One of the reasons that Vince Gilligan believed Bryan Cranston could portray Walter White was because he believed that if you could in comedy, you could act in any genre. I believe that applies to Hader's portrayal here too.
I noticed every other character in the tv show had something to say before they died. Barry was the only one who had nothing to externalize, nothing to externalize at all before death.
And to think of the irony that Albert was somewhat responsible for Barry's 1st kill 10:20, ordering and cheering afterwards, yet years later 14:00 asks Barry to stop. I'm wondering why Hader & Berg didn't incorporate Albert's accountability in that scene.
@@supernintenjoe8911 wrong. Fuches rescued Barry from Afghanistan and turned him into a hitman, but not before Barry's 1st ever kill in Afghanistan, cheered by Albert. Watch again.
I don’t remember ever disliking Bill Hader in the movies I’ve seen him in, but he was almost always a supporting role and worked well in that capacity. I can’t say the same for folks like Ryan Reynolds or The Rock, who really are the same damn character in every thing they’re in to the point that it’s annoying.
I myself was in shock at Haders acting ability on my first viewing of Barry, but it was of the amazing variety. With his comedic career proceeding him, I would've never guessed he had these kind of acting chops.
Bill has said over and over in interviews that he doesn't overthink his acting in Barry because he's too focused on every other part of the show. He often only films his scenes 1-2 times before moving on. The fact that he can do such masterful work without much repetition or practice is fucking incredible. As great as he was on SNL, it's a shame that that set him up for a career of films where he didn't get much opportunity to be taken seriously. Imagine if we could have been appreciating the full range of his skill set in quality stories for YEARS instead of him getting cast in, like, the Amy Schumer garbage romance
Indeed. And on that note, Amy Schumer suxxxx .. 😂but I did enjoy Bill in things like IT chapter 2, superbad, the to-do list, skeleton twins .. & Brooklyn 99 even if only for one episode lol.. In addition to SNL.
and he was so so good on the Amy Schumer garbage romance still, like he outperformance everyone on every single piece he is in. he was also so good on his very small role in Hot Rod, an amazing movie
I actually loved him in train wreck. I watched it while in labour and was laughing the entire time. I agree it doesn't showcase his range and certainly isn't at his level of talent as a film tho lol
While Hader does a remarkable job throughout the series as the lead, I hope you’ll do a similar analysis on Sarah Goldberg’s work as Sally. The way her character slow burned into the numerous out-of-nowhere moments of dramatic catharsis in S2 and S3 had me utterly staggered. What a show.

Oh, wow
I’m so glad someone made a video about this. The scene that REALLY showed me he had a special talent was (SPOILERS)
The scene when we finally see Barry kill Janice, and after he does so we watch his panicked, twitchy gaze wash over with this eerie, calm blackness. It’s harrowing.
6:32 I swear he looks like dexter for a minute 😂 imagine a show with Michael c hall and Bill Hader both being lead rolls in it
Great analysis
He would be a really good Hughie Campbell in the boys
Love the boys! And youre right
Barry deserves all the award
13:40 another performance like this is Rami Malek in Mr Robot or Peter Capaldi as The Doctor
I hope u reviewed Mr in between as well. Great show. Similar themes.
Bill Hader's eyes fucking scare me sometimes...
I know this essay is about acting, but dude also directed (most of) it. and it's fucking incredible! one of the best series in a while ❤🔥
"eyes are the gateway to soul"
Since I've seen your videos about toxic masculinity, I've been waiting for you to talk about Barry. No idea why I haven't seen this video so far, but I'm very glad it exists.
That’s someone else
Exquisite commentary
I would love for you to do an analysis on Denzel Washington in Training Day! His subtle acting was so good!!!!
KING KONG --- AIN'T GOT SHIT --- ON ME!
Nice observation!
Something interesting to me is I have Dissociative Identity Disorder and I tend to get crazy eyes when I'm triggered or forced into a switch, the same way Barry does. My brother even calls them Bill Hader eyes when he notices
The dialogue of EVERY CHARACTER ACCEPT BARRY was always 10/10 on the nose it cant be a silent film because of what everyone else says
Barry is such great guy.
Barry is my favorite show
It's all about the eyes
vince gilligan said "if you want great drama, hire a comedy actor"
Incredible
He is fantastic!!!
You're super excllent at analysing Barry❤️
Good stuff
Hader is like a Jim Carrey for the 21st century, but with more restraint. He really is a remarkable talent. I love watching him in anything he does.
I don't see the comparison. Though admittedly am not a big Jim Carrey fan.. I feel bill hader is above and beyond anything Jim has done , just from Barry alone .
@@hotfudgecake I can see how my point could be missed. I was referring to the range and high degree of expression that each can convey with just their face. I didn't mean to suggest that Hader has a similar slapstick style.
Really great show
Barry is basically a movie in 4 volumes. Cinema has moved into streaming tv.
