  • This is our first video after buying a Mercedes Vario 614D mini coach. Follow our progression as we convert her into our little home on wheels. In this video we are trying to get the underside of her sorted so we have a good solid foundation to start building on. This has taken about 6 weeks so far trying to fit in as much time as we can around full time jobs. Hope you enjoy!!!

    Déjà-vu, I've been trough this process for more than 5000 hours. I feel for you😉. Hopefully it would be finished this year( as already I am). It's 609 from 89' and you could imagine that rocket start with 90 PS😆. Heated gas(100l), fuel(135l), grey(90l) and black(140l) water tanks(remote controlled valves).Fresh water tank 160l. Shower cabin with porcelain toilet and "mill thing"☺.Electric operated bed ( 205×160 cm.) and winch for motorcycle in his garage. Also self retractable solar panels(650W) frame. Honda generator( EU 2200) with remote start and air compressor(10l) are fixed on board. Also 3,5 Kg washing machine with dryer. Air condition (Truma)and 2 heating systems, gas+hot water boiler 10l,Truma ( 4Kw) and diesel ( Eberspächer ) also 4 Kw as back up. Engine cooling system is also connected with "Alde" heat exchanger and radiators within cabin. Battery capacity is 440 Ah, still AGM, but why to change to lithium while they still good functioning?
    Almost everything is remotely controlled via smartphone. So, I think this was enough for showing off😉😂 and if you need any information, I would be glad to response. Attention- my English has some Tarzan level...☺✌
    Big thumbs and be successful !

      Fully aware this is an epic project. In one way slightly envious that you are at the end already and can really enjoy the end result. In another way we are super excited for the process. And WOW how did you get all that in to one vehicle haha. I have just seen your video. Would love to see more.

      @@bohemiastardust7409 dear Trio Phantasticus😉, I had for almost 30 years dream of owning and driving MX 5. But I also have 195 cm against it. Then I discovered TH-cam and Origami instructions...😂
      I am a little bit concerned about amount of glass in your Vario. Do you plan to weld some of windows opening or cover them with isolation? I've made floor as sandwich construction. 1 peace 18mm plywood with 47mm insulation ( down under) and 3 mm pvc as protection. Exhaust has been extended for 120 cm and that gave me enough place for heated diesel and gray water tank. Both are custom made with pipe coming through. Heat is coming from Truma heater/boiler through the floor, passing both tanks and finally, after another pass trough the floor, pour out in pedestal under the table and sitting bank. Table is retractable and offers bed for the third person. There is link if you have interest for washing machine. With Truma I have always 40° or 60°c. water on board so the amount of energy is very low( no electrical water heating needed). For the dryer function I can use generator or (later ) lithium battery. Isolation (most important thing ) is made with Armaflex min. 40 max.80mm. with vapour barrier. Therefore I didn't needed acoustic insulating mat. But the whole floor in the drivers cabin has 3 mm layer of thermoplastic acoustic mat applied with heat gun. Please observe not to have ANY metal contact between inner space and shell to avoid "cold bridge" and water condensation. I have only photos ( still Galaxy S4😂) but there is possibility for me to become very progressive soon buying my first Action camera"😏😂. But now is winter and there is some strange slowdown in my bones😆.
      Take care of you an let's hope that we would have some possibility for realisation our wishes in this 2021. 👍✌Robert

    Hi from Germany, looks great what you are doing. I will start a similar Vario project next week and that's why I'm searching for videos like yours. Very helpful in particular your fight with corrosion and rust. I will have the same challenge in front of me, I guess it will take min 1 year before my Vario will be a camper van. One short comment, the API GL-4 lubricant you filled into the rear axle (differential) is definitely wrong. That's a transmission oil for gearboxes but not for axles. The axle oil to be filled in should meet the Mercedes Benz spec 235.0 which is usually a GL-5 oil (but it's not the same, look for MB 235.0!! or even better quality MB 235.8). GL-4 oils doesn't provide the right level of anti wear protection required given the extremely high pressures in the differential. Would be a shame if the differential takes damage after all the work. Good luck and succes for your project!

    I may be wrong, but should you have put the wheel arches in first??. It looks like your floor may come in contact with your wheels as more weight is added, also when you go over bumps in the road. Just a thought.... Keep up the great work. Wish I had the knowhow. Happy New Year too

    • @dougruby5223
      @dougruby5223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andrev
      You are totally right. The floor was temporarily fitted just to make it easier to move around inside. We still need to get some welding done on the lower skirts which should be easier with the floor up. We will then cut out the arches to prevent and fouling. Good shout though. Always open for suggestions 👍

    Hi we are in the process of buying a Mercedes planting beaver, are you confident the DVLa will sign this off as a motor home? Is this a 7.5tonne? I’m panicking we’ve made a bad decision as there is such a short list of vehicles you can convert in the dvla website and the one we’ve bought is classed as a mini coach, despite only actually having 9 usable seats. It’s a 33 seater at first registration. I enjoyed watching your video and look forward to the progress 😃

The next part we need to get done is the welding which we are trying to get someone to do for us as we don't have the skill set to do it well. Fingers crossed in the next couple of weeks.

      Hi Gary
      We got all the brakes from a great local Company called BTR Brakes based in Worthing West Sussex. They did us a great deal in all the parts and were super knowledgeable and helpful. We still need to cut out the floor for when we fit the fibre glass arches. The floor is just loose laid for now to make wiring inside a little easier 👍

      Hi Martin.
      Thanks for the comment. I wish I had an answer for you..... Should they??? EEEEK! I'm sure you are right. Do you mean in a tongue and grove kinda way??? Luckily they are only loose laid and won't be secure until all of the welding is done. I'm interested in how yours are done. I've never done anything like this before so really appreciate any little pointers like this!!! Thank you.

    • @martinl6867
      @martinl6867 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bohemiastardust7409 Originally it's done like this: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbet
      And when I replaced my floor I've done it the same way again. The panels were not glued together by the way, but it probably doesn't hurt glueing them.
      There will be a lot of metal shavings from the drilling between the frame and the panels. Therefore I've removed the panels once again, cleaned and painted everything and then finally screwed the panels down.
