  • NOTE: Please enjoy these videos of projects I have worked on. I am not as responsive as I could be with my other business responsibilities. As I have had enough interest in these coops, I am planning on making a DIY manual soon and making it available. I will have to carve out the time and make it happen. Thank you for so much for the interest!
    An upgrade to the chicken tractors we have been building for years around our farm.
    We modified the back door, and removed the egg door.
    We added trailer jacks for the back wheels.
    Foil insulation in the ceiling of box to cut down on heat.
    Lots of ventilation built into the box on each side and at the top for air movement.
    Everything moves with the coop when we use the dolly.
    With a vinyl floor remnant on the coop floor, scraping out the good stuff for the garden is easy.
    This coop was not designed as an inexpensive chicken coop. It is very time consuming to build and the materials are rather expensive. But we do have functional ones from over 13 years ago, so they do last.
    We currently do not have updated plans or parts list for this. If we build another one soon, we will create a new DIY manual.

    That looks great. I'm all for being cost effective, but sometimes it's worth the extra money to have a better product. And that is flat out a better product. Thank you for sharing.

      So sorry that I haven't taken the time to respond to everyone. We are planning on taking a couple weeks off of our regular work in the next couple of months and put one together with pictures and directions. If all goes well, this summer a DIY manual should be available!

    Do you ever have any issues with predators digging under the tractor? I didn't see any hardware cloth on the underside of it. I want to build something similar and have heard mixed opinions about putting hardware cloth under the chickens feet as it may injur them and they can't scratch. Any thoughts on the matter?

    • @melsfunideas
      @melsfunideas  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Where we live we don’t have an issue. I move them everyday, which doesn’t give them time to dig much. We have possums, raccoons, and coyotes.

  • @thepragmaticfarmer6308
    @thepragmaticfarmer6308 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are onto something. Good design. But as others mentioned more ventilation is necessary and vinyl flooring will release harmful gases toxic to chickens. A weasel ccould easily get in that wire mesh as well, so I'd put a door on the opening or use tighter hardware cloth. Those to modifications and this is something I'd consider building.

    • @zeldahyrule543
      @zeldahyrule543 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      what do you mean vinyl flooring will harm chickens. we have had chickens for over 8 years vinyl flooring from the start. its easier to clean.

    • @melsfunideas

      @@zeldahyrule543 Agreed!

    • @russellmoore5711
      @russellmoore5711 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I knew when he said “vinyl flooring” it would have the liberals screaming “harmful blah, blah, blah.” A chicken will not be bothered by vinyl at all. We used to build coops with treated wood and liberals would say, “treated wood has harmful chemicals…..” It never bothered them at all. Aside from predators, chickens are resilient and can survive most anything. Carry on sir, good job on the wonderful design. Your vinyl flooring isn’t going to hurt any chicken. We’ve used it many times.

  • @BigAlSparks

    Only one drawback i can see. That arm hole for lock ins is big enough to allow a Opossum to get in. Maybe some sort of spring held flap there to cover it up.

  • @Cindy75K
    @Cindy75K 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't see a lot of ventilation, air flow is crucial to prevent ammonia buildup. Need a cut at the top walls above their heads with hardware cloth, maybe a wooden slide to adjust more/less air due to weather, that design wouldn't work in hot climates.

    • @melsfunideas
      @melsfunideas  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The raised house part was designed with plenty of ventilation at the top and bottom of the walls. If the chickens get too hot they can hang out in the shade under the house. Thanks for looking at our amazing coop!

    Is there a floor to it? If not, have you had issues with predators burrowing under?

    • @melsfunideas
      @melsfunideas  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a floor on the elevated house, but the grass area is open. We haven't had any issues with these coops out in our field with predators. It may be different in other areas.

    • @alexcoughlin7818
      @alexcoughlin7818 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, they won't answer you but I looked closer. It is a harbor freight side crank tongue jack they used two braces to mount and a joist hanger on top to keep from sliding up. The jack has a large bottom plate so they drilled out holes to attach to large cart wheels. I am going to do this to my 10 foot coop made out of 2x4s. Hope that helps. Cheers.
