      There's something almost reverent in the way he breathes the word. No loud exclamation, just a single quietly spoken word. It conveys the sheer awe of Rexor that not only did Conan survive, he came back for more. It's almost as if that's the moment Rexor realizes they're not dealing with some common man.

      @erolegario Yes it was a screen adaptation of Conan.
      Was it a good portrayal, not really in my opinion. I want to break it down Conan has a square cut shoulder length mane of raven black hair Arnold has light brown hair Conan has volcanic blue eyes Arnold has brown eyes. Conans body is crisscrossed by many scars Arnold has no scars Conan in battle moves with pantherish grace from one opponent to the next Arnold poses and performs a useless sword flourish.

      @@mimigoodcat4950 What you missed is that you are treating it as written Bible you read. Most of us, never read the books, and I understand. I hate all Trojan War movies because I read Homer first. My experience of this movie was that it was like a Wagnerian opera, with scenes that were carried almost exclusively by the music of Basil Poledouris. Whatever flaws appear in the choreography, they somehow melded into the music and just work. For me as a boy, it was epic. As for the score by Basil Poledouris, it was an absolute masterpiece. If you read other comments, you will understand the effect from a different perspective. Just remember, it was the 80's.

    No one but no one could play Conan but Arnold, when the tempo of the music changes when Arnold turns over the cauldron with his yell, coming down the steps with his arm outstretched and sword in the other, that whole scene was Arnold. The exchange of blows between Conan and Thulsa's generals is brief yet oh so beautiful. You feel the weight behind every strike and the choreography is raw and not overtly flashy. Today such a fight would be dragged out of 10 minutes of shaky cam and a bazillion cuts and edits. The fight scenes in Conan have few cuts and only when needed and this allows the audience to keep proper track of who is swinging what at who.

      What I loved about this film is how the ‘magic’ is so low key. Thulsa Doom is clearly mortal but at the same time he has small abilities that surpass regular humans such as being able to (slowly) transform into a snake, the hypnosis stare and mental control he wields over people, and other small things like just having a very long lifespan. Not a lot of flashy spells or anything. Even Mako’s wizardry to save Conan is mostly symbolic runes, offerings and deals done via prayer, and Conan’s destiny driven apparently by subtle interventions by Crom, and a very brief manifestation of Valeria to buy him a second against Rexor.

    • @Eadbhard
      @Eadbhard 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devon8438 In most cases I would agree with you. Filmmakers tend to tweak their films so they'll appeal to a mass audience; after all, they need the revenue, and the only way to make money is to create a movie that people will want to watch.
      Nevertheless, given the popularity of the character created by Robert E. Howard, I don't think Conan's "original personality" would have been an issue at all on the big screen.
      Robert E. Howard's character has a certain psyche, charisma, and magnetism that intrigues and fascinates. This is why the original Conan stories were so popular; and because of their popularity, this is also why there are "Conan" comic books, and "Conan" movies.
      Unfortunately, the "Conan" character depicted in the comics and the films is a far cry from Robert E. Howard's creation. Fortunately for the filmmakers, "Conan the Barbarian" was a well-liked, successful movie. Even though the "Conan" in the movie scarcely resembles Robert E. Howard's character, the creators of the film somehow managed to pull off their reinvention.
      I, for one, despised the movie; I thought it sucked. Then again, I'm an ardent Robert E. Howard fan, and a Conan purist. I believe if the filmmakers kept with the original stories and perfectly mimicked the original Conan, the film might have been phenomenal.
      What burns my ass the most is this: when most people think of Conan the barbarian, they think of this fugging movie. The filmmakers eschewed Howard's Conan, and invented their own lame version of the character, a version in which most people are familiar. That's just wrong.

    Even more so that can be said for Sandahl Bergman and Gerry Lopez. Sandahl was an accomplished broadway dancer and it shows in how smoothly and beautifully she moves. She effortlessly makes striking, interesting poses in every shot. And Gerry Lopez was a long-time pro surfer. His balance, quickness and athleticism is clear in every movement as well.

Great actors are actors who can not only perform convincing and true-to-life choreography, they can also utter lines and lines of dialogue with dramatic precision and vividness. There was no long, dynamic, and stirring dialogue in this movie whatsoever. The obtuse filmmakers should have used dialogue straight from the original Conan stories written by Robert E. Howard, but they wanted to create their own version of Conan, an adaptation that pales in comparison to the "real" Conan the Barbarian. But even if they did use Robert E. Howard's prose for the dialogue in this film, the athletes would have had much difficulty acting out all of those words; after all, with the exception of Max Von Sydow and James Earl Jones, none of them were actors; hence, all of the simplistic, truncated dialogue in this hyped-up, overrated movie.
