How to fix 1964 Fender Princeton Low gain weak tube guitar amp Step by step

  • Another great repair. From low gain to monster sound. I approached this repair systematically, hopefully to catch the flaw along the way. Turns out that the issue was due to past maintenance. Either way, when working on these old amps, always install fresh capacitors. These have been in service almost 60 years. Failure is right around the corner. These old amplifiers have beat the odds. Still operating and will continue as long as they get periodic check ups. This Princeton is not original, however still sounds great!

AHHHH! Seeing the Snozzeramus Ungar is like seeing an old friend. You Know that when it shows up, there's going to be some serious $#!% going down! Please keep up the excellent work, Terry!
Tony Kuzmano is a valuable tester! If it passes his test, it Rocks!

Nice video, very informative, but painful at the same time, seeing all those original parts being replaced only to find out they were perfectly fine and the problem was elsewhere (volume pot and input jack)!

Amp sounds fabulastic. Love it when an amp tech looks around and finds stuff and makes it like new, when it ain't!

Hey, if you ever need to replace that SNOZARAMUS iron, have a look at the JBC soldering stations. They have the power to solder large ground plains.
    Cheers

I liked both tube choices. The bite of the original would suit live and the mellowness of the replacement practice. Both tubes, but switchable and twice as much output power... Guitar players are never satisfied... As it happens the channel switching on my Super 60 already does exactly that. And LOUD! Nice little amp. Thanks.

I personally don't like those multiple cap cans. If one cap (usually the first one, which has to take the biggest ripple current peaks) of that multiple cap can fails, you have a problem. I prefer the dog house and normal axial capacitors which can be changed individually.
I would be quite suspicious about those old coupling caps as well, especially output tube coupling caps. If they failed, output tubes would be in danger.

Yes,coupling caps' can be a big problem,in these older Fenders'!

Great to see & hear Tony again! What do you think the output watts were with the different wreckdum-fire tubes! 3 or 4 watts? I could tell some different tone differences between the 2 tubes, but could not tell the volume changes. It really does not matter. You did a great job, as always, on getting this little jewel back up in form! Thanks for another guitar amp project Terry! And thank you Tony for tickling the strings on the beautiful Tele! Thanxz

Incidentally, if you lack a suitable Snozzeramus you can solder to a steel chassis very well by clamping the threaded end of a 4-5" 1/4-20 or 5/16 bolt in a pair of vice grips and heating up the head in a propane torch. File the head semi-clean if it's a rusty dog. Stop heating before red heat. Use it just like you would a big fat soldering iron. You don't really have to tin the bolt-head. Works perfect.

How much extra power is it putting out?? Has it been modded to run like a deluxe with 22 watts?? It could be a weber transformer used as a replacement. Weber in their clones use power trans that run both princetons or deluxes. I could be mistaken,,,, I often am!! And I've heard that you can drop in deluxe power and output tranny's in a prince ton with out any drama.

Good Morning. Here in Brazil, in the 60s, the company Giannini launched some tube ampules inspired by Fender's projects. I have the Thunder Sound Bass model that was based on Bassman and I have Valiant, based on Pinceton. Could you give me an email address so I can send you some pictures? Regarding the Valiant model, it has 6v6 on the output and the card is 436VDC, -31VDC bias. I would like to be able to exchange information with Mr. Thank you.

If my solid-state Made in Mexico Fender Princeton 65 doesn't sell on Reverb, I'm going to send it to you sometime in the future, and get you to rip it apart, and rebuild on that chassis, and make me a RatRod Deluxe 1x12 with some 6L6 power tubes and 12AX7 preamp tubes, like a little mini Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier...If that is something you can do? If so, is there any way you can shoot me a rough estimate of how much the parts and labor would be (email is on my About page here on YT)? You can video the build. That would be a cool series. 👍🏻
