I worked as an apprentice mechanic for a marine engineering company in Plymouth (UK) in my late teens and when the city hosted a round of offshore powerboat racing our section of dock was hired as a workspace by one of the teams so we got to have a good look inside. Somehow they'd managed to fit 4 of the big Lamborghini V12s in the back of this huge catamaran hulled thing all running on race gas with turbos so big you could have comfortably rented space inside for a family of 4. I think they said the engines could put out a comfortable 1500hp each and keep the boat running at over 200mph all day in calm conditions without even a flicker from the temperature gauge. I'll never forget the noise of the engines firing up, we must have been 200yrds away in a support boat when the engines came on one by one and even at that range the volume still hurt your ears, the saving grace was that when the pilots put the hammer down the boat disappeared so fast into the distance that by the time the engines had come on song they were far enough that you could appreciate the noise without all the blood coming out of your ears. We didn't get to meet the pilots but apparently they'd consider a bit of bleeding from the ears a fairly normal day at the office, dislodging lungs and other various internal organs isn't unusual in rough seas as it's just like driving down a dirt road at 200mph in a car with no suspension
@@aaronisgrate It was mostly red I think, catamaran hull and about 50ft long. I don't remember much more than that unfortunately, had a brief tour while it was on dry land after finishing work on the Saturday and then watching it get towed out of the estuary for testing on Monday
@@williamcostigan469 it was in the early 2000s. There isn't much you can do to improve safety on an offshore powerboat, hitting water at 150mph+ is exactly like hitting concrete so the best you can do is make sure that the pilots are contained in a cell that floats long enough for support crew to retrieve them. It's a similar approach to fireproof suits in racecars, you can't entirely prevent possibility of a car catching fire but the suit will mitigate damage for long enough for marshals to tackle the fire or extract the driver. The boats are extremely strong and every component gets the belt and braces treatment to ensure strength but that's more to ensure nothing falls off while smashing against the sea, if it goes badly wrong then several hundred thousands worth of engines are heading to the sea bed never to be seen again and bits of the hull will be washing ashore for weeks to come
Early 2000 offshore powerboat racing was dominated by Spirit of Norway. Class 1 offshore powerbat racing was limited to 2 engines and 920 or 850hp each. 4 engines and turboes sounds like something else, wonder what that could be?
I mean to have the first Lamborghini engine fully restored correctly is just amazing to me. So much time goes into research and sourcing parts etc. I don’t think most people understand and appreciate the amount of time it takes. Realy something special to look at and hear running again!! Then to have it in Jays garage, couldn’t have been better. Andrew is so knowledgeable and genuinely a car guy and of course Jay is the kind of guy you don’t want to stop talking. Robs engine also looked and sounded awesome. Thanks for your hard work Andrew and can’t wait to see it in the chassis.
Jay called it an "orchestra" I've always referred to it as a "12 cylinder symphony" . This was cool to see both of these engines side by side. Thank Jay, Andrew & Rob for sharing with us.
I'm really digging the episodes on the engines separated from their chassis. It absolutely gives us a unique view of these engines few people get. Thanks Jay 👍
One reason the car engine in this vid is quieter than the boat is because the exhaust of all 12 cylinders feed into one pipe. This makes for less time between exhaust pulses and more even exhaust flow.
John Meurer There was a now missing post speaking about exhaust sound. I am correct in that more cylinders in a single pipe are quieter, I've put enough modified exhaust systems together to know that. Less cylinders in a pipe = pulsed flow. More cylinders in a pipe = smoother flow, less change in over all pressure. Do some research on H and X pipes for dual exhaust systems. On the Motor Trend On Demand site, under Hot Rod, have a look at Engine Masters Season 2 Episode 22 , Straight exhaust Vs H pipe Vs X pipe. 9:03- 9:35 sound of X pipe / smoothing of pulses, 14:20 speaks of DB readings for all 3 and yes 1 DB is a lot of change. While this does not speak to all cylinders in a single pipe, it does speak to smoothing out pulses by mixing in more cylinders.
I have loved Lamborghini and their engines since I was a teenager way back now. The Countach still wows me up and their V-12 engines have a sound that just can't be replicated or equaled. They just got it right.

Only my two cents I believe the water injection into the exhaust was a spark arrestor as well as to cool the exhaust pipes We were in a olds 455 powered flat bottom boat and it had a valve on the exhaust to turn on and off the water supply to the exhaust Holy cows when the water was turned off the heat from the headers was unbelievably more It was a testament as to how much the water brought down the exhaust system temperature
I really like the Ferrari Colombo V12s but this 3.5 liter here sounds almost like a cross between a hot-rod V8 and that Colombo V12... great sounds! Old Italian V12 don't just make horsepower, they also make music in the process!
My Dad used to race smaller chassis, inland type boats in ODBA. Crazy to think most of the boats were around or less weight than that 8LV12. Power output generally speaking was ~500Hp but 2-stroke and revving to 11,800 RPM.
Something we don't see on engines these days...instead than the now-standard layout of exhaust pipes to the outside of the engine, carbs/intake manifolds in the V, and spark plugs between the cam shafts, the old 3500 engine has the intake manifolds bolting on between the cams, and the spark plugs in the V. There's a great shot of this at 1:58

Lamborghini had a Riva motorboat with twin Lamborghini V12s in the hull. It was restored a few years back and the article was in Octane. It was an interesting article and the boat is beautiful too.
When Jay switches off at 8:26, the water temperature gauge is still stuck under 40º C. So, even at 3500 rpm, I have to agree with those who thought that he was a little rev happy a little too soon. But I also agree that Jay knows what he's doing...
Remember watching the Florida offshore racing late at night in the uk as a kid… I would have loved to have been involved in it, those engines and the exotic location…
I have been watching this show now for some time. Jay got the historical and mechanical knowledge. The contend makes every guy (and women) drool. The interviews are exciting and intelligent. The test drives make me jelous. Keep going Jay you are having one of the best shows on the air. What I would love to see is more interactivity on social media (ea TH-cam) with Jay, the commentors and his fans. And Jay... why not proving them different and put one of them Marine engines in a car... making it the "Lenorghini"... Lol
Great episode. And I think someone did actually put one of those marine engines in an LM but I don’t know if it was an 8 liter. Can’t wait to see the rest of the 350GT
Part of me says an engine this beautiful deserves to be shown on it's own, then another part of me says it would be even more beautiful in a sleek streamlined body that says Superleggera.
I believe Bizzarinni used the Chevy V8 in his cars for financial reasons. Rivolta and Bizzarinni didn't have the financial luxury of developing their own engine, whereas Ferruccio Lamborghini was hell-bent on having his own engine in his cars (anti-Enzo reasons).
Rivolta was a rather different man than Lamborghini, in that he was not interested in building a better Ferrari, he was interested in the Production of Many cars that were maybe similar to a Ferrari, Thus Bizzarinni had a different job to do. Controlling the cost of producing the product was job#1. At the time, a state of the art sports car would have a V 12 in a Tubular space frame chassis. God knows what that would cost to build. So Bizzarinni designed a unibody car made of steel pressings with a Chevy V8.

i met Valantino BALBONI when I bought my first GALLARDO LP 550-2,(No 123/250),he signed my engine, the most humble guy,I met in the Super-Car Business,he told me,he"ll kill me,if I ever sold it....!!!!...He owns, not the No 1,but the VB 00.00 .
Really nice! They sound amazing! That's a ton of power!
I didn't realize they allowed pornography on TH-cam. Nice.
Eyes up front mister
Yeah, there are a bunch of pedos on yidtube. They're trying to normalize it by letting them get away with posting their garbage all over the place. They lure children by pretending to be other kids and then ask them to do disgusting things in live streams.
My carburetors are up here!
@@WTC7 Are you ok? I think you missed something.
FAPFAPFAPFAP
Oh how I wanted to hear them both together. Great to see these!
Lamborghini had a Riva motorboat with twin Lamborghini V12s in the hull.
It was restored a few years back and the article was in Octane.
It was an interesting article and the boat is beautiful too.
freaking works of art. exotic and beautiful at the same time.
""it represents the middle point..." - lovely point Mr Leno, thanks.
Works of art with awesome sound. Thanks Jay.
Jay is hilarious and doesn't bite his tongue. Cooling the exhaust is completely unnecessary😆 💯🙌🤟
I want a series like this on the LSX, LS, And LT series. 👌🏼
thats lexs hybdrr v12 like fady hybdr fare 22 mog vs 11 nlg dybled mpgbhybrd v12
Lol
This is absolutely amazing. What automotive art!
Man that boat engine has a very unique sound.. just incredible
Always great stuff Jay.
Imagine if they could go back in time and use that 8.0L V12 during the unlimited CanAm racing series of the 1960's!
Beautiful sounding engines!! I wish I could hear them in person!
So... when are they coming out with a blender model?
I enjoyed your steam engines, aircraft engines, but this one was a sweet video.
Thanks Jay!
Water injected marine exhaust is for cooling the fiberglass or rubber parts of the exhaust system.
Jay is a CAR GOD he can lean on anything
Those engines are just incredible! Love the sound and how they move the car! Awesome Lamborghini 350gt engine is awesome! Love the video!
These old carburated V12 do sound incredible!
I agree! Thanks for watching!
I love seeing engines running on a test stand
Thanks jay for taking the time for us
that 350 gt engine noise is so sweet
eotrc fari 308 gt best
I love Lamborghini. Thanks.
Great episode. And I think someone did actually put one of those marine engines in an LM but I don’t know if it was an 8 liter. Can’t wait to see the rest of the 350GT
they tried to fit that engine on the LM004 and the Countach
I loved this!
WOW LOVE IT!!!!! Good one Jay!!!!
Part of me says an engine this beautiful deserves to be shown on it's own, then another part of me says it would be even more beautiful in a sleek streamlined body that says Superleggera.
The headers on the marine engine are a work of art.
Lamborghini Jalpa next please !!!! One of the most beautiful V8 engines that was forgotten.
I've got an 92 5.0 302, roller rockers, hydraulic lifters, headers, upgraded manifold.
I love the sound of marine engines
You know that mechanic wasn’t about to let Jay touch that engine. He’s one of those dudes.
Absolutely love this channel
Fantastic content again Jay.... Thank you.
Jay combed his hair, gotta be a special day :)
Awesome video, really enjoyed it.
Lamborghini had the engine building facilities from its tractor business.
This is the best show!
Love this sort of stuff
I love when Clem from the Shell Station makes an appearance.
Brilliant!!
Great video thank you Jay!!!
That guy was about to throat punch Jay for cold revving his engine lol
aren't all engines cold until you rev it...
You’re supposed to wait a bit until you rev
@@joser7894 but he primed the motor
Absolute works of functional art.
Great video I absolutely love Lamborghini
Great discussion. Please have Andrew back when he has the 3.5 back into the car.
🇵🇱🇮🇹🇺🇸 *in other words : Romanowski x Lamborghini x Leno*
Thanks for the cool comment!
@@LamborghiniClubAmerica *My pleasure*
That 8 liter is a bloody Monster.
