  • The single spey cast is one of the most powerful spey casts and can be used with Skagit heads, Scandinavian shooting heads, and long spey lines.
There are a few essentials involved and I try to list about ten of them.. The lift must be smooth and clean, the sweep must go from low to higher utilizing an incline rod tip path or a climbing curve. The power of the sweep is provided by the bottom hand and or rotation of the body. The speed of the sweep is dependant on the length of the line to be cast.. For shorter lines the sweep must be slow with very minimal power and speed applied. For longer lines the sweep requires more power supplied by the bottom hand and the rotation of the body. The top hand is used primarily as a guide and pivot for the sweep and not used for power. The top hand should remain in front of the of the casters face and torso as allowing the top hand to go behind the head during the sweep by to much movement of the upper arm will cause the rod tip to droop downwards during the sweep and ruin the inclined path or climbing curve of the rod tip causing an ill-formed V loop which is not optimal for a good cast. The longer the line the more top hand involvement can be used in the forward stroke, but more top hand can be used in the forward stroke with short heads if caster desires. the longer the line the further out in front of the castor the anchor should be, The V loop does not load the rod, the forward cast loads the rod. Proper technique including a smooth casting stroke with gradual, fluid, smooth acceleration to a crisp stop creates line-speed, not brute force.

thank you, I have been fly fishing since I was young but spey casting for the last 10 or 11 years. I like to fish for Steelhead and Trout but also enjoy swinging for smallmouth bass. The Salmon fly hatch is coming up next. Siingle hand spey with large floating flies for hungry trout, great fun! Thanks for your comment, I'm happy you are watching! Thanks!

Jedi, i find there is a little dipsy doole before the D loop and that straitens the leader out. Forward trusting with the right hand is a bad habit to break and that could come from using a single hand rod for so long. If you are doing it right you will feel the power in the Butt end of the rod. just saying Tim,

I like that your casting off both shoulders.Same with the double spey. Very few anglers put in the work to achieve this. I've never seen anyone when I'm out on the water do this. When you you are able to cast off both shoulders with a single or double spey you can handle any difficulty you encounter.

Right or wrong, this is more or less applicable to Scandi casting and less so to Skagit casting and sink tips? Skagit casting with light tips and not heavy tips? On reminiscing on my casting this past year, I realized that some of my ill fated success was because I was trying to throw a heavy sink tip when sink tips were not a part of the particular casting style. So I have come to the conclusion that I need to pigeon-hole these types of casts with the proper line/tip/fly setup that is called for. My heart is set on a more Scandi style but the water I fish wants Skagit. And I don't have your knack of combining the two successfully. I would benefit tremendously if you would preface each lesson on which style is most applicable to the particular cast being demonstrated. I hope that is clear...

watersprite good points. It is more applicable to Scando lines for most people but it was Janusz Who convinced me to use touch and go with my heavy Skagit gear And though it may be a little more difficult it out performs standard Skagit casts for me personally. I therefore promote it as a cast for all types of gear though Skagit casting is more forgiving and I enjoy it also immensely!

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins My point being, a neophyte like myself should concentrate on learning the fundamentals of any given style before trying to ad lib, to cross over. Janusz and yourself could probably knit a sweater with the long rod but I wouldn't try teaching it to an early adoptee. In tennis you are taught early on to just hit it over the net, leaving the backspin for a later lesson. In bowling, you are taught to keep it out of the gutters long before you learn to bowl with a spinning hook. Just saying...

watersprite A new caster should not be using gear that is difficult to cast with using any style ie using heavy tips and dead chickens when learning Skagit style. A moderate tip and fly like a hobo Spey is just fine for learning to Skagit cast and with such a set up a single spey could or should be one of the first casts any caster learns. It’s very doable. Splash and go!

You do make a good point though, for touch and go casting it is easiest to learn with a floating tip as opposed to a sink tip, so I will concede to your line of thought on that, you are correct, I like the back and forth, thanks for the good comments!
