@@gunsmithcat7542 Tezuka himself had a tragic experience in war, and had a strong feeling that nuclear power should never be used in war again. That's why Atom is depicted as a symbol of peace, even though he is powered by a nuclear reactor. However, in later years, Tezuka began to say, "Atom was a failure". In reality, he may have been skeptical about the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

I think that Japanese doctor was Black Jack. Because it's based on Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. And when you think of a doctor in Osamu Tezuka's manga, what comes to mind is Black Jack. The character's name was "BJ" in the ending credits. And BJ's voice actor is Akio Otsuka. You may have noticed the unique voice of a Japanese doctor when he speaks.
Glad to see you boys reacting to this, this largely flew under the radar in the reaction community. This is the perfect Urasawa adaptation. They translated his artstyle and mood onto screen so beautifully.
I can't overstate how much artstyle carries this show. The type of story it tells and the overall tone is just perfect for it. It nearly tricks the brain that youre watching Monster. And this is one of the best depictions of human obot societies out there. It's not too human and not too artificial. And very nuanced. Just ideal.
It's a good thing to keep in mind that Astro Boy is called Atom in Japan, so introducing Atom here is definitely meant to elicit the idea that this is the same character. And like you mentioned, this was a manga made by Urasawa, but overseen by Tezuka's estate as it is a reinterpretation/adaptation of an arc within the Astro Boy canon. So yeah it will have some of the same characters, but it's kind of its own contained story at the same time. Honestly, I myself barely remember much of Astro Boy material, so it's not like it's necessary to appreciate the amazing work that is Pluto. I'm super excited for you guys to check this out! I laughed when you brought up Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep as soon as a dream happened because I thought the exact same. 😆 And the story of North No. 2 definitely made me cry as well. It was masterfully done. I also don't know if you'll ever play this game, but the new soulslike Lies of P has a really cool reference to this series in it! Hoping you check it out sometime if you're interested lol.
As someone who's first manga was the pluto “arc” of astro boy, it's really crazy how Urasawa turned a simplistic one shot with loads of potential into a murder mistery with political intrigue, with the main character being a robot that appeared for less than three pages, is astounding
When I was watching this it wasn't until I heard Dr Tenma's name that it occurred to me this is in the Astro boy universe which caught me so off guard because this was a surprisingly good watch and I can't wait to see your reaction
I'm really glad you're reacting to this series. I love this series a lot and I'm so excited to see more of it. Urusawa is one of my fave mangaka ever. Apparently from what I heard that the piano piece in this series is written by the mangaka himself too. Btw the Japanese doctor mentioned is a cameo of Black Jack from one of Tezuka's work of the same title.
Im not surprised Urasawa had a hand in the piano piece, considering how integral music is in 20CB. I mean he even performs a song for it there so its very cool how he fleshes that stuff out.
@@Alex-bH1 His rendition of Bob Lennon still is the best one out there. Not only does it epitomizes the character of Kenji but it also epitomizes the whole theme of the manga. All of that done in one beautiful song composed in his bedroom! What a goated, man!
It is impossible not to think of Asimov with this story and the situation these robots find themselves in. Robot Dreams immediately came to mind, and it's impossible not to apply the 3 laws of robotics here XD This anime is the epitome of my nerdiness! New anime by Naoki Urasawa based on Astroboy, an anime that came to my country in the 70s, and I got to watch it in the 80s pfff I'm old XD
I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Brau1589 and Arlecchino from Lies of P, from their themes and the way they talk, down to the pose they are both found in. In fact, looking at the manga panels, it seems like Brau was either a strong inspiration or a gigantic coincidence.
This is very philosophical and the story is moving. I recommend also another animation ,"Atom: The Beginning"by Tetsuro Kasahara! If you feel sad after watching "Pluto", check out this modern remake of Atom. this one makes you feel happy and exciting!😊 The theme of the work is: Do robots need hearts? Astro Boy made by Osamu Tezuka is a kind-hearted science boy.
I'm honestly bizarrely happy about how Jacob reacted to that moment in the snow 🤣because that's the moment that destroyed me. Don't know how to articulate WHY it hit me so hard but I genuinely had to pause for a few minutes to have a good cry.
I looked up some of the production history after watching the anime, and here are a few details I found about the manga: Pluto was published on the canonical date that Astro Boy/Atom was created in Tezuka's manga. The kernel for the idea started ahead of that anniversary when Urasawa was thinking of short one-volume or one-shot stories based on his favorite arc in Astro Boy, and when he re-read it realized how much he'd filled out the story in his head in however many decades had passed. He brought up the idea of re-telling an Astro Boy arc to a collaborator, who is credited as co-author, Takashi Nagasaki, and was adamant that someone else should do the project. Nagasaki told Urasawa that he was the one passionate about this, he is the one who should write/draw it. Eventually they went to Tezuka productions, were able after a while to meet with Osamu Tezuka's son, Macoto Tezka, and pitched the series. Tezka *turned them down*. Urasawa's team came back with a lot of rough sketches and outlines, and that is what persuaded Tezka to sign off on the project, under the terms that it NOT try to simply re-create the arc in Astro Boy. If Urasawa/Nagasaki were the ones writing/drawing the manga, it needs to be THEIR story in THEIR style; not his father's story with different art. This is ultimately what we got; a story full of various references to many of Osamu Tezuka's manga in the background (If you know the references you will spot them) but told in Urasawa's style with a wildly different tone than the original story. It's...I don't know if I think Pluto or Monster is the better manga, they're both fantastic. Other funny bit of trivia, when someone asked Urasawa pre-2020 for advice on adapting someone's story like he did for Pluto, he comment was "Don't." In essence, Urasawa considers this the most stressful project of his life because he was constantly paying homage to the original story, trying to add his own twists without diverging from the story, make sure he's not copying, etc...and Nagasaki's said the same thing. Pluto was the most difficult project they undertook and they're never doing something like it again.
That one japanese doctor supposed to be Blackjack, one of the most well known character from all of Tetzuka Osamu's works. I'm a big fan of the Blackjack manga series. Seriously reccommend even now.
I'm a big fan of Astro Boy (it was my first anime) so I've always wanted to read Pluto. Wow what a beautiful episode. Definately a bit of a different experience being familiar with The Greatest Robot on Earth. The North Two section reminded me of Violet Evergarden. Having not seen or read Monster yet, I find it funny that they brought up Dr. Tenma given that's also the name of an Astro Boy character.
Yeah its pretty funny whenever people attribute a name or trope to a show while watching the show that was the first to do it, Tenma was the name of the Protagonist in Monster and its 100% because Urasawa is a Tezuka fanboy

To be clear, Atom is Astro Boy. He was originally called Mighty Atom, "Astro Boy" was a name created just for the English dub.
To be precise, his japanese name is "Iron arms A TO MU", the "mighty" is also a westernized term.
It's strange that they would give a famous manga/anima character a name like that, only 6 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
