Dutch urban and suburban environments are generally designed with cyclists and pedestrians in mind (and are way less car centric than most of the developed world) hence our average supermarket is a lot smaller and closer to (or within) residential neighborhoods than those you see in many other places. As a result people often go shopping daily, at least for food items, instead of weekly. Given the limited transport capabilities of a bike, it is harder to incentivize people to buy stuff or quantities they don’t really need and this is in the end why the average dutch supermarket is smaller.

You do know you can just drink the water from the tap at home? In The Netherlands is't the same from the tap as you can buy in bottles.
