    With the 2.4 Ecotec I've put 320hp through the stock bolts (6 bolt) and with ARP bolts I've put 400+ hp through it many times and taken it apart, a lot, never noticed an issue. The LNF 2.0 turbocharged engine uses the same bolts, except there are 8 bolts instead of 6 bolts.

    • @cmattdabrat

      Looks like the first time around, the manual I had had the wrong torque specs. So they were over tightened.

  • @ardennielsen3761

    can smelt those old ARP bolts mixed with SAE9000 into a calendrical bar, inside of a argon purged electro magnetic sphere... but machining it also requires heating in very hot within within a similar vacuum purged argon filled chamber. Remote CNC, that's why its $300 a bolt. "the initial manufacturing set up cost has not been found as profitable to public use" there are not any drill bits that can cut into that metal. primary use in large locomotive/agricultural engines, the crankshaft is ARP4000

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear that. I'm not knocking their reasoning behind the price per bolt. As a small business owner, we don't screw with small custom orders (t-shirts) that require a lot of setup time. Just wanted to put it out there that I reached out, and here's what the price is. Nothing available in the Cruze / Sonic 1.8 / 1.4 size. So if you're looking to upgrade, you'll have to come up with a solution.

    I am buying a 2012 chevy Cruze in the next week that needs a head gasket, I found a kit that he head studs and the gaskets, is there any bolts I need to order that are one time use

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're just changing out the head gasket, the bolts are the only tty I can think of.
      However, some other notable mentions that are tty is the balancer, piston rods, main cap bolts, belt idler, timing belt idler, camshaft gears. They do say to replace the front engine support bolts that bolt to the head and block, but I've yet to find any. The rest for the most part are reusable. So parts do need the threads cleaned and blue loctite.

  • @a2cryss
    @a2cryss 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still cannot believe bolts that can handle a clutch drop cannot handle whatever torque it was making at over 7000RPM. Were you data logging and if so, how much boost when it let go?
    Edit: Also what was the belt issue?

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm surprised too because it's the same bolts in the 1.4 and don't think the guys at ZZP have twisted theirs out?
      I was data logging. I actually was doing a 2nd gear pull, and logging only that pull to dial in the top end some more. It was making 13 psi and some change, but I also ran it out to 8.2k rpm and when it bounced off rev limiter, that's where I heard it let go.
      Oh, on the belt. Just the dumbest oversight....ever. When I got a belt from Autozone, they gave me the correct belt, but the diagram they kept pulling up, was not the correct routing. It was ass backwards. So I thought the belt was too short, and kept try different length belts. Longs story short, had to look up a video on TH-cam and light bulb moment... now it's setup correct. 🤦🏽‍♂️

  • @szki272
    @szki272 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The more I think about this the worse it gets. So bolts in this instance provide 2 forces clamping and shear. The larger bolts may produce larger clamping force although if they are at the same torque specks then they may even produce less. The larger diameter should provide more shear force. However, since they are drilled by hand the shear could be on one or 2 bolts at a time instead of all 6 at once. Precision-drilled pins between the bolt holes would provide more shear force without enlarging the bolts. Video on how larger bolts doesn't mean the same clamping force. data starts in at about 4 minutes. th-cam.com/video/rGv_UXhNORE/w-d-xo.html

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing and you have a valid point. I'm not loosing sleep over it, nor should you. This is all just a fun project, and seeing what works, and what doesn't.
      Having said that, what boggles my mind is the fact the stock bolts sheered. Many have ran the same bolts (they are also in the 1.6 A16LET, as well as the 1.4 LUV) without issues. When I installed the flywheel, I torqued them to 45, 120º, and 45º. Don't quote me on those degrees, and I'm wiring this up off the top of my head and refer to the 1.8 manual for everything.
      So my question is, is it because of the flywheel being aluminum (softer metal)?
      Based on that video, the smaller the bolt, the more clamping force due to less friction. Which makes sense. Sheer force I'd like to see. I understand where you're coming from with the precision drilling or lack there of. However, this video could still be useful for anyone that has, let's say one bolt that needs to be oversized due to a stripped thread. It's fairly common for something like that to happen and common practice to enlarge it to the next size, helicoil it, etc.
      TBH, not sure how many people will read this, but I put about 50 hard miles on the car, many pulls, and same issue came up. So I will be pulling the trans, and crankshaft. Installing a stock crankshaft without modifications. I have a billet steel single mass flywheel on the way to put this issue to bed so we can get to breaking the next weak link.
      If modding this platform was easy, everyone would be doing it. By documenting this experience it'll save a lot of people the setbacks, time and money.
      I appreciate you looking out, and sharing your thoughts. It'll definitely help this project succeed, which I know we all want to see.

      @@cmattdabrat Just figured it was worth mentioning for the possibility of others considering this and since it sounds like you plan on building another motor.
