I wonder if it's possible to hide the recurring option that's built into the task module, and then build out your own functionality using conditional layouts. Starting with a checkbox that makes the task recurring, and then shows fields for you to configure the recurrence frequency and timing. That way any task could be set to recurring, as opposed to having to preconfigure certain types of tasks to be set along with a schedule. I do think one nuance though is whether you want to create the next task record when the original task due date is reached, or only after the original task is closed.

What you can do around this issue is to create your own tasks module with your own rules. This way you build your own functionality
