My first car was a 1961 Rambler 4 Doorwith auto trans. I loved that little car. It was fun to drive, easy to handle. No power but it did have an AM radio. I only paid $100.00 for used. Rambler made great cars my 2 younger brothers purchased new AMC cars years later. They too, loved their cars. This car brings back found memories.

My Mom's 1st car was a new white '59 Rambler American 2-door. That year the only options available were overdrive for (3-speed manual), automatic, AM radio, extra side chrome, flying mermaid hood ornament & rear continental kit. The only option on Mom's was automatic. To answer your question, it's a 3-speed auto. L = low (or 1st gear). 1 = drive (or 1st thru 3rd gear). 2= "fuel economy city driving" (bypasses 1st gear, starts in 2nd & shifts to 3rd). Standard were "Nash" seats where both driver & front passenger seatbacks recline into a bed. In 1959 the base stripped down Rambler American had a sticker price of $900 which was the least expensive US car on the market. In '65 Mom handed the Rambler down to my Cousin Mary as her 1st car for babysitting me. In '68 Mary handed it down to my Aunt Leona & Uncle Ole so they wouldn't mess up their recently acquired '66 Plymouth Fury II when they went fishing. In 1974 my Aunt & Uncle passed it onto me as my 1st car. I drove it until it died in 1977.

My first car was a 1960 Rambler. I loved that car. It was a 4 de. with auto. Same body style. Great fun car to own & drive.

The transmission is a 3-speed Borg-Warner Flash-O-Matic. You (or the new owner) probably figured this out... On the transmission quadrant, '2' starts from rest in 2nd gear, '1' starts in 1st gear, 'L' locks it into 1st gear. In normal driving, it should be in '1'.

1:50 You will remember that the American was a reprise if the early fifties Nash Rambler, which has skirts stamped into the fenders., both front and rear. This was a Nash styling peculiarity, and it made it necessary to set the front wheels well inboard to allow the front wheels to steer.
When AMC discontinues Nash and Hudson models in favor of a reskinned version of the second-generation Rambler, available as the Six and the Rebel, and a stretch-wheelbase version called The Ambassador by Rambler, they realized that they needed something between the bigger Ramblers and the Metropolitan.
AMC lacked the funds to develop a new car at that time, so they dusted off the first-generation bidy dies, made some minor changes (including opening the fenders to expose the wheels), but apparently didn't push the front wheels out to the body sides.

The four door on this body style was 1960 only, we had a 1959 American Wagon when I was real young, it got traded off on a new 1962 VW Bug, we got a 1960 American 4 door about 6 years later and that car was given to me when I turned 16. I know the 1960 had 15" tires but they were only about 4" wide, the rear windows didn't roll all the way down because the rear wheel wells are in the way. This car was a re-make of an earlier platform (1954 and 1955 Nash Rambler) and was put back into production to give AMC a second car to sell against the Studebaker Lark, the Ford Falcon/Mercury Comet, Chevrolet Corvair and Plymouth Valiant with out a large capital outlay. It is a three speed transmission, if I remember the 2 position caused the car to start in 2nd gear instead of 1st for economy and in snow when you didn't wan to spin the tires.

My first car was a '59 Rambler American Super, red with a white top. I hate the after-market continental package because it ruins the small car lines, same with the wheels. The car's front, rear, side views and overall stance is very classic and this is ruined by these mods. The out of proportion part of the hood ornament has been added and the hood latch lever didn't have a knob on it, there was only a bent rod. The grill was brushed aluminum.
The wipers were powered by the engine's vacuum advance and were very finicky. If you had to really step on the gas in the rain, the wipers would stop until you let up. I don't believe the steering wheel is stock. Mine didn't have a horn ring, just a horn button. I wish you would have blown the horn. The stock horn had a very loud, single tone. Not the "beep-beep" made famous by the song by The Playmates.
The shifter is separate from the steering column. Similar to this auto shifter, my manual shift lever went to a ball joint on the dash and a shaft connected to linkage under the hood and then on to the transmission. My linkage bushings were shot and I frequently had to stop the car, turn off the engine and manipulate the linkage under the hood when it got stuck in 2nd.
The brake cylinder is located under the driver's side floor and accessed by removing a plate under the floor mat. The self-adjusting brakes were fabulous. They would adjust when you applied the brakes while backing up. I love how the exhaust manifold was a tube that strapped to the block. The trunk is so big because there is room for the spare tire. We won't talk about how the seats laid down.
The windshield washer reservoir was a vinyl pouch mounted on the fire wall on the driver's side. The washer was operated by pumping a foot lever near the headlight dimmer switch. The rubber bulb in my foot pump was broken and wouldn't work.
My flat head 6 had a minor cooling jacket leak in the head. A pool of antifreeze would accumulate around the #2 spark plug, but no fluid was going into the crankcase. Service was very easy to do. Plugs, points, and oil were very simple. I rebuilt the single barrel carb, but put the pin that held the float in backwards and it would slip off and flood. Took a week to figure that one out.
Great first car. I had it form 1973-75. My mom's cousin found it in a field, bought it for $40, gave it tires and a battery and sold it to me for $160 with the promise to sell it back to her when I got rid of it.

IMHO this was the best looking AMC/Rambler American Super ever & until the 1965 model came along which was nice !But just didn't have the styling of these late 50's Rambler Americans ! & the early 60's were to square looking , The only thing I would ad to this automobile is some Vintage A/C ! Thanks for the video . She is as beautiful as the hood ornament.

The Author of "Vintage Trailers" says:
"My first Recreational vehicle was also my first car, an eight year old 1960 Rambler American. The front seats folded back and joined the rear bench seat to form a bed, which filled the entire cabin. Eventually, the driver seat would not go back up, so I drove around seated on the edge of the bed..."
Not sure if this is true, or if this kats seats where just broken. But I have seen a 1950's American Rod that did have an option like that. Just not sure if it was the Rambler American or the DeSoto

My 59 also had the problem, with the driver's seat eventually sagging, and making the driver position uncomfortable!...I used a pillow for awhile, but eventually got rid of the car. Otherwise, it was a cool ride!

You know, if the people who produced Columbo hadn't used a Peugeot, this would have been a perfect substitute, without the Continental kit, of course.

  • @winstonelston5743
    @winstonelston5743 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Actually, the '58-'61 Rambler American was a revival of the Lois Lane generation ramblers from around '51. The Rambler Flash-O-Matic was a three-speed Borg Warner unit, essentially identical to the Studebaker Flight-O-Matic. The narrow front track carried over from the earlier Ramblers which had skirted wheels front and rear. The reclining seats were a considered to be a "Double Bed" and the seat belts were originally intended to keep the front seat passenger secure when napping with the seat reclined. Yikes!

Did you SAY in what state JudkhunChevy was located? If it's Florida/some other Southern States, that black car will be as HOT as a freshly-fired--pistol,--black paint making a car 10 degrees hotter in low desert, like Phoenix, Az, over a lighter-color. With NO WORKING A/C,--if you were a Senior, you could DIE...driving that car, unless your constant "best-friend" was an 'Icey-Sippy-cup', and you drove only from 8Pm--6:OOAm. Otherwise, looks like a fine unit/FUN-car. I didn't realize how much SPACE there was in the seating. Must get over 30mpg over-all. Do you have a "list" of mechanics that'll work on them, if one no longer can? That could be an added "feature" of your web-site. Do you FIND a specific make, model, paint, options for people, for Con$ideration?

i had to laugh about the self adjusting brakes. i will say most likely i am at least 25 plus years older than you. yes self adjusting breaks were a god send. unless you had your oil changed bya real service station the brakes where generally foregotton. what i noted was what made them work. they only worked in backing up using the breaks. i may be wrong but i am rather sure iam correct. there was a drawback to this as people often set out to self adjust and lock them so tight the car wouldn't move.

This is an AMERICAN MOTORS Rambler American! "AMC" was not used to refer to the company until 1970. Nowhere on this car will you see anything saying AMC, so please know what you are talking about. Also, why do you use the stupid metric displacement for the engine; that was never used in those years. Use cubic inches, as any American should.
