Stephen is the only late night host who knows how to interview human beings. To ask thoughtful questions, and then to get out of the way. To listen. To be sincere and not try to overtalk the guest. To appreciate history, and to confront difficult subjects with reverence and intimacy. Over my 67 years I have always admired Elton John, and view him as a true living legend. It is so sweet to see how happy he is. This was an exemplary interview! Three great artists being authentic, and letting us watch.
Agree 100% about Steve's interviewing. Compared with those who interject, laughing at their own jokes (mostly thinking of daytime gals) and completely overshadowing any semblance we could have learned about who the interviewees really are. Probably why SNL talk show skits always give their "interviewees" about one line per sketch!
Can't stand Stephen's political shtick but his interviews of Elton shows there's more to him. It's sad to discover great interviewers from long ago on TH-cam and realize it's almost a lost art today.
Brandi Carlile is the glue holding all of this music history together. Selflessly and with honor. Great in her own right, she bows to those before her and with grace.
When she supported Wynona Judd after Naomi’s passing and was there instantly and gave honor, it was an amazing act. She just shows up to any great moment (that includes both sad and exuberant moments.) Gracefully. th-cam.com/video/rPWUQLGZ-4E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yFbwOfM-7gwW7zIF
An interview for the ages. I hope Elton just goes on and on. I remember hearing ‘Daniel’ when I was much younger and being so impressed with the honesty and genuine feeling in the song. It’s gone through his whole life. I’ve stayed in a ward in a hospital, where Elton paid for a kitchen so the people there wouldn’t have to eat less than nutritious hospital food. I remember the countless concerts and fundraisers he’s done for people with AIDS. He’s a great great man, one in billions.
I still listen to "Daniel" once in a while, and also "Empty Garden", Elton's tribute to John Lennon. Two powerfully reflective anthems that just seem to resonate for me.
I couldn’t stop smiling during this segment. This is pure joy in our world. God knows we need Elton’s grace more than ever. I’m 52 and my life has been backgrounded by his music. I don’t know if he can ever understand the universal scope of his music.
I first heard Elton John in 1970. I first saw him live in 1982, I was so emotional that night - I cried through most of that concert. At this point in my life I have seen him live 19 times. I still cry everytime I see him play Sorry seems to be the hardest Word. He is my absolute idol, i can't imagine life without his magical presence.
Quite possibly, the most entertaining interview that I remember Colbert conducting. Of course, lots of storytelling greatness from Elton, as well as Brandi, later on, but extremely poignant queries by Stephen...Much appreciated, all THREE OF YOU !! This 71yo Oregonian loves all of ya !!
Smiling and crying through both segments of this interview because of the light that Elton John's music is and has given to me in my life and to the world. Thank you, Sir Elton John for all your glorious light, of so many lifetimes that filled so many hearts. Thank you, Brandi Carlile for your helping keep that light of Elton and Joni alive. And thank you Stephen for this interview. So much light and so much love. It takes ones breath away.
It’s amazing what can happen when you write Elton a letter. At least back in 2010 anyway. April 6, 2010 8:05pm to be exact. Backstage in Corpus Christi, TX thanking Elton for the years of music and being shoulder to shoulder for a picture. Bucket list done!
My daughter surprised me 6 years ago, May 25th, 2018. She took me to my very first and only Elton John concert. He has been my favorite artist since I was 10yrs old. That was the best concert ever! I honestly didn't think I would ever see him live. Now that is a concert I will never forget.
This is a MUCH better format than the standard - get rid of the desk and have 2-4 guests on simultaneously for longer chats. It draws you in much better.
I had the privilege of greeting Elton (et al) on the tarmac at LAX in a red London double decker bus on his first trip to LA, and after experiencing his show at the Troubadour have remained a lifetime fan. So stoked that he's such a solid, talented cat, and a true soul survivor. HIs music is woven through the tapestry of our lives, and uplifted so many.
I read Elton's book, and it's amazing how humble and grateful he is to everyone who helped him get where he is today. He is truly a hero. I wish he would get together with Dolly for a song if not an album.
So amazing to see Sir Elton and Brandi. Fantastic interview with both. Does my heart good and made me smile a lot. He has been my favourite artist for over 50 years. Thanks Stephen.
What a gift this conversation is. May we each have people in our lives that inspire us, and become inspirations and encouragement to those that follow. Thank you Stephen!
Elton, the epitome of 'paying it forward', how refreshing to hear his heartfelt position on helping others. And Brandi, for me there is no equal 👑 Stephen bringing them together for us is such a gift
Let me say Brandi is one talented musician. I have seen her live in concert many times. She step on stage and played "Bohemia Rhapsody" and she blew me away. She is one big album from becoming the next great recording artist in the pop-rock genre.
Cold cold heart Pardoned by you -Dawn Marie Reed was my best friend at Andrews Academy and she loved this song. It causes me to cry every time…I’ve been reunited with her “mum,” and hearing Elton sung it w Dua Lipa, causes those beautiful tears again. 😢❤❤❤
Dawn was murdered by her fiancé, she was on life support for 15 years which wrecked her mum ((English phonetically written) financially, and broke my heart. I visited her in this state, rubbed Aveda hand relief on her clenched hands w dead skin that was difficult to get the smell off of mine. Every time I left, I’d say, “Dawn, I have to leave now.” She would get visibly upset and kick her legs … This man who choked her, was not brought to justice. His prior two girlfriends had restraining orders against him for choking them (MO- modus operandi), and I am working on making that happen. 😢❤
Elton I love you so much! I first saw you in 1972, Madman Across The Water Tour and, I was completely blown away by your voice and the masterful way you command a piano. It's been said so many times about so many people but, you changed my life and I am a better person from the way you give and give and give. The story of Ryan White was tragic but, you gave him hope and purpose and for that, I love you. We could sure use that kind of kindness and compassion today. Thank you and thanks to Bernie for such an amazing body of work. ❤
Oh my. Elton John and Brandi Carlile together on your stage. Sir Elton John's music is the music of my entire life. Thank you. This was such a wonderful interview. Made my day.
Brandi’s version of Madman Across the Water was my introduction to her. I was channel surfing one night and she was on Austin City Limits. Her voice captured me, so I kept watching and then she blew my mind with that song. I’ve been an Elton fan since that album came out and a Brandi fan since that night. Love them both.
Thx Stephen for having two of the GREATEST ENTERTAINERS on together. An ELTON AND BRANDI FAN FROM BOTH OF THEIR STARTS, my life has been better because of their music. So proud Brandi has grown to do the same that Elton has with new and older musicians that truly deserve more exposure than they get. We can all aspire to be as loving and kind as these examples of humanity❤️ KEEP ON ROCKIN❣️
Wow. Just opened up my experience of him in such a new way. He certainly has meant so much to so many people. Fun fact my closest people know: Sir Elton John was my imaginary friend when I was little-beginning at maybe 5 or 6 in the early 70s-when I needed someone magical and kind to “save my life tonight” from some pretty horrible childhood traumas. I still love that he was the popular figure I felt fit that role best. Grateful…
Loved this Interview and extremly happy and honored to have been alive on this Planet at the same time in History that Elton John shared his musical gifts! Thank you Elton (and Belinda) for being a guest on Stephen's show and Stephen thank you for your thoughtful, curious and respectful questions for this (EGOT!) Musical Genius! 🙏🏻🎶😁❤️🇺🇸
Dude... I went to high school with Phil and Tim Hanseroth... We partied so hard through high school... They were in a band named "Chutzpah" and I was at every show and practice!
I was at the Fillmore West venue in 1970 in San Francisco when Elton was second on the bill. Needless to say, he stole the show. We sat on the floor, no chairs, until he started playing...then we were on our feet. I will never forget that night. Thank you Elton for such wonderful entertainment.
I'm glad he mentioned Tumbleweed connection. That was my introduction to Elton, and even though I didn't really consider it country music per se; I loved so many tunes on that record. In my playing days, I performed several of those songs. "Where to Now St Peter, Talking Old Soldiers, My Father's Gun, Country Comfort, Amoreena. Brandi looks beautiful, seems like a sweet soul. How cool that they're good friends.
I don’t know if you ever got a chance to see that PBS special that Elton John and Bernie Taupin did where they won the Gershwin prize? A lot of artists came and did covers of their songs and Metallica did a cover of love lies bleeding/. Funeral for a friend !! Brandi did an amazing cover of mad man across the water and also of skyline pigeon
It's on my Spotify list - _Love it!_ I also watched Metallica _killing_ it on the PBS Gershwin special. It's available here, on YT if anyone is interested. It was so cool seeing John & Taupin's positive responses to hearing it being played so differently _and_ brilliantly. The entire night must have been such a rewarding experience for everyone.
I highly recommend finding that Gershwin Prize program and watching Metallica’s version of Love Lies Bleeding. That song means a lot to me, too. I was in a one-sided relationship with a guy who did leave me, a woman, for another man. Later, I heard this guy had died of AIDS, so the Funeral For A Friend portion of the song became the music where I mourned him.
Elton John played in San Antonio, Texas on May 21, 1971, & 17 Aug 1973, San Antonio Convention Center, USA, Summer 1973 Tour, I was there BOTH TIMES! It was AMAZING!! Great memories!! & Such a great concert, both times. The last time, I was at stage edge with my friends dancing & singing, rocking out to SATURDAY NIGHT! fun like you can ONLY imagine!! & we had a blast, he threw his hand towel to me!!!
It was early to mid 70's ; it was the first concert I ever went to, and I lost my virginity that night to a very sweet boy. I'm 64 now, and I find myself grateful . With all the shit life throws at you over the years, at least I have that for a sweet moment in my life, and elton doesn't just help me remember , he helps bring it home .
I first heard Elton John coming back from Baltimore on the back of a motorcycle. He was doing a concert outside and we stopped and listened. Was fantastic!!
I love Elton John. The greatest artist of all time. I grew up with his music. I love almost every song he's ever sang, and every song Bernie Taupin wrote for him. They are an incredible team. Artistic geniuses.
Few people, if any, have done the work of Brandi Carlile in re-invigorating the careers of our still-living musical legends. The list seems to keep growing. I don't believe Joni Mitchel would be singing today if not for her. Her work with Tanya Tucker was lightning in a bottle! Keep up the great work!
I never fail to tape &/or watch Live, the GREAT Stephen Colbert! so i would have recorded this Show regardless; But this one - from START>FINISH - this just became my #1 Fav Show of ALL of THEM! I was glued to literally every Convo, every word; so Inspirational & Insightful; Moving, Touching, Authentic, Heartwarming .....
This MFing interview!! Just incredible: my favorite artist of all time with HER favorite artist of all time??! Oh, and being brilliantly interviewed by my favorite TV host?! Icing on an already delicious cake 🍰 🤤 👏THANK! 👏👏 YOU!! 👏👏👏
An Amazing interview! I was lucky enough to see/hear Elton John in a concert, and it was truly breath-taking and enjoyable. Definitely one time I did not regret the outrageous concert fees we seem to have in my country! I also applaud Stephen for knowing when to ask questions, and when to sit back and listen for a while.
Elton John … Tumbleweed Connection… Madman Across The Water… Honky Chateau Don’t Shoot Me… Yellow Brick Road… were my top albums by Elton John… for me… I missed the John Lennon performance at MSG by ONE night…!!! Glad he’s in a good place in his life… Thanks for all the music ( Bernie too) !!! 🎶🎵🌻🎵🎶
At young age first hearing him I was mesmerized by the beautiful combination of music and lyrics then found out it was such a wonderful collaboration of Elton and Bernie Taupin.
Given my morning schedule, I barely have enough time to get through the monologue and Meanwhile. I watched both EJ segments twice. 😢 I am starting today feeling emotionally moved. And late for work.
Oh, how fortunate for Sir Elton John. Here he is, sitting down with Brandi Carlile, someone that originally had no knack for any instruments until she heard his work. It inspired her to learn how to play the piano and get good enough that she could compose her own songs, and now she’s famous for it, too.
The best artists in the world are just as good live as on their records. Elton John and Celine Dion live concerts remain the best live concerts that I have ever attended!
Stephen is the only late night host who knows how to interview human beings. To ask thoughtful questions, and then to get out of the way. To listen. To be sincere and not try to overtalk the guest. I adore Colbert's compassion and intelligence. Ms Carlile radiates class and light. And Elton is sheer delight. Huge heart, massive talent.

You put it much nicer than what i thought.

She bridges every genre and brings together lots of artists. I love her.
100% she got Joni to come back and take her Joni jams to stage
An interview for the ages. I hope Elton just goes on and on. I remember hearing ‘Daniel’ when I was much younger and being so impressed with the honesty and genuine feeling in the song. The talent, connectivity, kindness, humility... I feel so lucky to live in this time. I hope Brandi carries on Elton's intention.
Wow, Stephen this interview is absolutely wonderful with Sir Elton John & Brandi! I've been an Elton fan since the 1970's.
I couldn’t stop smiling during this segment. This is pure joy in our world. God knows we need Elton’s grace more than ever. I’m 52 and my life has been backgrounded by his music. I don’t know if he can ever understand the universal scope of his music.

This was a fantastic 30 minutes between the two segments. What a lucky night for the audience to be there.
Yes! the set up of "Who's YOUR Elton John?" was absolutely brilliant 👏😄👏
Watching this makes me realize how, damn lucky I am to have grow up when I did. At 71yrs old I know I had the best musical childhood❤
We grew up with the greatest music. 🥰🥰🥰
Bless you. Merry Christmas.
Amen. 69 and so grateful for elders who keep doing what we must.
Was thirteen 1973 my first concert... Newcastle UK
I was just thinking the same thing and I'm 67 you lived a little more in the 50s music also that was so wonderful
He comes across humble and like a regular guy but hes definitely a legend and icon
Smiling and crying through both segments of this interview because of the light that Elton John's music is and has given to me in my life and to the world. Elton, my favorite song of yours
....harmony... 🎶
Three people together who I couldn't love more
The brilliance on the screen right now... Love them BOTH so much... Thank You, Stephen!

Best Christmas present- this interview
THANK YOU ELTON ONE OF THE TRUE GREATS
This is a MUCH better format than the standard - get rid of the desk and have 2-4 guests on simultaneously for longer chats. It draws you in much better.
This interview is the best Christmas gift you could ever give: thanks #Colbert.
Probably the best Colbert segment I’ve ever seen! Elton is a giant, and Brandi is becoming a giant. Total class!
Thank you so much for doing this extended interview! What an absolute joy! I really hope he knows how much he is loved and appreciated.
Great job to Stephen for his WONDERFUL questions in this interview with 2 legions.
I’m always in awe of his ability to “go there”…
KUDOS! ⭐️

God, Brandi Carlile is gorgeous. And what a talent! "The Joke" remains one of my favorite songs.
She looks like a man, dresses like a man. Gorgeous? Really?
She still looks exactly like she did in her 20s when I first found her and her music. A beautiful person insie and out.
I read Elton's book, and it's amazing how humble and grateful he is to everyone who helped him get where he is today. He is
truly a hero. I wish he would get together with Dolly for a song if not an album.
that was the most spectacular interview ever! Thank you!
So amazing to see Sir Elton and Brandi. Fantastic interview with both. Does my heart good and made me smile a lot. He has been my favourite artist for over 50 years. Thanks Stephen.
AMAZING INTERVIEW.....THANK YOU STEPHEN ❣
One of the most rewarding, heartwarming and revealing interviews I’ve ever seen on TV. An unassuming and almost humble superstar.
What a gift this conversation is. May we each have people in our lives that inspire us, and become inspirations and encouragement to those that follow. Thank you Stephen!
Just sitting there... in lime green frames, while two giants in Entertainment call themselves your 'disciples'.
Legend.

Queen😊
She is so dang talented and vibrant! I felt the same with her playing and singing with Soundgsrden. Man, I was in heaven
@@jackwidmann1373 me too!
Love how Elton gives to younger artists! ✨😊. The Linda Lindas etc... ✨
Brandi Carlisle is so gracious and amazing!🤩
"Your Song" 💖
Elton always gives a good interview, he's very witty, and quick.
Cold cold heart

Brandi Carlile seems like a keeper of the older generation of musicians, its very sweet.
Lot's of class and musical integrity ....✨️🌿✨️🌿✨️🌿
My husband said the same thing! So, so true!
Dude... I went to high school with Phil and Tim Hanseroth...
We partied so hard through high school... They were in a band named "Chutzpah" and I was at every show and practice!
Class act.
I had the same thought, with her relationships with Joni Mitchell and EJ
I was at the Fillmore West venue in 1970 in San Francisco when Elton was second on the bill. Needless to say, he stole the show. We sat on the floor, no chairs, until he started playing...then we were on our feet. I will never forget that night. Thank you Elton for such wonderful entertainment.
I can't even imagine what it would be like to grow up and be best friends with your childhood hero. That idea blows my mind.😮🥰😲🤯
This is a rock and roll legend.
In the 70s Elton was a god.
I don’t know why but I find these to sitting together and loving one another so moving…
I'm glad he mentioned Tumbleweed connection. That was my introduction to Elton, and even though I didn't really consider it country music per se; I loved so many tunes on that record. If you haven't listened to much Brandi, check her out - she's got tons of great tunes and collaborations out there.
Love Lies Bleeding--Funeral for a Friend. Best song ever written. How come we never hear it?

Shout out to the King County Library!!!

✨✨✨
Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Come Down In Time, 60 Years On.. some of the best songs.
One of the best shows ever...
I saw a video of Brandi covering "Madman", one of the best performances I've ever seen.
I love love love Brandi Carlile. Having her as the new generation with Elton John is simply fantastic! ❤❤
*The first Elton John song I ever heard was "Durban Deep" and that was because I got a copy of the Sleeping With The Past album. Greatest EJ album.*
elton john wears all his rings to keep his powers at bay
Oh Wow! So sweet!
From writing a letter to Elton John to now vacationing at his home with him and his family.
Elton John … Tumbleweed Connection… Madman Across The Water… Honky Chateau
Don’t Shoot Me… Yellow Brick Road… were my top albums by Elton John… for me…
I missed the John Lennon performance at MSG
by ONE night…!!! Glad he’s in a good place in his life… Thanks for all the music ( Bernie too) !!!
🎶🎵🌻🎵🎶
Merry Christmas 🎉Elton
WONDERFUL!! Thank you so much! I'm gonna go looking for that documentary!!
Elton forgot to say to the question, who touched his heart and was one of his inspirations was
Leon Russell! 🎉 🎹
He learned to play piano like Leon.
Thank you for the Joni reference.
Gotta adore ElTon❤
Tumbleweed Connection 1970, I was 13. I still know all the lyrics. A couple weeks and 55 years of fandom for me!
That’s such a great album. ☺️
As is Captain Fantastic & The Brown-Dirt Cowboy. 🙌🏼
Grammy score: Elton (5) / Brandi (11) and no crushed Elton ego? Says a lot about the guy🫡
He used to care, now he’s chill.
Latter day serenity ❤
A perfect interview.
At young age first hearing him I was mesmerized by the beautiful combination of music and lyrics then found out it was such a wonderful collaboration of Elton and Bernie Taupin.
72 yrs old and one of my fave albums is still Madman Across the Water! It truly moved my teenaged heart.
Latter Day Serenity. There is a title for the next Elton John album
Agreed
Given my morning schedule, I barely have enough time to get through the monologue and Meanwhile. I watched both EJ segments twice. 😢 I am starting today feeling emotionally moved. And late for work.
😂 but totally worth it, right? absolutely brilliant 🤩
❤❤Elton John!
Saw Elton John yellow brick road tour 2020 Australian (Hanging Rock) summer- fantastic magical
As well as being a fantastic artist, Elton John is such a proactive supporter of new musicians. What a geezer.
Gotta adore ElTon,🎉
I think Elton is the Mozart of our day...
Thanks for a great interview
Oh, how fortunate for Sir Elton John. Here he is, sitting down with Brandi Carlile, someone that originally had no knack for any instruments until she heard his work. It inspired her to learn how to play the piano and get good enough that she could compose her own songs, and now she’s famous for it, too.
The best artists in the world are just as good live as on their records. Elton John and Celine Dion live concerts remain the best live concerts that I have ever attended!
Yes Queen, so much love to Elton, and Brandi, wow.
"Your Song" his best song. Listened to it over and over. Skating rink music. Memories.😊
Love, Love Love!!!
Wonderful!!! I wish they had sung their song!!!
I LOVED my Here and There album. Skyline pigeon and Love Lies Bleeding/Funeral For a Friend were my favorites.
Elton is class and has always been about the progression of music and building his community!
