  • When it comes to mixing background vocals, you have many creative options, particularly in genres that are not entirely organic. You'll see an excellent example of that in this excerpt from "Start To Finish - Ill Factor Episode 13: Mixing With Jimmy Douglass Part 3," where Jimmy processes the pre-chorus background vocals from the Jared Evan song, "Light Shine Through," with compression, de-essing, reverb and flagging.

It’s refreshing, and validating, to see someone else talk about not using mix templates. Every time I think about a mix template I get anxiety because I never know what I’m going to do. Every mix is different. The idea of a mix template feels constraining and lazy. The only way I can see myself creating a template is if I’m working on a project where every song is basically the same, and I hope that never happens.

I agree. Templates have their place, but it is also important to keep your mixes fresh and different.

Templates are nice if you're in rock music, or do top down mixing I guess.

I don't do templates either, I just stick to conventions. First channels are always percussion and drums, bass comes next, lead vocal and instrument buses, and then I usually keep instrument grouped together (guitars, keys, etc.). I keep my colour coding the same. There are go to settings and combinations I try first as a starting point, but nothing is ever the same apart from a few outboard pieces which I use fixed settings on to keep them consistent. Gainstaging and editing whatever gets delivered takes way more time than the "template" aspect. Works great for me…

@@santibanks Nice. The only way I use my template sessions is by importing all the mixbuses / instrument buses so that I don't have to do the routing anymore.

I got to dm with Mr. Douglas telling him about the magnificent work he did on my favorite Lp of the unparalleled band Slave in particular on the 1981 album “Show Time”Jimmy told me that it was/is his work favorite as a sound engineer and a mixer on the Slave’s “ Show Time” LP. This technique of adding fx flanger on the BGVocal was also applied on the Slave album as well, unless my ears 👂 are failing me. I highly recommend to all the Funketiers and non to listen to Slave’s album “Show Time” and listen the magic work of J. Douglas and the undeniable fact that Slave had produced the most avant-garde Funk masterpieces, that the band has never missed adding amazing strings arrangement to their productions…And bang!!!

No such album exists. At least not by my search. I could be misunderstanding your english. Are you saying there’s a band named Slave who has an album named Show Time?

It's just as quick to select the one plugin or few that you like to create a sound than it is to have it in a template. I I never use templates with plugin chains, beefy drums or whatever, invariably it never quite feels the same, or even works on the following song. So for me, it's quicker to pull up an eq or compressor and dial it in from scratch, plus it feels more organic that way, one size does not fit all, it is a custom job.
