Why a 2022 Recession Would Be Unlike Any Other | WSJ

  • Is the U.S. in a recession? Many economists think that’s a possibility and by some measurements, it may have already started. But why aren’t people losing their jobs?
Recessions usually come with a dip in economic output and a rise in unemployment. Right now, economic output is falling. But so is unemployment. WSJ’s Jon Hilsenrath has coined it a “jobful downturn.” We look at past recessions and indicators to explain how a recession in 2020 could be very different.
Read more about this “jobful downturn” on The Wall Street Journal: www.wsj.com/articles/recessio...

Bad year for me, META down 40k, ALLP down 35k, Draft Kings down 6k, NIO down 15K, ABML down 8k, and my wife doesn’t know. I foresee a recession lasting 2-3 years, and if inflation continues to surge, the Federal Reserve will likely raise interest rates soon. Inflation is causing various issues worldwide, such as food shortages, scarcities of diesel and heating fuel, and significant spikes in housing prices, leading to a potential financial market crash. This global downturn could have long-lasting repercussions. Given the current inflation rate of approximately 9%, my main worry is how to optimize my savings and retirement fund, which has remained stagnant at around $300,000, yielding almost no gains for quite some time.

We always tried to give Annual Raises reflecting the inflation Rates & Job performance and Bonuses were always based on Yearly Profits, when we saw Market Conditions eroding, we would cut back on them along with Upper Management Distributions & Stock Grants, and would request The BOD to cut the Dividend, only to build cash reserves adequate enough to see The Company though any impending deeper downturn without having to resort to Layoffs. The longer-term Employees knew what we were trying to do as they had been though it before and never complained. Trying to explain it to newer Hires was fruitless as they thought it was just greed and never realized it was being done to keep them employed regardless of Market Conditions. There were times when Managers had to find tasks that required no other cost than Man Hours to keep employees busy. But in the 27 Years (of which some were operated in the Red) of my Tenure we never had a Layoff despite all the ups and down of the Economy & Market Place. Good Business Leaders recognize their Employees value and the investment you make in training them. Retaining them is a big part of being a Leader. I saw it in the news that most countries are all competing for parts , products food etc. Even nations that managed their rates better are seeing major issues. The glut of money was an issue sure, but the surging demand from nation that re-opened from covid lockdowns played a larger role. It really isn't rocket science and the fact economist are having such a difficult time understanding this recession from others baffles my mind. The simple answer is things are too expensive while wages don't keep up. It's been happening for 40 years now, and the fact they ignore that more and more people are a) not able to afford a home or rent, b) can't afford the basics, c) are incapable of putting money back into the economy since 90% of the 70+% of Americans go into rent/utilities/food, and d) the things needed for people to start making more money have become so expensive that more people are strapped with debt and forced to put even more money needed to stop a recession from happening going to pay off student loans. People aren't buying because people can't afford it and what's worse is that the people who can afford to spend are the same people hoarding the majority of wealth, to where they're not spending it, they're using that money to make more money so they can hoard more money.

I know corporate America threw out long term stability in exchange for short term profits once Reagan changed the laws, but the level of arrogance that's being displayed in not even considering a reduction in profit margins to maintain longer term company health (ie keeping your talent in the company instead of laying them off) is insane and just shows that these companies are assuming the politicians they paid for will bail them out when their strategy goes south, again...

@@christopherl4249 I agree people should be chasing trades instead of wasting time in uni, as there are only so many high level jobs to go round..
But there a large portion of those jobs are not suitable for trades, also working self employed jobs usually relies on word of mouth, expierence, reputation, and self promotion those barriers make it difficult for new people to enter and stop certain people with certain issues obtaining those jobs in first place (mental health, recovering addicts, criminal records, injury, not to mention ethnicity, race, culture, certification for particular skills(ie an immigrant with unrecognised qualifications) , (wether an mod contract would be offered to a Muslim, with criminal records is questionable (yes I picked an obscure example, but there are lots of real world examples))
There are also people out there from dysfunctional backgrounds who never got the chance to study either way, their are also many other issues stopping people from working like being a non professional carer, disabilitys etc.. Lots of these people néed their meagre wages subsidised just to be able to pay rent or medical costs.
Its easy to condemn these people to begging or euthanasia, but when it's you or a loved one who can no longer provide for the pact are you that cold you wouldn't ask for mercy?

I disagree with this statement about how ‘high inflation expectations leads to cutting of consumer spending.
Friedman’s analogy of ‘anticipated inflation’ would contradict this point because he believes that if consumers are expecting high inflationary pressure in the future, they will spend now rather than later to ensure they purchase at a lower price. This then leads to greater demand-side inflationary pressure due to the ‘moving forward’ of purchases from the future to the present.
