If your life is filled with material possessions and you do not have love you have nothing . These people that walk around speaking christianese without love sound like a A resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. “
Hilken is mistaken, here. Let's go back to the text - biblical context matters. Author and audience.
Who's the audience? John 13:34-35 Is directed at disciples. The new command is directed to his disciples, followers, Christians. In the text, that's what "one another" refers to.
1 John repeats the idea, and Matthew 25 (the least of these, my *brothers). The Bible introduces the Church as a new thing. In that context, Jesus (and the Epistles) teach us that a Christian has love for the church. Note the next verse:
"by this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another"
