I saw Bubba Ho Tep for the first time about six months ago!!! I didn't really know whether to laugh, cry, or to be, as I usually am, confused. Loved it tho!
Yes I do know who he is. We met Don, Angus and Reggie at the Horrorfi Convention in the late 1990's at Hunt Valley in MD. I even bought Reggie 's CD. And all three were a pleasure to be with.
Gotta admit that I was unfamiliar with the _name_ Don Coscartelli, but yeah I watched _Beastmaster_ about a hundred times on HBO (mostly for Tanya Roberts.) And I loved _Bubba Ho-Tep!_ What a delightfully off-beat film! Thanks for connecting the dots, Dave!
I LOVED Beastmaster💖💖 As a young teenage girl, I had stars in my eyes for Marc Singer 🤩 the others I didn't see, but I'll get right on it! You've never steered me wrong, Dave! Thanks for another great video
I watched Phantasm at my neighbor’s house when it came out when we were kids. It was definitely different. I like those movies when it seems like no one is around to help.
I wanted to see Phantasm so bad! All the older kids were talking about it. I finally got to see it babysitting for a friend. Yep, made those kids go to bed early and watched it! Ya! I was sorry I did. 🤣 it freaked me out bad.
I pride myself on knowing obscure midnight, cult, and B-movies, but I've never heard of Kenny and Company. I'm going to have to find it at my video store.
I honestly have never heard of this director but was definitely familiar with Beastmaster and the Phantasm films. I will certainly check out some of the other films you mentioned. Thanks again Dave!
Great vid again Dave ..I'm a huge horror fan..and when I was a teenager Phantasm just freaked me out ..it was a wild ride ..like a story within a story..and the tall man was a great villian...Everytime I was in a cemetery ..I thought about the most crazy funeral director I ever seen...I liked beastmaster but boy was it over played on cable ..like u mentioned..I have seen the others but those are my 2 favorites..thanks for the cool memories Dave!!!
Synchronicity! My 29 yr old son came over for a visit today and we were talking about Beastmaster Bubba Ho Tep is one of my all time favorite movies I haven't seen Dons' other work but I will def be checking them out Thanks for this tribute Dave You rock 😃 👍
When watching Beastmaster in the theater, my mother dragged my sister and I out of the theater when the topless scene played. I still haven't seen it since.
thanks to my Old Man liking Phantasm, i knew my butt was in deep do-do, when he would yell, "BOOOOY"! like Kenny & Co, LOVE Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep and Beast Master is my 2nd all time fav.
I watched Beastmaster for the first time last year and I was impressed. It's a lot better than I thought it would be. I haven't seen the second one yet. I haven't heard good things about it. But the original was good enough to spawn a TV series.
Hey Dave! Ive seen all the coscarelli films even kenny and co and i love them all! However i had not heard of the Noah's ark film so I'm now watching it!lol It has a kind of leonard nimoy in search of feel that i am enjoying! Have a great sunday!
I bought the Anchor Bay special edition of Beastmaster in early 2000 and really enjoys the docu with Coscarelli..i saw it on tv in the 80s and hv fond attachment to the character of Dar and his 2 tiny pals.🤗
When I got Bubba Ho-Tep, I listened to the commentary by "Elvis," and he kept referring to "Don Costareezzi" and proclaimed he never understood the movie even as he watched it! The movie was great -- but that commentary made it a classic!
_Phantasm_ and _Beastmaster_ are the only two I saw. _Beastmaster_ sucked, but _Phantasm_ was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Also, Bruce Campbell is awesome, but I hate his movies.
Oh, I DO remember Phantasm! ... And the shocked reaction of everyone at the theatre. Not too long ago I introduced my nieces' boyfriend to it when he actually made a snide remark about our generation not knowing what scary movies were. He has since apologized and swore he would NEVER come over for a movie night without knowing the movie we're going to be watching. As an aside, I'm planning on Dracula: Dead and Loving It for our next "Horror" movie. I can't wait to see his reaction.
Growing up my house was just behind a drive-in theatre MY friends and I would sit on my roof and watch movies for free we all had our small AM radios tuned in to also listen. This time I was by myself watching Phantasm. Not a good idea. !
Bruce Campbell also co-starred in a show on the USA network called Burn Notice which I thought was a pretty good show. Fun fact: Paul Giamatti's farther was Bart Giamatti who use to be the commissioner of Major League Baseball.
I am doing a retrospective to watch movies I never gave a chance. "Phantasm" blew my mind! I didn't find it scary to be honest and I thought the efforts to justify its extreme plot were rediculous. However none of that is bad, it all works in favor of "Phantasm." I was yelling at the screen which I rarely do. I will definitely be checking out more of this guy's movies.
"Bubba Ho Tep" is a really charming film and provided a great role for Bruce Campbell. Only sorry the proposed sequel "Elvis Vs. The She-vampires" never happened.
Beastmaster was the 1st movie that I saw at the Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA. My father took me and I fell in love with Mark Singer's (I think that's his name) ferrets--ha ha!!!
I absolutely loved "John Dies at The End". Last Christmas, my son got me the book of the sequel, "This Book Is Full of Spiders" , and it was great too. Check it out if you haven't already.
I caught Phantasm on HBO as a grade schooler (in the days before everyone had VCRs)...i remember trying to tell other kids at school about it, but only one other kid in class knew about it...we became best friends at the time due to our shared love of horror films ...for some reason HBO didnt replay it very often, so catching it wasn't easy for a school kid, since they only showed it a few times very late at night
So cool to see he has such a successfull family life also, frequently collaborating w his costume designer wife and their daughter an award winning vegan chef and a ‘top 30 under 30’ by Forbes en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloe_Coscarelli A life well done indeed Don👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Another scary film from around that time is Salem’s Lot. It’s not a DC film but it’s one of my favorite horror movies ever. Just thought I’d mention it if anyone is interested.
Great video Dave loved the beast master lol I can't see you sneaking in a movie PHANTASM was one of the last movies I saw at the drive in before its demise
I think the movie you were referring to during the Phantasm part was "The Last Flight of Noah's Ark", a Disney movie co-starring Genevieve Bujold. Just a thought, as "In Search of... Noah's Ark" was an episode of the Leonard Nimoy series "In Search Of...".
i also love the guy as well Dave, i do own Beastmaster on dvd i had borrowed it a long time ago from a friend than he went and died on me he had gotten apparently very sick. this was before the pandemic though. oddly i still haven't watched it yet i dunno why? but i have to laugh i just watched Phantasm 1 and 2 recently well more so i listened to them on blu-ray. cause i have the first 2 on blu-ray. my favorite one actually is the 3rd one my guess it's cause i saw that one 1st. i still need to gets the 3rd and 4th film blu-ray though. the answer is check out his IMDB page well the answer is uh NO he didn't anything after the 1st Phantasm, apparently when he was i think Filming Survivor Quest ? i think he said? is when he knew when the 2nd one was gonna start cause he for years had no desire to even do a sequel apparently. i haven't watched all the 5th one yet but i do have that on blu-ray actually. one of the funniest things that Bruce Campbell said was during in one of the Audio Commentary's for the 1st Evil Dead film was he apologized on his bad acting as he loves the film but he thinks he could have given a better performance and well he's right but that was his first film other all he did before that were just the shorts that Sam Raimi had shot in College.
The first movie I remember was "Challenge to Be Free", a G rated version of the movie "Death Hunt" with Bronson and Marvin! Still favorite B movies: Gymkata and Strange Brew. Each hilarious for different reasons.
I wanted to like Phantasm but I just did not find it scary. I found it slow moving. Sorry 😐 but Beastmaster - yes, I enjoyed it. I'll watch the other movies soon
Never saw Phantasm and to this day I have no interest. However, I had that experience of seeing a movie I shouldn’t have (Poltergeist)...and my parents couldn’t figure out for the life of them why I was scared to death of sleeping near the closet. Loved Bubba Hotep!
@Dave Sunstrom, You mention Evil Dead 2, and Army of darkness (aka "Evil Dead 3") but you TOTALLY left out Evil dead (the original). You need to see it to understand ED2.
In the 80s, when I was in high school, I remember seeing *Marc Singer* in a performance of *The Taming of the Shrew.* Our English teacher rolled in one of those TVs with the VCR, and I gotta say, I never forgot it. Perhaps it was my age, but it always seemed to be one of the best performances. Had our whole class laughing. I looked for it on TH-cam every few years. Just now found some clips were posted 3 years ago: th-cam.com/video/RdqOHvcD-VU/w-d-xo.html
I loved the Beastmaster. Marc Singer was perfect for the roll and Tanya Roberts was a knock out. The sequel wasn't as good because it was a direct to video release. Marc Singer was in the Beastmaster series but he didn't play his original character. So, I guess that's why I didn't watch it.
phantasm 1-4 are the best great acting and writing part 5 .????.. it was ok but could have been way better would like to see a phantasm 6 in the future .now for kenney and company this needs to be re-released on dvd or bluray this is a classic amazon sellers want anywhere from $100.00 to $ 500.00 dollars for it you have to be crazy to pay that .

The best part of Beastmaster (Other then Tanya Roberts of course) is Rip Torn chewing the scenery like a possessed pit bull
Yessir! Rip Torn was great!
LOL!!!
Oh wow. My brother and I watched about every showing of Beastmaster on HBO. We loved that thing.
I absolutely love The Beastmaster. I was too young o watch it in a theatre. I believe my grandparents recorded it off HBO.
I LOVED Beastmaster💖💖 As a young teenage girl, I had stars in my eyes for Marc Singer 🤩 the others I didn't see, but I'll get right on it! You've never steered me wrong, Dave! Thanks for another great video
Phantasm is one of my favorite franchises. Such a fun and campy series.
I watched Phantasm at my neighbor’s house when it came out when we were kids. It was definitely different. I like those movies when it seems like no one is around to help.
Yep...and no one really seems to understand the danger that is all around!
I got to see Beastmaster in a double feature with Rocky III in the Theatres back in the 80s, Really enjoyed it!
I wanted to see Phantasm so bad! All the older kids were talking about it. I finally got to see it babysitting for a friend. Yep, made those kids go to bed early and watched it! Ya! I was sorry I did. 🤣 it freaked me out bad.
At your suggestion, I watched Beastmaster again recently. It was still great.
I pride myself on knowing obscure midnight, cult, and B-movies, but I've never heard of Kenny and Company. I'm going to have to find it at my video store.
Good luck!
Your community still has video stores? I haven't seen one in years!!!
I love Don Coscarelli's films, particularly the Phantasm movies.
Also Brisco County Jr. With Bruce Campbell.
I have only seen Beastmaster. I have some catching up to do.
The Beast master and the clash of the titans were my favorite movies from the 80's
I liked them both. But...I loved "The Beastmaster"!
I honestly have never heard of this director but was definitely familiar with Beastmaster and the Phantasm films. I will certainly check out some of the other films you mentioned. Thanks again Dave!
I hope you enjoy them as I much as I have, William!

I must have watched The Beastmaster 100 times in HBO in middle school, and not just for TR skinny dipping.

The Beastmaster is such a great movie! It's pretty high on my all-time fave list as well.
I watched Beastmaster for the first time last year and I was impressed. It's a lot better than I thought it would be. I haven't seen the second one yet. I haven't heard good things about it. But the original was good enough to spawn a TV series.
Out of the 5 movies I only saw 'Phantasm' and Bruce Campbell 'Evil Dead' movies. 🎥 🎬 👍
Those are fine movies to have watched, Clinton!
Phantasm was the 1st movie I got to drive to in my dad's 1966 mustang and my 1st date I own it on laser disc VHS and DVD I still love it
I have the second Phantasm. I absolutely love The Beastmaster.
The thing that bugs me about the 2nd Phantasm is that Universal demanded that Coscarelli use a different actor as Michael!
I didn't know that.
Beast master was great and had a major Dave babe in it, Phantasm had the car, Bubba Ho Tep was great. Didn't see the other two.
Definitely check out "John Dies at the End" if you get a chance.
Beastmaster had JJ Evans Dad in this with a ponytail and staff and a young apprentice..

Interesting fact about the search for Noah's Ark, is that the guy who directed it, also directed Silent Night, Deadly Night! Yes, it's true!
Coscarelli definitely walks his own path. Hopefully we will see more from him soon.
If Paul Giamatti is in it it can't be bad.
It's a small role for Giamatti BUT he's great in it.
Yeah I like him☺
I bought the Anchor Bay special edition of Beastmaster in early 2000 and really enjoys the docu with Coscarelli..i saw it on tv in the 80s and hv fond attachment to the character of Dar and his 2 tiny pals.🤗

DC is a genius. I have all of these films, but Phantasm will always be my favorite.
Don also made a short film in 2005 called, “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road” that introduced a great character, Moonface!!
Omg.... I caught Bubba Hotep LATE one night while 1/2 asleep, totally forgot about it until I saw your vid... Ty for reminding me of it 😊.
Great video, Dave. I completely agree with you about Coscarelli. Phantasm is just brilliant. And I think Ravager isn't all that bad.

I don't normally pay much attention to who directs movies. Beastmaster is my favorite of this list. I have always been a fan of Marc Singer.
Being an animal lover having quite a few exotics in my life. Now have a pearl colored Northern Red fox. But I loved the Beast Master
