High-Tech Architecture - Pretty Nice Or Pretty Ugly?

  • Important note: Unfortunately the music mix in the beginning of this clip is a bit too loud, but be patient - from 0:18 seconds on it is all right! ###😘
It looks like a huge machine. The International Congress Centrum Berlin - ICC for short - is one of the most striking buildings in Berlin. And one of the most controversial. Some would gladly have it torn down, and the giant building has not been used properly since 2014. In addition, it has high maintenance costs and is also contaminated with asbestos. But others see the ICC as an important landmark in the city’s history. The city of Berlin, which owns the ICC, confirms this, having made it a listed building in 2019. It is hoped that temporary art exhibitions will open up new possibilities in the building’s future, however it still remains uncertain.

I adore it, I love how it reflects the sky. And how it feels to be inside it, with its curves and warm hues.
Covering it, as one project presented as a biosphere, would be such a loss. I hope it becomes a communal space where finance and art can live together, after all floors are independent and it's big enough to host all interests.

Soundtrack's great as always but unfortunately it's too loud. It's almost impossible to understand what the narrator is saying.

I hope that whatever they do, they preserve the interior. Exterior is nice, but interior is one of a kind and a masterpiece of 1970s design, and it should remain as it was thought.

Part of this building was used as a photo bash in Mass Effect 1 concept art. It's a gem of architecture tbh.

The ICC is an artsy behemoth having many possibilities. Cool if they can obtain resources to redesign/utilize it. The James R. Thompson Center in Chicago is a similar behemoth.

who classified this as High-Tech architecture? Pompidou Center as one of the people interviewed mentioned is really a High-Tech building. High-Tech architecture is a branch of modernism and it emphasizes on putting the structure and services exposed as a proof of collaboration between all engineering branches and the architects from conceptualization. High-Tech buildings are simply machines. While this one is more likely to be a postmodern building that uses futuristic elements...

The ICC didn’t use asbestos, instead kafko was used, as it was less expensive and readily available.

I say demo it and build a modern convention center that lets in lots of natural sunlight, has solar, efficient heating/cooling systems, clean modern touchless bathrooms, etc. and will host a bunch of cool conventions (cars/tuner/imports, comics/anime/cosplay/film, tattoos/oddities/goth, antiques/collectables, electronics/audiophile/computing, etc.) and is connected to mass transportation systems. This will bring tourists like myself to Germany and economic prosperity to the region.
