  • As a Company Secretary, it takes me around 15-20 hours to prepare for a Board meeting. Some people are shocked at this amount of time, but it’s worth it when it helps the Board run more efficiently and effectively. What’s involved in preparing for a Board meeting: setting the agenda, working out the flow of the meeting, organising board papers, looking at previous action items, creating shell minutes in advance and lots more.

What's your opinion on how to go about engaging and utilizing the expertise of the Board collectively as a sounding board for certain strategic decisions facing the executive team?

Hi William, The Board is a resource available and should be used. It is important to be clear on roles so people know who ultimately is making a decision (and the Board does start stepping into operations). Probably the best tip is to not limit the utilisation of the Board to just Board meetings. You can engage outside of these where there is a benefit to the organisation.
