Professional 4K Time-Lapse With a Compact Camera?

  • Time-lapse photographers, and photographers in general, seem to be obsessed with gear. Cameras, lenses, tripods, filters, motion control systems, whatever. I did an experiment and tried to create a time-lapse video using only a compact camera and a mini tripod, costing no more than 700USD all together.
The camera in this video is a Leica D-LUX (Typ 109). This is the exact same camera as the Panasonic LX100 (amzn.to/2cwExdb). The tripod is a Manfrotto PIXI Mini Table Top Tripod (amzn.to/2ciDZLI). No other equipment was used. If you want to see what gear I use on a regular basis, please check out this video: • What's In My Camera Ba...
Make sure to follow me on Instagram @morten.rustad ( / morten.rustad ) for more frequent updates from my trips.
The time-lapse is produced in cooperation with Turbin Film (www.turbinfilm.no)

The message is clear: it is not the camera that creates the wonder of a good picture or video but the person driving it (so to speak). Thanks for the video and a Q&A would be terrific.

Greetings from the uK. I have the Lumix LX100 and I have done some quite good time lapse with it but after watching this video I now know that I have lots more to learn. Its true to say that its the person behind the camera that is important and with this video you have proved that. Thank you for sharing this.

Lime I always say a person who knows what he/she is doing can do wonders with gear like this. Give the best camera in the world to someone who doesn’t know what to do with it and he/she will not produce any work at all. Gear matters only when you know what to do with the tools at hand. Great time lapses though. I really enjoyed it!

  • @whitefirepl4566

Great. An expensive camera can actually be an obstacle when you shoot time lapses, when you calculate the cost relative to shutter count... The only time lapses I recently shot with my dslr are the milky way shots (it really needs high sensitivity), and I for a while now have been wondering about another, cheaper solution for other time lapses. So thanks, this video is very useful!

Great video and very important thought about the "importance" of the equipment but my question is, how did you get that seamless movement without using any dolly?. I guess you have played some with the photo area shown like Ken Burn effect?. And another question is, does this camera allow to take automatic photos at intervals? . Thanks
