progress. I used to live in ilford. Small town and lovely old type of high street. Now a hell hole.apparently the worst place to live in England is ilford.its now a foreign town to me.
I miss the gallery and the gardens, a few of us actually hung on next door in Vertigo until 2016. With that very JCB in the film deliberately rocking the building with us inside, nice! I understand the gallery site still hasn't been developed? Seems odd after all the trouble the 'developers' went to.
Do you know what happened at 202:Francis Road Leyton in 1965?My best friend and her mother? Check it out please? And please please remember them. Vicki Simkin 18.4.1950 - 14 (aporix) 4. 1965 Gone but never forgotten x
Oh no! Can't believe the Three Blackbirds is gone. Happy memories of live music and quiz nights in the mid 90s. :'-(

The 491 lives on in my heart, many happy hours painting and drawing there.
So glad to find someone else appreciating the beauty of such un-sung buildings as electricity sub-stations.
+Kate Hardy I was going to do a whole project about them a while ago - even wrote to the Electricity company to get plans
A charming record of my home town, thank you.
I love the way you reveal real gems that are hidden in plain sight! Keep 'em coming.
thank you

Thanks for sharing that Ali, very sad that so many people lost their homes with the building of the road. Hope you enjoy revisiting the area
Watched Essex play Glamorgan there in a match that was tied. 1959
Fantastic - it's still a majestic ground
my home town areas! love it!
Homage to lost Electricity. I quite like the less crafted anterior vids John. Will read the book son, I do have it!

I use to stay in flempton rd Leyton. What a change 1975/6 to now!!
P.s. where is your trade mark hat?
I'm sad to hear about the "3 Blackbirds", I remember Hainault Road & there was a depot of some sort there, which is what the police building is now on

Apparently the first cricket match broadcast was made from Leyton Cricket Ground.
Know it well. Love these videos 🥰
Thanks Tara
Used to goto Abbotts park as a kids.
The Holly is in Forest Gate, not Leytonstone! Leytonstone starts at Cann Hall road.
My great, great, great, great grandfather George John Westfield ran a Leyton College out of Walnut Tree House between 1870 and 1890.
Thanks Michael - hadn't heard that before, great bit of local history, I always wonder about the house
What was the 491 gallery?
It was a squatted community space, they would run artists workshops, exhibitions, gigs etc - it was a wonderful thing
I grew up in Frith Road leytonstone thanks again for upload
