This is the paste formula used in the oral surgery department at Baylor Dental College when I was in my oral surgery fellowship program in 1979-80. I have never changed the formula or even researched it. I looked your question up on Google and found nothing associating eugenol contact to inferior alveolar nerve damage. If you find a reference to nerve damage from eugenol contact, please post it in the comments section of Dental Minute. The only change I have made is I pack the sockets at the time of surgery rather than after a dry socket has occurred. Probably for that reason I have never had a dry socket in 43 years of practice and extraction of many third molars. Take your practice to the Top Tier. Doesn't eugenol increase risk of paresthesia when directly in contact with the nerve? Likely the IAN is very close to the socket in this case.
