    Thank you, Daniel. You really nailed it for me. You keep your word. A true man of integrity, in my opinion. I was the one that asked the question.

      I will definitely be there and most likely have some artwork with me. If I do, I'll bring the portrait. Looking forward to meeting you.

    I'm new to leather work. Thanks for the helpful video. How do I know how much to skive off?

    Is there a video about the different types of skivers? e.g. a knife, a french skiver or the skiver used in the video?

    Can you demonstrate skiving the middle of a project (like your Gandalf)? I can’t picture how it would work without coming from an edge.

    Wouldn't skiving be easier on damp leather, on a hard surface like your tooling stone, or glass?

      Depending on how wet the leather is, it can get too 'mushy', for lack of a better term. If that happens, it doesn't really cut so much as squelch around and make the skiving sloppy. The minimal amount of skiving I've done has always been on dry leather, and I've never had a problem. Changing out the blade when needed helps as well.

      I would say always skive dry and the trick is to strop your knife blade so it is more than shave sharp. I’m afraid I don’t hold with the safety skivers as the blades dull almost instantly

      OLD Leather Smith here, great job Daniel. I still prefer a ROUND KNIFE although I do have the skiving machine though it's not used much.
      I understand you will be @ the Waco show I would like 2 meet you & show you that I match your LEATHER PICTURE.

      I mostly work with veg tan . Wetting the leather seems to work better for me . I use either a safety skiver or a Japanese skiving knife .

    I had a skiver like that. It wouldn't remove 1000th of an inch of leather when it was brand new. It ended up wadded up on the floor. Then i bought a good one.

      Use scrap to practice it’s an excellent way to learn.

    I SEE WEAVER LEATHER SUPPLY SELLS SKIVERS AND THATS WHAT YOUR VIDEO IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH - WEAVER LEATHER SUPPLY SALES, now, would skidding the leather thinly weaken the leather to the point it may rip, tear ??

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you go too thin, there is always a chance of that but usually your just taking a few layers off to then fold over and attach or stitch to another piece so it shouldn't be a problem.
