Interesting bridge. When I was about 10 years old, we went on a family vacation from Independence to New Orleans. I remember during that trip we drove across Lake Ponchatrain. The bride was 24 miles long if I remember correctly. When we got in the middle, you couldn't see land in front or behind us. There was no superstructure. It was just a long flat concrete pavement all the way.
Very cool! I very much enjoyed the ride across the bridge. We have bridge a few miles to the north of us that has a railroad on top and car traffic below...the Oliver Bridge. I think Lucy Lu hit it lucky. She has a good home now! Be safe my friend!
I punched that "Oliver Bridge" into the Search bar on TH-cam..... and there is a video of it... Josh O takes us on a ride across the bridge... Man oh man.... I sure learn a lot on the TH-cam... That is amazing... I am not sure that Lucy Lu realizes that she is a dog!! Haha!! Thank you my friend!!
Thank you my friend!!! There is a free bridge 20 miles to the North or 20 miles to the South.... so many times the delay waiting for the barge is the same as the drive time to go around .... This is shorter... But, Not always quicker!!! ;-)
Great video Bill, that was cool. I've never seen a swing-span bridge before, and thanks for putting that historical tidbit underneath. It does seem like it could be a hindrance when there's a lot of barge traffic.
This is the shorter route.... But, not always the faster route!! ;-) It is and old Bridge for sure... I am sure that they would build it much differently today.... Thanks for watching, Eric!!! ;-)
Wow, that was a huge bridge. They have some big double-decker bridges in Cincinnati going over the Ohio but they don't swing. Thanks for taking us along, and I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
I have been to Cincinnati a few times.. Yep!! Man, we had a great time.... Many family members from all over came this year... I sure hope that you had fun my friend!!
Awesome video Bill Goudy!!! Looks like a very well structured bridge and that barge was quite big too!!!! They make you wait all that time and they still charge you $2. Take care Bill Goudy!!!!!
They keep raising the toll and saying that it is for bridge maintenance... But, I haven't seen any major work on it in years.... There is a free bridge 20 miles to the North or 20 miles to the South.... so many times the delay waiting for the barge is the same as the drive time to go around and not wait for the barge .... This way is shorter.... But, not always quicker!!! Thanks, Rodney ;-)
That was an awesome bridge video! Our tolls are between 5-7 bucks. I love lighthouses and bridges. My mom watched this video with me, because she is from Iowa. Love Lucy-Lu, beautiful dog. Two thumbs up on this one! take care, Bill! :)
This is down in the South East corner of Iowa... About 40 Miles North of the Missouri border... I guess Paying the 2 bucks isn't so bad compared to yours.... There are 2 more bridges that are free, but you got to drive about 20 miles to the North or 20 miles to the South.... This is the fastest way...unless you get caught by a barge and must wait... Then it is worth the trip to bypass it!!
thats awesome! we used to travel alot on the bay bridge into San Francisco... its a double decker and parts fell on top of cars in the quake of 89... crazy... that was a day ill tell ya!
great video Bill, fantastic bridge 25 cents to 2 dollars things sure have changed hahaaa most times not for the better, i like your friend she is a nice looking dog, thanks for the video bill, have a great weekend and take care!!!
Man oh man... I have had some tell me that they are paying $5.00 Bucks toll in some other areas... I guess ... $2 Bucks isn't so bad.... But, I would rather pay a Quarter..... Haha..... Thank you
Hey Bill! Subscribed to Virtual Railfan last week and was curious about the bridge. VR cameras are blocked by some trees. Found this video which explains it pretty well. No swing bridges here in New Jersey(that I know of). A few drawbridges on the Delaware between NJ and Philly.
You might like this link, John... It lists a 101 swing span bridges in the world. I know that this list is now out of date. About 5 years ago they replaced the bridge in Burlington, Iowa with a lift section bridge ... This list says that the old Burlington swing bridge was built in 1892 and is still in use. Nope, they now have a new bridge... Anyway... There are about a hundred swing span bridges located at various locations around the world! structurae.net/en/structures/bridges/swing-bridges/list Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice Bill. Why do you have to stop so far ahead of the super slow barge? What does BNSF stand for? Glad to see your companion with you. That's friendship forever. And as an ex- mechanical and electrical technician I can promise you things every where in the world are not built to last anymore and haven't been for many years. God bless.
Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Rail Road... They own the Bridge. They can not stop a Barge quickly.. So they contact the Bridge by radio and they allow the extra time incase the Bridge malfunctions and doesn't or is unable to open... Those Barges do not stop on a dime... ;-) The barge has the right away...... They would build the bridge higher now a days.... Any way the bridge operator gets paid by the hour... They don't care if you are in a hurry or not... You can cross for free about 20 miles to the North or 20 Miles to the South. This is shorter, but not always quicker.. ;-)
I would go crazy sitting in my truck waiting 20 or 30 minutes for a big barge to go under... Man Oh Man, what if there were 2 of 'em???? I reckon you'd be there an hour!!! -Chris
That happens... or if the bridge malfunctions.. That is the chance you take going this way... There is a free bridge 20 miles to the North or 20 miles to the South.... so many times the delay waiting for the barge is the same as the drive time to go around .... This is shorter... But, Not always quicker!!! ;-)
Bill, you could make a ham sandwich look interesting. I bet you were bored out of your tree but made for an interesting on-the-fly video. Thanks for the historical schooling on the Fort Madison Bridge.
Haha! This is the quicker route.... But, not always... If you get caught by the barge you can plan on a 30 minute wait.... But you save about 20 miles if you don't get caught.... haha!! I just happened to have the camera and I didn't have much else to do.... Haha Thanks, Kevin!! ;-)
They call this a Barge... The tow boat is the Boat that pushes the Barges... They have 2 twin screws - diesel motors - turn the props... Happy Thanksgiving to you, Chris!! ;-)
It is usually a 30 minute wait.... There are bridges to the North and South (about 20 miles) This is shorter but not always quicker....They haul all kinds of things... Coal and Grains are the most popular .... Lucy Lu says .... Hi!!!
Cool dog Bill :-) I just uploaded a video of our dogs yesterday, they are rescues too :-) This is great, thank you for sharing :-) Tolls here in the Bay Area are $5:00 When I make deliveries there our co. provides a device called FASTRAK where it signals to let us through without having to stop and pay :-) Have a great weekend Bill :-) ROCK ON!!!!!!!
I have seen the fast track toll payers... This bridge doesn't have that..... Yet... I will be over to check out your video my friend!! Thank you for watching!! ;-)
Yep!! I smoked 2 - 12LBS Turkeys and had a large Ham... We had relatives from all over converge on us... We had so much fun.... How about you? How was your Thanksgiving?
I just saw this bridge in another video recently. Very unique bridge for sure. I see the bridge is owned by BNSF so at least it isn't the toll isn't going in the pockets of our corrupt politicians! :) -Jen

Bill, thanks for the fascinating look at the Ft. Madison bridge and the big barge! What an impressive structure!! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thanks, John!! ;-)

I too have been on that Bridge... It has or held a record too.... The longest bridge or something like that.... Thanks for watching, Magnum!! ;-)
That barge was fricking huge! Thanks for sharing Bill. -ATB Adam
Thanks, Adam.... ;-)
That bridge is awesome Bill...Thanks for sharing it...
Thanks, Mike!! ;-)
That's pretty neat to see the old toll bridges like that..still in service.👊😎..
Hi Lucy Lue. Waiting on the barge. Cool bridge, I like the way it swings instead of raises.
Thanks, This is a shorter way... But, not always quicker!!!! ;-)

That was cool. I always liked watching those barges when I went to visit my cousins in Hannibal. Thanks for sharing!!
Yep, Hannibal is about two hours to the South of me!! Thanks, Lee!!
Neat bridge Bill! Pretty cool its that old and still operational. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you my friend!!! There is a free bridge 20 miles to the North or 20 miles to the South.... so many times the delay waiting for the barge is the same as the drive time to go around .... This is shorter... But, Not always quicker!!! ;-)
