    Fun Facts:
When the time came to film the series finale to the second Ultra TV series, Ultraseven (October 1, 1967 to September 7, 1968). Ultraman creator Eiji Tsuburaya wanted it to be a grand affair. He conceived it a the farewell to what he saw as a trilogy that had begun with Ultra Q, continued with Ultraman, and would now conclude with Ultraseven. However, either he wanted to add another sequel series to his roster, or the TV networks asked for another one, a new Ultraman series
By April 28, 1969, a concept and three rough episode outlines for a forth Ultra series had been pitched to TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System). The initial story was titled “Special Monster Series: Ultraman 2.” Eventually, it was called Return of Ultraman, reportedly by Eiji Tsuburaya’s idea, as the series would feature the reappearance of the first Ultraman that was the focus of the original series form July 1966 to April 1967.
The new series would be set thirty tears after the original, which was itself meant to be taking place I the future. A two-part pilot was written by Mitsunari Taguchi and Tsutomu Kamata. The show’s premise was that Earth had been at peace since the original Ultraman departed years ago, but recently natural disasters such as underground volcanic eruptions, coupled with nuclear testing, have awakened ancient monsters. In the original opening scene, the Japanese Self Defense Forces are unable to defend Japan from the giant creatures. An elderly Captain Muramatsu would show up and advise the defense forces to aim for the monsters eyes, but the tactic fails. “I wish Ultraman was here,” hr laments. Right on cue Ultraman returns, beats the monster, and disappears. Shortly after, a special organization called the Monster Attack Team (MAT) is formed. In the next episode, Ultraman joins with with a name named Hideki Ban, a young member of MAT, when a retired Shin Hayata appears to hand off the Ultraman transformation-inducing Beta Capsule to Ban.
TBS, however, disliked the idea of bringing back the same Ultraman, and expressed a preference for a brand new Ultraman. The reason was that a new Ultraman would boost sales of toys, which had begun to sell well. In fact, the rising demand for kaiju toys was one impetus for Ultraman’s return. Added to that, reruns of the original Ultraman airing in the morning, were securing very significant TV viewer ratings averaging about 18% of households.
Though there is no explanation for why the new series, pitched in April 1969, didn’t begin airing until two years later. The decline and January, 1970m death of Eiji Tsuburaya likely impacted the development. His eldest son, Hajime Tsuburaya, pitched the series to TBS again in September of 1970, and a TBS executive asked Hajime that he give them some time to consider the proposal.
In the meantime, Hajime pitched a short series of stock footage from Ultraman and Ultraseven that would cost the company next to nothing to produce. It was entitled Ultra Fight, and each episode ran only five minutes. Th new series proved to be popular, so popular that the network wanted to extend it, even after Tsuburaya had used all of their stock footage. Therefore new monster battles were filmed, such as Eleking vs. Baltan, using costumes that had survived in usable shape from the TV series. Ultraseven also returned to battle monsters in some of the new segments. The success of the program inspired similar series of nothing but kaiju battles, including Tsuburaya’s Redman (1972-1973) and Toho’s Go! Godman (1972-1973) and Go! Greenman (1973-1974).
The success of Ultra Fight also ensured the production of Return of Ultraman which got the greenlight in December of 1970.

My favourite series. What I love the most is the whole show was actually about life stories and human nature. Even Ultraman himself is just an Alien with feelings and flaws and can be defeated at times. Everything in the show including the MAT fighter jet was designed to look more realistic and every story felt like something you would see or experience in real life.

Ep. 33 The Monster Tamer and the Boy
I really love the cinematography of that episode. The way they use environmental effects, in this case rain, to convey Ultraman’s rage and anger is just perfect. Moreover, the fight is captured in long-take, a technique which we don’t usually see nowadays with newer Ultras.
Bottom line, it’s one of the most memorable episode of any Ultra series.

Hope that you’ll continue doing more of these Ultra videos!

  • @venomouslizards

The Return of Ultraman is my favorite entry of the entire franchise. My only issue is that after episode 38, everything seems rather pointless. In the two part episode, Go lost his girlfriend and his mentor and had to fight harder than he ever had in order to defeat Alien Neckle and Black King. Thematically and action wise, this works way better as a conclusion than Alien Bat and Zetton II. I like that last 13 episodes if it seemed like these deaths had consequences, but besides Go adopting Jiro, nothing has changed. So whenever I rewatch the series, I always stop watching after episode 38.

    • @gavinlucas9761
      @gavinlucas9761 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Personally I really enjoyed the final 13 episodes.
      Such as 41, 42, 44, 45, 48, 49, 50, and 51 being among my favorite final episodes.
Sure I guess the 2 episodes of Alien Nackle and King Black kinda worked better as the final episodes. But the show didn’t really dropped for me after that 2 parter. And I still enjoy watching those episodes.

Leogon (monster from episode 34) shares several traits with the Toho Kaiju Biollante, as both of them were created by the same man: Shinichiro Kobayashi. Both Kaiju are plant-animal hybrids that appear in stories with a "science gone too far" theme. Interestingly, Leogon was designed by concept artist Kako Yodane, who also submitted initial concept designs for Biollante to Toho, which are compiled in the book Godzilla vs. Biollante Completion. In Yodane's own 2014 art book, he revealed that his final form Biollante concept art was inspired directly by Leogon.
Curiously, the location where Jack and Leogon fight is the same location where Godzilla and Biollante fight for the first time, in Lake Ashi.

Agreed, if ultraman is the series of mystery, ultraseven is a bit of a self instrospection, jack is a drama in the pov of its human host, then mebius is a story about the bond shared between an ultra and his monster attack team, its really fulfilling seeing each character having a really fleshed out personal arcs and even referencing a lot of the best moments of other ultra series.
Most notable ones being ace's reuniting hokuto with yuko, ultraman's confrontation with his old rival mefilas, metron's return, and much much more, i can't overstate how good this show is to ultraman fans, especially if you are a fan of the original ultra brother series

It stood out in Brazil brack to the 70 and 80´s . Reasons abound: Improvements on Special effects, Stand alone heroes fighting together first time ( Franchise is about to kick off ), Xpectacular Score, Dog-fightings beyond fantastic, one of the most fantastic and dramatic episodes ever when The first ultraman and seven team up to save Ultraman Jack and "learning how to use his powers for the right reason" not at ramdom just for the fun of it. Amazing Cameos like the Fantastic SAWAMURA kicking Goh´s butt in one of the episodes!! Akio Hishogi´s visual masterpiece art is something simply unbelievable !! In addition the series shows one of the most xpetacular episodes ever when Ultraman faces off Murugi . A masterpiece episode that has a very interesting Historical background history regarding the conflicts between Koreans and Japanese back in the 1920´s. Ultraman Jack can´t beat UltraSeven but no doubt about it ..It´s a MASTERPIECE !!!

I think the problem with that final third of episodes comes down to pacing. Compare Ultraman Dies at Sunset to The Monster Tamer & The Boy and the former just feels...rushed.
They don’t take the time to let the show ‘breathe’ like they did in the beginning, which causes you to not properly take in the majority of the big emotional beats, especially THAT scene.
Though I will say that this newly rushed sense of pacing would go on to work wonders for Ultraman Ace in creating its whole fever dream vibe.

@7:31 I always took that scene as being Go's imagination. Why would the captain be scolding him instead of somehow helping with the emergency? Earlier Goh commented to Ibuki that the boy likely sees the alien as a father-figure, adding that he sort of sees Ibuki like that as well. I took this as his conscience taking the form of his father-figure and superior to remind him to do the right thing.

Episode 25 was the craziest one to me.
Or how I like to call it: "How to psychologically deal with a potential bullied school shooter"
And the ending is pure meme material.
Fucking kid is still holing the MAT rocket launcher gun he stole and the two MAT colleagues are just staring blankly at him while he's fucking shooting endlessly into the air until one of them finally says stop...then stares at him again for what seems like forever and then says "had enough?" 🤣
An episode like this would never be made today lol

we all know that Ultraman and Ultraseven were two unrelated show, but did they intentionally make them to be potentially connected in the future? Like Ultra Seven was also from M78, and that same red color... etc. Ultra Seven is more like a"different variation of Ultraman with some differences" rather than" a different hero with some similaries of Ultraman"

It took Ultraman and Ultrasven who were supposed to be in separate universe and put them together, violating its own premise in the process, that this was the same Ultraman as in the origianl series. Instead its his brother. The rest of the "Ultra Brothers are Brothers in Arms not biological brothers, tiough Ace was adopted by Taro's parents and so Ace and Taro consider each other brothers, and Seven is Taro's uncle, Taro is Mebius' mentor. . And years later he will be known as Ultraman Jack (apparently a naming contest winner).
Ultraman and Ultraman Jack merged with humans to save them, Ultraseven did not, he just generated his own human form copying a man he briefly saw when he was flying by Earth.

7:11 in this moment he says mentally "stop being selfish" "you drew this monster" and this is a big of an critic to the fact of humantity be selfish in moments like that where the fault are their, but they don't caee and use everone to solve the promblem, when them that are the monsters.

Only a few times face disbanding? That was like every other episode!
And you imply they lost Katothrough death but he was transferred. I was pleasently surprised he got a send off episode rather than simply suddenly being gone and replaced. I liked Katofor being approachable but what I like about Ibuki is he was a bit more of a hard-ass. I kind of expect the captain to be more of a hard-ass but I like we got to see his family too.

There is something eldrich about both monsters. Something is wrong with how Bullton is a quivering heart-beating rock creature that warps reality. Priz-ma is presented a lot more eldrich and unnerving with the noise it makes. I'd like to see Priz-Ma come back. Oh god it'd be trippy if the two tried to fight each other and they create a mini-dimension or something and the Ultra and cast have to escape from it.

I only disagree on one point.
The kaiju and seijin designs are great IMO.
    Very memorable to me.
They might not feel as 'classic' as those that came before, but I think that simply might be because those were the earliest, therefore most iconic.
