  • O-scalers have experienced derailments where curved tracks are on an incline. This video is my attempt at correcting that issue without making the scene look unrealistic.

    Mikey Mike, so glad to see you are now allowing comments on your channel. Love your layout and camera work. Probably the best way to build a ramp is with with one half inch plywood and a jig saw. You can use the track itself as a templet and the track can be screwed down to the plywood to keep it level. The ramp can be supported with whatever you want but I would just cut various lengths of 2X4 spaced a foot or so apart.
    Good luck and Happy New Year. Bill.

      Thanks for the advice. I don’t have a jigsaw or any experience with working with wood. But I may talk to some ppl at Home Depot and see if they are willing to cut a piece for me that will fit on my layout.

    Hey Mike, l agree with Soundman, I would go with thin plywood and 1/2” wood spaced apart. Layout looks good, i like the tunnel through the wall, I did the same on my layout. 👍😊

    It's a good idea to upload videos of your layout as you add to it because you can go back and see what you did over time. Sorta gives you a log of progress.

    Hey Mr Soldier, I just watched your video on the curve problem and wanted to thank you kindly for sharing this. I am in my 70s and just started my collection of Lionel trains. I have thought I would like to have a AMTRAK running faster than other trains and have a banked curve to allow for the faster speed. You are making me rethink this. I also appreciate your candor about the Lionel speed box being hard to hear as I have poor hearing. Best regards. Arlin located in Byron Center, Michigan

    Hello Mike. I have a over and under layout. For my list of things is that where the train crossover itself needs to be 6in. Other parts do not need to be that high. I use a different type of track that flex so I can raise the high side of a curve. Using fast track ,I would take cork track bed and put under support on high side( out side rail of curve). Also remember the tighter the curve the more likely of a straight line derailment( train pulls to inside of curve). The steeper and tighter and longer the train the more it pulls to inside. You can help that pull if you use a DPU. ( engine in the back), that keeps the pull effect out the picture.
    I hope that helps, and always I am open for ideas myself.

      Thanks for the insight. I have noticed that as well. The outside of the curve definitely has to be level or higher than the inside to prevent derailing.

    I remember in the old days they would have tinplate track that would have triangular shaped eyes where the outside rail would be higher t h a n the inside rail. They made so much good stuff that was the result of a Model Railroader solving a problem he had so he came out and produce it for other people. That's how Bruce Walters got started.

    Hi there - I’m glad I’m not the only one trying to figure out the incline/decline issue with Fastrack. I also discovered the woodland scenics foam sets and think I’ll try the 2% set, but just not sure I have the space! How do the rigid fastrack pieces deal with being forced up or down the grade? - seems like there is no way for them to bend and adjust. You seem to have got it all figured out. Greetings from England. Cheers, Thomas.

      @dagoodsoldier6715  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the issue is keeping them flat. The woodland scenics didn’t work for me. Check out part two of the video (part deaux) as I found the solution was that you only incline on the straight away. When you get to a curve, maintain a 0% grade as much as possible until you come out of the curve. Also, keep in mind. Model trains can handle an incline of 3.3%. And on the decline, you can go as high as 6% if you don’t have the space to decline at a lower grade. But check out part deaux to this video.

    This may be a little off topic. you have bright circles appearing on your glasses. I suspect that your lighting needs adjustment. Just thought that I would point that out since you do a very informative video.

      Thanks. Unfortunately the only way to get rid of them is to remove my glasses. But I want to keep my glasses on so I look like I know what I’m talking about….😜😇

    An easy way to bank the outside of a curve is to get a piece of cork Road bed and put it only on the outside rail to make it bank and then you can blend it into your scenery .

  • @frankmarkovcijr5459
    @frankmarkovcijr5459 ปีที่แล้ว

    I forgot to mention in my comments that you could used HO scale cork roadbed to elevate the outside rail because you don't have to raise it up too much. In my opinion that would be the simplest and easiest way to achieve your objective

    Lionel FasTrack is the most expensive track with roadbed that there is as well as being noisy as hell. There is nothing realistic about a n Extrusion being used instead of a rail. This especially becomes apparent when they have close-ups of locomotives and you can see just how unrealistic the FastTrack rail looks. I prefer m t h RealTracs because it has a rail that looks like a rail and it is solid at least it used to be now it is a template style of sheet metal rail. I hate it when manufacturers cheap and stuff I would rather pay extra and have the quality.
