- What's Left of North Wildwood's Beaches 2024
There have been so many questions asking, "What do the North Wildwood Beaches look like" so we figured it would be best if we filmed the current situation in North Wildwood.
Just some context for this video. This was filmed about 4 hours before it was high tide, meaning that the water could be closer, which can be seen from the watermarks on the beach.
This upcoming spring, we are expected to have some kind of storms blow into the area, which could lead to a shifting of the beach. This shift could be good or bad, it just depends on where the current is going and where the sand gets dropped off.
At this time, there is no plan to do a beach replenishment in North Wildwood before the summer 2024 season. This decision is based on the fact that, at this time, there is no feasible way of doing such replenishment.
As you will see in this video, the water is hitting the back of Morey's Surfside Pier and underneath Sportland Pier.
It is this area where the beach replenishment has its problem.
In years past, the trucks were able to pass here to bring sand from Wildwood to North Wildwood without major problems. A few times a month the water would come up to the pier and crews would have to rebuild the pathway.
That is not possible with today's beaches since instead of them having to rebuild this pathway a few times a month, it would be every single day, leading to most of the time on the job being dedicated to just rebuilding this path only.
Other alternatives have been considered such as bringing the sand on the beach, but since smaller trucks would be needed, it would make a 2-month rebuilding plan into something that would be 4 months and not viable.
Check out our video below and let us know what you think of the current conditions of North Wildwood Beach.

Anxious to watch. I used to swim at the beach by the Hereford Inlet lighthouse as a youth in the ‘60s.
It is amazing the cycles that beach goes through!!! I always love your drone footage! Thanks!!!
My wife and I got married on the rocks at 2nd and JFK.. where the gazebo is…and had a mini reception to the right looking out to the ocean…2014… so much beach then…now it’s gone crazy! We stay around 9th and JFK every June …sad to see
Does anyone know when North Wildwood’s going to get a new boardwalk?
You showed how the beach was built up the last couple of years. Are there any plans to build it up again? I'm in FL, might drive up to see for myself.
Still cant believe Cape May is getting view blocking dunes built at Higbee Beach on the bay side.........but North Wildwood cant get get any protection from the Atlantic Ocean.....what the heck New Jersey!?!?
We will get those at 16 feet by 2028
@@WildwoodVideoArchivethose dunes are temporary as dunes built along the Gulf Coast of Florida back in October are already 50% depleted and won't survive until hurricane season. The beach will be lost and the houses and roads, too.
My family stays on 2nd ave and last summer it was nice having the beach right across from our condo. I guess not next year. I also recent saw that the condo on the corner of 2nd and JFK sold last year for a million or so. I guess the previous owner saw this coming and thought it would only get worse. Great views from the condo thought but awfully close to the incoming water.
I stay at 16th at the Matador and will still fly from Phoenix this summer regardless. Sad to see but Wildwood is the best!
Cool I'm in Phnx too n goin this Summer I've grown up in Wildwood every Summer for 31 yrs n can't wait till Summer
Great town!!!! I was so happy to make it a tradition for my family who didn't grow up there like I did! Even if you prefer Sam's over Mack's, can't argue it's the best beach town.
Mack's hands down!! I have also been going to Wildwood since I was little. And still Love it. I'm from Pa. And I'll drive 2&half hours to be in Wildwood even for a day.. I am so excited to hear that you bring your family all the way from Phoenix just to carry on your tradition. I was just in Phoenix a week ago. I go there to visit my daughter and her boyfriend often. But nothing compares to the Wildwood Ocean, Beach & Boardwalk!!!
Thanks for the update.
no problem!
From 10NBC Philadelphia FEB 4,2024
"New Jersey is refusing to allow a shore town whose sand dunes have washed away in places to build a bulkhead to protect itself, ruling that no one is in imminent danger.
The state Department of Environmental Protection told North Wildwood on Wednesday it will not give permission to the city to build a steel bulkhead on a section of beach where the dunes have been completely obliterated by storms.
That prompted Mayor Patrick Rosenello to say Thursday the city will move in appellate court for permission to build the barrier, which the state says will likely only worsen erosion from the force of waves bashing against it and scouring away any sand in front of it.
“Obviously we are very disappointed in the DEP's continued lack of concern regarding shore protection in North Wildwood,” he said. “The department has failed to do its job and now they are trying to thwart our efforts to protect ourselves. Frankly, it is unconscionable.”
Did they consider making a breakwater which runs parallel to the beach.
Awesome videos im from northen nj
Are the beaches going to be flooded
Remember that beach at 22nd St. used to be several hundred yards to the water in the 80s
Two guys deny you live in Wildwood. Phil Swetsky and Bob Adam's. Is that true?
Awesome Joey!!...I love living vicariously through your videos in Wildwood's off-season...Keep up the great work and thank you!!
Bloody hell! 2 years ago the inlet beach was huge. That jetty didn't even reach the inlet. And now there's no beach from 2nd to 7th. I hope everything can get sorted out
The bulkhead is needed
My grandparents owned a house on 8th street since the 50's. I spent all of my summers living in NW. You used to have to walk through two dunes to get to the long walk to the beach. So sad to see the beach gone. Thanks for the video Joey.
I remember walking at least a quarter mile to get to the water. This is unbelievable 😮. Great video ❤
When I was a kid the ocean would come right up the boards
Used to fish from the bulkhead at Moores inlet when I was a kid. Also fished from the jetty at 2nd and jfk. It's just a vicious cycle that it's going back to how it was in the 80s and 90s
Updates on WW always great, informative & appreciated. ⛱️
I'm glad you enjoyed this update. Hopefully we can get this under control
I live in Wildwood now but I agree back in the sixties the water would come under the boardwalk. My family use to put out their blanket there
If they drag the back bays and inlet the beach will come back. Had to stop putting out boat in had to leave on high tide and be back before low tide came in. Homes that one time boat docks in their yards now have sand filling the bay. I don’t know why they didn’t do it sooner . Dredge and things I think will get better 3:33
Thanks Joey. Appreciate all the updates. Don't think we will make Wildwood this July, hopefully next year.
I am so sorry to hear you can't make it!
Notice how the beaches stick out further into water where there is no sea walls? That's because sea walls cause more erosion and speed it up. You need more sand and rows of dunes, not more sea walls.
Hello Joey , will the beach look this way this summer? or it can change by then, I go around 9th
Speaking of North Wildwood, I’m surprised they didn’t put a sign on the Boardwalk showing where they border each other past the Gateway 26 arcade casino
NJDEP is very myopic with its “Trenton knows best” attitude. After two floods in Passaic county this winter several mayors asked the DEP to lower the water level at a critical lake ahead of the next storm in hopes of lessening the expected flood. The DEP refused and the third flood followed.
Check out the Beaches in the Crest they are Hugh. Mother Nature seems to have a mind of her own
I didn't see the bulk head at the life guard station? How old is this video? It's says 2d?
Thanks for the update!
That’s right my father and my aunt said when they were teenagers the water went right underneath the boardwalk at 24th St.!!!! You don’t hear anybody talk about that! PLEASE SHOW THAT SAME LOCATION AT LOW TIDE! When I was a child 30 years ago, there was no beach there ! They should do what they did in Ocean City Maryland!
Why did the ocean move longer up the beach
I was wondering if this summer you can do two separate videos on how the boardwalks have been upgrading year after year and showing new photos from this year can you do one video on the North Wildwood, Boardwalk, and one video on the Wildwood Boardwalk please
This is astounding.
Just think, we always get a sizeable nor'easter in March
Remember that beach at 22nd St. used to be several hundred yards to the water in the 80s
If that’s low tide I’m scared to see high tide let alone another storm😬
Dang , that is so weird .
I lived in N.J. for about 25 years through the late 60's to the early 80 's
I've seen the big switch around of the sea there a couple of times.
Used to walk that beach from Juniper Ave (where I rented a place two weeks every summer) all the way up to the Moores Inlet bar. (I think that's what it was called) across from the Red Garter.
Amazing how nature changes things !
I even remember waves breaking under the Hunts Pier when i was young, then seeing the ocean "way out there" and not even touching the pier !
Your videos bring back many memories !
Thanks !
Geology happens!
@@stevencosky4035 Yup ! Unfortunately !
I stayed in Wildwood every year of my life in the 70's and 80s, then sporadically after that. Back in the early 90's we stayed at place on 2nd Ave between Ocean and Surf. I remember what seemed like at least a quarter mile from the road before you even touched water.
I'm really in shock the way the beach (or lack thereof) is now. I mean there is NO beach at high tide from 2nd to 7th Ave, and after that, it's barely a beach at all.
Erosion and rising ocean levels are a scary thing. Give it another 20-30 years and the water will be up to Ocean Ave. The block between Ocean Ave and JFK Beach Dr will be gone.
If you check out one of our videos we uploaded last week, you would see footage of this part of the beach airplane in the 1960s. It’s so strange to compare
@@WildwoodVideoArchive Are you referring to the WW2 video you uploaded? Super video by the way. Around what time mark does it show the beach?
I was looking for Wildwood beach pictures from the 90's on the internet, but couldn't find any doing a quick search.
Excellent video with a great score?
Joey, is that u shreddin on the guitar???🎸🎶
WW has a major problem
Thanks!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate you doing this.
Fabulous photography!
Stop by the PT Lounge this summer! 😁
Do you have comparison photos for Hereford inlet? It seems like Stone Harbor has grown southward a bunch!
Amazing how in 30yrs the beach is all gone from 2nd to 22nd st. Blame it all on global warming definitely!!! 😊😊😊😊
I cannot believe this the beaches were huge it took forever just to walk down to the ocean actually driving down right now I love driving in the middle of the night. I wish I had somebody to walk around with when I got down there but I’m just dying to see what’s going on with the beach I can’t believe the ocean is right there, is it deep or is it still shallow? Can you still go in the ocean?
Where do you think will the northernmost public beach access be for the summer of 2024, where you can lay out all day?
History repeats itself, the planet will be mostly water again at some point.
👍🏼🙂
thank you for the video! We used to vacation in Wildwood....50's. I loved the ocean!
Do you live in wildwood
Lived in Haddon Heights. My grandmother had a house in Grassy Sound. It was a blast having access to Turtle Creek and the inter coastal waterway. Our families also would boat to the spit of beach just south of Stone Harbor, anchor and spend the day on the beach.
wow! in the sound! Did you have one of those where the water would go under the house?
@@stevencosky4035Oh man I loved Grassy sound when I was a youngster !
My father's friend had one of those stilt houses there !
Just the smell of the area was intoxicating !
As a teen after H.S. I used to rent a boat at Dads Dock and.catch plenty flounder back in those small little creeks !
Yes ….. the house was built in the tidal marsh. We had a ~ 200’ boardwalk which went from my Aunt and Uncle’s home (connected by a walkway to my grandmothers) to Turtle Creek (with docks and fishing pier). From what I can tell, all those homes have been abandoned or removed over the years and the by-pass to the old N. Wildwood Blvd. built to carry more traffic and replace the Grassy Sound drawbridge.
Do you happen to have any photos from that time. I would love to see that.
That's unbelievable. But it's pissing up a rain pipe. 30 year's of visiting and it gets trashed every other year. Those Hotels and Condos will be lucky to have 5 year's before they get reclaimed.
Looks like it's gone.
Most of it is
This is amazing.... This is my beach... the beach we swam at... lived just a few houses down from the Hereford lighthouse on Chestnut growing up (late 80's). I remember the beaches and dunes being extensive all along the coast of North Wildwood. The beaches around 16th street were 1/4 mile wide between the water and boardwalk. I guess it's just sand and therefore it's not permanent... , but WOW!
The beach in front of the lighthouse actually got a little bit bigger.
@@WildwoodVideoArchive I saw that in your video... when I was in grade school there was no beach in front of the lighthouse at all and the waves crashed directly on those rocks. After a storm it was really something to stand on top of those rocks when the waves were raging. Also, it looked at though Champagne Island doesn't really exist in the inlet anymore, but now a beach has formed and extended into Hereford Inlet on both the NWW side and the Stone Harbor side... really fascinating. Thanks for sharing the aerial video.
Thanks!
Ill come every year regardless but ill just come earlier this year so the beach wont be over crowded with less room now
