    Jeff, it's called (iridescent), when the sun hits the male that brings out the color. I know it's a late post but i really like watching your martin videos.
    Pretty sure you can take your new rope and tape it to the old and run it up through the pulley, I've done that before, hope your martins are having a great year.

    Hello !
    I live in a rural area south of Birmingham, AL. I use stovepipe baffles around steel conduit poles to keep
    rat snakes from getting to my birds. I am using old TRIO Aluminum houses with doubled compartments
    and a few natural gourds painted with white Elastomeric roof coating. When I did not use the baffles, the snakes would run my colony off. I did not see baffles on your poles. Do you use snake protection ? If
    you use a small stock water tub, you can add bleach to the water, and submerge the plastic gourds in the bleach water. I hold them under the water by placing a concrete block on top of two at a time. I got my first pair on 2-24. I miss the 1897 Miss. flag !

      @jeffeubanks370  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put my snake guards on after the martins get here. Just haven’t got around to it yet. And when I ran natural gourds I used the same paint. Thanks for commenting.

    Trying to build natural gourds. I see the SREH on the gourds you have aren't built with porches.. I'm in Huntsville, I don't know how successful this will be, but I like the idea. Have an Eastern Barred Screech owl family that nests in the area.

    • @jeffeubanks370
      @jeffeubanks370  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve used porches in the past, but I think they managed the SREH just fine without them. I do believe that a porch allows a smaller framed starling the ability to “push” themselves in. When I was using natural gourds, I did put canopies over the entrance. I cut 4” pvc pipe in 2” sections, then cut those in half. They looked like the letter “C” after I cut them in half. Then I attached them above the entrance with silicone. This keeps rain from running down the gourd and into the nest area. Plus the Martins loved perching on the canopies. I’m still a month or so away from my returning. We had snow here Sunday. Thanks for watching our videos and your comments.

      @@jeffeubanks370 Thank you for your reply. What do you think about the Owls? Will that put off any visiting Martins?

    • @jeffeubanks370
      @jeffeubanks370  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CapnChkn1 I’ve never had any issues with the screech owls, only hoot owls. I understand that the screech owls might be able to squeeze in a 2” hole on a gourd, but there’s no way they could get through a SREH. So I don’t think you’ll have any issues with the screech owls.

    You did a great job to begin with. Thank you. I am working towards being a landlord. I grew about a hundred natural gourds I’m cleaning as we speak. Two questions I have. What is the width and height of the crescent whole. Second is can I put my gourds on a wire between two poles. I have plenty of space and a little watering hole where I want the gourds. In the goat pen seriously. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. FYI the fainting goat thing was hilarious. I’d love to have some. Thank you. Conway sc here thanks again

    • @jeffeubanks370
      @jeffeubanks370  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching our videos!! You can hang gourds from a wire. It does make cleaning them out a little difficult. As far as the measurements for the opening, I think if you go to PMCA website you should be able to find a template or at lest the measurements you need.
      It’s been a while since I cut any natural gourds.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for your comment!!

    Jeff, just found you channel and subscribed. That is an amazing pole design - do you see them? Or, do you consider special orders from folks? I live in Maryland - the previous owners had purple martins and I'd like to continue to support them. Most of the pole setups I've seen are not nearly this well constructed and designed. Thank you!

      Thanks for subscribing!! Sadly I don’t manufacture these to sell 😞. I work in a machine shop and just kinda put these together over a few years. Have you looked at Troyers Birds paradise?? I think they have something very similar to what I have, and they sell them!! I’m not sure if they have a website, but here’s the number off the catalog that I have 814-587-2756. Good luck! FYI They are kinda pricey 😳😳
      I’m patiently awaiting my first Martins to arrive here at the farm.

    Have you ever thought of adding porches?

    • @jeffeubanks370
      @jeffeubanks370  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have in the past. But I found the starlings where liked the porches as well. And with the porch , some starlings where able to “push” their way pass the entrance.
      The martins can slip right though. I do at a few beads I’d silicone caulking on the canopy of the entrance. Just so the martins have a little to hold onto, while perched over the entrance.
      Thanks the comment.

      Any type of bird droppings in large quantities is not good. It provides a platform for germs and other pest that can cause health issues for people.
