It amazes me that all these companies miss the mark on stoves. One doesn't have a feed port, one doesn't have airflow holes, one has poorly designed supports. While not difficult, you really shouldn't have to modify a new purchase because of poor design. Nice job as always Luke.
I bought one thanks to you Luke and I like it. I don’t have wood kindling easily accessible so I used carbon coals the first time and it did pretty good no warping or problems like that. Also one time I placed an alcohol stove in the middle and when it was blooming the fire was spinning, because of the holes at the bottom feeding oxygen to the fire and no wind blowing it, it was sending all the heat right in the middle of my pot boiling the water extremely fast.
This channel has really grown on me for some reason... I don't camp. I want to, but have no idea how to get started, It would be cool if you can do a beginner intro to camping. I know there areother channels, but I trust you more then others.Really honest reviews like is one reason why.
It would be cool if you obtained the other brand's stove to see if it is literally exactly the same. If so, you could drill holes in it to see how the performance increases.
My older Sister was in the Girl Scouts, back in the 1960’s. She also learned this, but they called it a Hobo Stove. I’ve used this idea with different sizes of cans over the years. But they don’t last all that long if you build a wood fire within them. If you stick with the Tuna Fish cans, with rolled newspaper within, saturated with paraffin wax, for your fire, I’ve had the stoves last 2-3yrs!. I’ve had 2 can stoves that lasted over 4 years. (How well you take care of them).
I am using the Stanley cook kit and I have no issues of smoke (cause it's narrower), it should be taken in consideration, as not everyone cooks with wide cook kits
Totally agree, if the pot stand is a bit higher, flame will concentrate in the middle and not shooting out at the side which make it quite bad for pots or cups with handle at the side or with silicone or plastic handle.
I agree with the hole situation. I drilled a few in mine around the groove at the top and some in the middle and that solved the issue. It’s now a rock star. I just got back from a weekend camp at Camp Durant, with the scouts. It helped keep coffee on tap all day yesterday. I like how fast you can get a fire going.
(5:23), That smoke could help the flavor of the food if you are cooking with a skillet... I'm liking these stove shows, even if the stove fails it's interesting.
Had one! Damaged in the pack when "bouncetest"was done from bearhang. Other than that, it was a good addition to my pack. I used a 5liter drybag to carry it.
We used to make these stoves very similar when I was a kid out of an old large size peach tin with a cake cooling rack on top. The only problem with those wore the tin does get hot but we had dozens of them when we needed them They were great similar concept.
Hear me out, you can use tent nails to make the legs, you can find a lid to place underneath and use hangers to make a grill on top and you got yourself a stove
Great video and review, thank you. Over the years, i have found wood burning stove are more trouble than what they are worth. They usually take up a lot of space, very limited heat control and unless you are going to tend the operation, they really muck up your cookware, which in turn mucks up everything else the cookware contacts. Admittedly it probably is just me, but i view a wood fire for cooking (esp when Backpacking ) as an emergency measure. And if that be the case, I'm circling the rocks and building a fire that i can keep hot indefinitely.
I would opt to keep the bag. It looks durable and canvas can be used for a lot of things. That's a really nice stove I may have to look into one considering I don't own one yet. Awesome review!!!
Yea I can't comment because I've never had one of these style of stoves. I like them and I know they have a place in camping when I would go out ..I always had fires on the ground. Fire bands never stopped me I know it wasn't law abiding thoughts... I never claimed to be perfect either, but I never burned down the woods
Why are storage bags notoriously small, first impression. Good design, with multiple uses. Light, titanium, tough, right sized. Third watch, so pleased with these twig burners. Try out thick twigs, wrapped to be like a Swiss log fire, set into the stove. It works so well. These twig stoves help solve another problem, campfires that are too big. With the twig stove we can confine our campfire to a better size, smaller, still exceptionally effective. I found a copy, titanium, of this stove on Amazon for $14.
Thanks for the review. I would love to see a review on Todd Albi’s Silverfire Scout gasifier backpacking stove. Or the Kelly Kettle maybe both please. Thanks again
Thanks Luke for the review. Yeah a few extra holes (quite a few) drilled on the side at the bottom and top, should solve both the problems. Get a titanium pot for it to nest in and throw away the canvas bag.
It looks like a good little stove. Even tho its hefty in price and size, I still prefer the Kelly Kettle. Simply because I love the top feeding port. The side feeding stoves are a bit of a pain.
For the money, I haven't found anything that competes with my Firebox Freestyle. I have the Ti version, and yes it's pricy, but I haven't found another that even comes close. It is light, packs small, burns very efficiently, and will work with a trangia style alcohol stove.
Thanks for this review! A portable lightweight multi fuel( or; more importantly; cooker/stove for when I have NO fuel) type stove has been collecting dust on my gear list because I’ve yet to find one that checks all the boxes for me. This one was on my short list, so I appreciate the detailed look at it.
Small and round, I'd like flat and triangular-3 sides, but I'm new to the channel and have no idea about any of it, just seems 3 flat pieces would store better and you'd have one larger flat area facing you or reflecting hear and it would even be more stable..maybe use it as a cutting board or plate..shovel etc, BUT with a round stove I'm sure you could easily just stuff a thermos or something inside so it wouldn't really take up more room..
Imo the folding options out there are better and at some point, someone needs to build an expanding model where adding panels can change from 1-3 people for example.
Yeah modding your equipment for your personal is a reasonable thing to do, but it can go wrong, it's not advisable to loan out or resell modded stuff. It could also be said if you're gonna bring out the powertools, why not make your own?
@@BarringtonOutdoors I hope your new tent does really well. The Mongar came out right after I got my tent. I’ve since seen 2 versions of the Star river. Maybe ne is mostly mesh, t and the other tent is more suitable for winter with lower solid panels.
Hey Luke. Nice review on it. I have the fire box 5, in SS. The only thing IMO would be better is the titanium version. Which were not available at the time of purchase. It's great to see the alternatives you put out there for different stoves of all nature's, as well as interesting ways of using them. Cheers Luke, enjoy the spring storms.
Love your channel and love camping gear. Love your reviews. But you can just make a stove like this out of a coffee can or such. For free. With any mods you want. Just sayin. Lol. And it will still be very light. But I know some people don't want to. So there's always a market for stuff 😁
I love this stove. I can nest my 750mL pot, GSI Infinity mug, and my utensils + lighter + fire starters + a few other things inside. When you fill it up, the fact that it doesn’t fold doesn’t matter. In fact, I like that the soot doesn’t get all over my hands like when I’m folding a firebox. Lastly, I like to carry this along with my alcohol stove. It works like a windscreen and keeps my pot steady, which is excellent for mornings when I don’t want to gather sticks
By chance, have you ever used the Boundless Voyage Outdoor Titanium Folding Wood Stove? I know it's made in China, but it seems like a relatively simple apparatus so where it is made may not matter. It is cheaper than a Firebox G2 so it appears to be a good alternative. Please let me know if you have ever tried this. Thanks!
Interesting. Lightweight for the capacity. A bit bulky. Nice price for the amount of titanium. I use the Firebox Titanium Nano and love the versatility and size.
Luke👍👍 Nice presentation, I can see you like this stove but it's not for me. Accolades aside, I just don't see any advantage to this stove except $$ over the Firebox, Bushcraft Essentials Bushbox or the tried and true Solo Stove(same form factor). Never the less, different strokes for different folks right? Thanks, enjoy!
I have the same stove and I wouldn’t say it’s good. Only real positive is the weight. I’ve had mine for a couple months and it has warped and 2 of the foot stands have broken off. And for cooking or even boiling water there’s too much smoke.
Could you do a waterproof "abuse" test on your Rugid Bigstone Duffle bag? I'm in the market for a waterproof duffel. It looks very similar to the Yeti Panga and is half the price. I'm wondering why that is and if it's really just as good. Love the content btw!
I think I could find enough things to stuff into it in my pack that it wouldn't be a big deal about the size. For sure whatever it was would have to be in a bag or something because of the char. You also have to compare it to basically nothing because you could just make your own firepit if it's permissable, but that's not always the case.
The stove looks good. I just wanted to add a brain storm to this stove for versatility, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to put a chimney on top and run it through a tent to be used as a hot tent stove. just an idea. Don’t know if it good or not.
While it is rather large for a backpack, it weighs next to nothing, and you can always fill it up with your fire starter materials, or any other items that fit inside.
I have this stove and I love it! My Stanley cook kit fits nicely inside it, along with firestarting materials so it doesn't take up that much extra room. I agree about the canvas storage bag being a bit small and alot heavy...but I use it for the protective factor anyway. I have no complaints about performance and I would worry about drilled holes weakening the overall strength of the stove, so I won't be drilling anything.
Do not quit get this product. I, and everybody else would of course find some use for the space innside the oven when you carry it, that is not a issue. I dont get why I shold pay so much for a so simple oven. There are so many good twigovens out there that could do the same job for less money. A big toaks oven are versitable, and burn cleaner. Maybe a toaks oven hides the flame to much if you like the firepit function. If you want to save money there are a lot of knocks off products to the toaks oven that maybe even works better than toaks. A big wellbuild "flatpack" titanoven must be assembled, but do the same job as naturehike oven, and works beautiful as a firepit. A flatpack oven takes no room whatever, and are easier to clean if you want to.
I made my wood stove from an empty can, way cheaper disposable, easy to carry, easy to get on any groceries store and equaly efficient, for only a couple dollars.😂

I agree. The closest stove to perfect is a firebox G2. But it’s heavy, even In titanium.

Good idea
Reminds me of what we used to make in Girl Scouts. They called it a Vagabon stove. We used large coffee or vegetable cans. These stoves work great.
My older Sister was in the Girl Scouts, back in the 1960’s. She also learned this, but they called it a Hobo Stove.
I’ve used this idea with different sizes of cans over the years. But they don’t last all that long if you build a wood fire within them.

Thanks for the vid. Yes, the stove is a bit large but it's the one you take when you want the cook and the mini, yet intimate fire pit.
I really like this stove. Being a good size and still lightweight is great. I’d drill more holes for sure.
Seriously. Boundless Voyage titanium folding multi-fuel stove Ti2010c. Hidden gem. Not joking. I've tried and tested many.

I think another con would be the giant feed port, it looks huge and would risk having coals or lit sticks fall out the side at some point.
Exactly!!
So when you gonna drill the holes in the stove and make that modication?

Problems, not issues. Issues are magazines and newspapers, not problems
What are your thoughts on this vs the smallest Solo stove? Which would you rather have if you could just have one?
Adding holes with a metal punch tool like a Whitney Punch, will give you perfect holes without the distortion caused by drilling

Are the pot supports close enough to use with a 750ml pot?
There is a good market for light weight portable contraptions that can contain a small campfire that radiates heat.
Have you ever tried the scoutfire stove (wood/pelits)
While it is rather large for a backpack, it weighs next to nothing, and you can always fill it up with your fire starter materials, or any other items that fit inside.
The Tentock one has been totally redesigned… to look like the Evernew multifuel stove… sort of.
If you add more holes you would never stop feeding it, that should be a more a pro than a con (imo)
You can put your Bourbon Whiskey in the pouch lol
Question…..have you use. In solid fuel in there?
Did you find any Bigfoot sign while you were out there testing the stove?

Maybe it would be overkill, but you could put this at the bottom of a Dakota fire hole. That should take care of the oxygen issue maybe.
