My headset has a microphone, whenever i plug in the headset, the sound comes through the headset but the microphone isn't working, also whenever i go to sound settings the output device doesn't show my headset it only has 'Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio), same goes for my microphone, i only see 'Microphone (Realtek(R) Audio).
If your headset only has one jack like the one I use for Xbox you have to chose between sound or mic. I joined the party on the Xbox app on my phone but then found some old headphones I used for 360 and with 2 jacks and a usb that worked fine first time

My problem was mine doesnt recognize my heaphone nor microphone and it only shows the default in sound settings, Heres how i fixed it: I opened Control Panel > Realtek HD Audio manager > Device Advanced Settings > Multi- Stream Mode, then unplug and unplug your jack, and it should be detecting your mic! you can also go to Sound from control panel then you can now see the mic from your headset.
My wireless headset has a microphone I can attach and de-attach whenever I feel, but when using it as input it doesn't work on PC as it doesn't seem to register my speaking. Other platforms such as Xbox works fine tho.

Hi I am hoping very much that you can please provide me with some answers. I have Windows 10, and Audacity programme. I have BM-100FX USB microphone plugged in for Recording and I have a Playback Headphone (also has a mic) For days and hours I have tried to go through all the troubleshooting options, changed all the Settings, Apps, Updated Driver etc etc. What I now notice is that when I try to go into Microphone Set Up Wizard, (To set up microphone) it will not "Configure" to the usb device mic.. When I try to change it to the microphone and press configure, it does not Stay on, it goes back to the headphones. (Which is not what I want to Record on) Thanks for reading into this issue.

If you have a rip off or a cheap headset microphone it's most likely you only have Realtek in audio settings, pick the Realtek one that's just gonna automatically use your headset microphone
