I was around when kenner figures first came out. My Death Star Droid- (Ra7?) was shinier than shiny, so was C-3PO. They didn't have a clue about R2's head, though his torso sticker was printed perfectly as far as I remember. R5 D4's torso was really good, including red doors front and back, no blue included, where it was supposed to go.... His legs, if I remember right we're not blue, I'm almost certain they were just plain white up and down and his three main eyes were red for some reason but the top of his head looked good the shape of his head was all right it was my favorite over R2-D2 I always had R5- which for some reason in the back of my head I always called him our for D4 which is wrong I guess- going out and doing missions I thought R2 and 3PO we're supposed to be together almost all the time. I couldn't ever successfully pair up my silver Droid with my red Astromech as a pair, they didn't seem to work. I don't know why, I probably wasn't mature enough to come up with personalities for each😂 I was 5 in 1977
@15:30 “But I did…” LOL, I don’t know but it cracks me up the way you say this here, and like so many of us Fans (fantastics!) who do what no regular person would do! And if you ever get to the Mandalorian I’d LOVE to know what all the droids are in the Mando series, and if they are props used in any of the movies, created just for the show, cgi, or even fan-built droids as I heard are sometimes used (true or not?)…now that would be awesome if you go past the movies for future vids. @No Skill Customs the droid in the briefing you are asking about is Gold Leader's astromech. He is seen in the behind the scenes pic and he is R4-I9's body with his own unique black R2 dome with silver panels that can be seen in some behind the scenes pics for the rebel starfighter droids. The hero scale model Y-Wing frequently called "TIE Killer" for the TIE kill mark on it is commonly accepted as Gold Leader's and has a black R2 in it that can be seen in the film while approaching the Death Star in the non-special edition. He has no name, so I just call him R2-G1. There is a second R2 near "R2-G1" that GreenAlfonzo identified on his astromech page: www.angelfire.com/droid/astromechs/ It is an R2 with green details on the body and R2-D2's legs, and green panels on an R2-D2 head. In discussions, GreenAlfonzo and I settled on identifying him as Gold 2's droid so I call him R2-G2. The hero scale model commonly called "gray" or "tiger sprocket" Y-Wing has a silver headed droid that is hard to see the panel colors on and can be seen in a log of Y-Wing shots in the film, and by process of elimination of all other R2s must be Gold 2's. (We also decided the plain R5 with black pinstripes is Gold 5's since the pyro model "triangles" lacked a droid, this is the same for pyro model for Gold 3 so with only R4-I9 with no ship I assign him to Gold 3.).
I forgot, the Red droid in the X-Wing you see is in the Red Leader X-Wing hero model. They made an R4 dome for Red 4 pyro model, but the R5 droids in Red Leader, Red 6, and Red 12 are just R2 heads painted the color of their full scale R5 head. Red 2 hero model's R2 head is much more subtly trimmed in red (and was switched as they are removable, or repainted in it's current state in the LucasFilm archives). Red 12 pyro model had a yellow/orange with red panel R2 head representing the R5-A2 full scale dome. Except for a few quick shots, all the X-Wings seen on screen are the hero models for Red Leader, Red 2, Red 3, and Red 5.
@@noskillcustoms Nice. I haven't talked to GreenAlfonzo in a few years and it looks like he last updated the Rebel astromech page in 2016. He put a low res image of a diagram I did to explain the Yavin squadrons' droids at the bottom of the page.
This is just lovely, and set me on an adventure through all your videos. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this, and share your amazing knowledge with us! Also, your kid’s puppet shows are darling too :) I am looking forward to any future videos!
Saw R3T6 behind Darth Vader, and wanted to know more. Still think it's pretty amazing that R2D2 and C3PO could survive the Tantave IV, the Death Star, Hoth and so on, when other droids did not. Of course that's because they're near the main characters! Imagine if C3PO "died" on Hoth and was replaced by another actor playing the white protocol droid! Maybe if Anthony Daniels had died? However, it's ridiculous to have them in the prequels, to not only survive those events but hang around for 20 years until _A New Hope!_
I had seen the black gonk droid in this clip before th-cam.com/video/mpuJHE6z24k/w-d-xo.html but I thought it was entirely cut from the movie. When I was making this video I spotted it in the scanning crew scene and shouted so loud I just about woke up my kids down the hall. I couldn’t believe it had just been there all this time and I never saw it, and then to see it again during the battle scene was pretty surprising, too!
I love that idea! It’d be like 3 hours long, though. I’m definitely thinking about how I could do it...maybe group them by species? We’ll see...I still have quite a few original trilogy videos I want to do before I delve into the prequels.
I can see that argument, but most consider the Kenner Power droid to be based on the Lars Homestead droid at 7:31 in the video. If you look the white and black horizontal stripes are the same on the figure as they are in the movie.
Also if you're old enough to have gotten those original Kenner toys if you got the Droid Factory kit it happened to have a center leg for an Astromech droid it was too long to fit into either of the figures you can buy like are two or R5 but if you cut the top of it off it fit perfectly so you could have a three-legged Droid😊
Before you go chopping anymore parts to your droid factory set…I want you to know lots of places make 3D printed shorter 3rd legs to fit the standard figures
R4-M9 to me has always been cream and brown. I’m sure it’s the filter they used on the non special editions. On closer inspection he might have been a dark olive Green without the filter at most
He’s tough to figure out for sure…DVD, Blu Ray, Disney+ --every time I watch I have a different opinion! They did have some strange lighting especially with a new hope. When Luke and Obi Wan go into docking bay 94 a Saurin alien walks by and his shirt (which is green) changes from green to red as he goes from left to right-and green and red are opposites!
Thank you for confirming this for me. FYI- I also missed one droid- there is a droid in Docking Bay 94 with red lights while Han is working on the ship.
Pretty good but you messed up the Gonks. The second one you mention IS in Mos Eisley but the one behind the Landspeeder is a different one, the one from the Sandcrawler is only by the Cantina. The fourth one you mention on the sandcrawler is just the first one stuck in the background. The yellow one can be seen in a cut scene where an old lady yells at Luke when he's going to anchorhead for the cut Biggs scene (and also in the ESB when Chewie finds C-3PO in the junk room). There IS another one on the Sandcrawler but it's pretty difficult to see. There is a second DS Gonk but you can only see it in cut scenes. Also the R5 in the briefing room scene isn't R5-D4 it's just the white one with black trim. Red Leader's R5 in the briefing room has a white body instead of all red like on the figure and the cut DS scene. There is also another silver headed R2 in the briefing room. R5-D4(8) can be seen on Yavin in some BTS photos next to an X-wing. (also I think he is missing some of the blue trim when in front of the Sandcrawler when Luke is inspecting him). Probably more I'm forgetting too.
Awesome info thank you! I just wanted to comment on each point you made... 1) Mos Eisley/landspeeder droid- This is one where I disagree with you, actually. I really think that as you watch the one behind the landspeeder turn to the right, his markings actually match the droid seen in sandcrawler/outside the cantina. The image I have in the bottom right shows the front and side to confirm this. 2) I swear that I had footage of the “two” gonk droids in question in the same shot, but I can’t find it so you’re probably right the 1st and 4th are most likely the same droid. 3) Thank you so much for pointing that out! You don’t know how bad I wanted a full shot of that droid! Perfect! I’m going to feature it in a future video and I’ll give you a shout out. In the meantime, if anyone else is reading this, the scene with the old woman is featured in the 1st blu Ray box edition of episodes 1-6 on the 4-6 archives disc. 4) If you’re talking the cut Death Star cut scene where the droid “jumps” in the air a little then runs off screen, I’m pretty sure it’s the same guy as in the docking bay- they have the same Mickey Mouse ears on top. 5) That’s just bad video editing on my part I wasn’t trying to say that that was R5-D4/8 I was just moving on to the next scene, but I wasn’t very clear. However, do you know where I might find a full body shot of that R5 unit? 6) Red Leader’s R5- oddly enough, I just found that out yesterday. Pretty weird, definitely going to mention that in a future video 7) Silver headed R2- Just learned about this, too. The one with the green panels, right? Very cool, another easy custom, too. Overall, I really appreciate the feedback, thank you! I should run my “All the droids in “Jedi” “video past you before I upload it! :)
