It means “the dying alone”, of someone who lives alone and dies of natural causes at home without anyone knowing.
The room happened Kodoku-shi needs special cleaning.

I loved how the one cleaner bowed his head and lit the incense before entering to pay respect to the gentleman that had passed away.
I just wondering how painful when he passed away but none care for him. I mean when he’s dying, and dying in a land of garbage..
Even though his brother said he’s careless with the family, but he kept his brother’s son graduation album, he’s not selfish, he’s just dont know how to express it.

Its really sad to know about this side of the japanese culture i always love japan so knowing about this really saddens me.. i live in the philippines where most of the times 3 generations of family live under one roof, we rarely send our older loved ones in a care house, it is in our culture to ALWAYS look after the elder member in the family.
Actually in traditional Japanese culture the family take care of the elderly, but in modern times more and more younger people abandon their culture.
@@blumenthal7528during the rapid economic growth in the 60s and 70s nuclear families became a thing , and tenements and projects popped up left and right in dense and urban areas of Tokyo. Most often these lone deaths occur in those tenements built in that era. They moved there in their 20s and 30s , started a family and became empty nesters for one reason or another. Their spouse left or died.
Nothing more irritating than some randos uttering some jibberish like "noo I love Japan and Japanese culture and can't believe they are letting it happen so sad that young Japanese people are abandoning it please be like Japanese people that I know and love!". I do this type of work in the US. It can be very tough and always incredibly sad. I've been on only a small handful of jobs where the person was found right away. Others were weeks later, whether by them taking their own life, murder, or natural causes. One man was a covid death who died in his recliner. It's one that got to me more than the rest because his house was full of family photos and there was a get well soon card on his table. He wasn't found for at least a week.
Damn, my stepfather committed suicide 2 years ago. He wasn't found for I'd say 4 days or so not really 100% on that but I always wondered who were the people the cleaned up the scene. I know it was bad, the detective who found him said he had to take a week off from what he saw. He used his 7.62 SKS rifle and shot himself in the head while laying in bed. Had his pajamas on as well also while blasting prayers on his TH-cam hooked up to speakers. He was a major alcoholic and he was trying to stop drinking. He also took pain medication so he was going through withdrawal that week as well. Eats me alive to know what he was going through that night and what he was going through. He was extremely depressed and prior to this he gave me his German Shepard. He was with my mother at my house but then he decided to go back to his place for the weekend. He asked me if I could also watch his other dog as well which I thought was odd. He gave me hints but I never realized at the time that he was depressed and had tried multiple times to kill himself.

@@Jack_Krauzers Helping people in a way they shouldn't have to help themselves is what keeps me focused and able to push through. If we don't do it the family has to and that would be a new layer of trauma none of them asked for. No way I'd ever be able to be the person removing the body though. Mad respect for those who are able to do that part of the job.
@@pilotboy217 Oh wow that must've been absolutely awful, I'm so sorry to hear that. I honestly don't think I could handle cleaning up my own family member, no matter the cause of death. All I ever want to know is the cause of death because that changes where we look and how far away because I know it'll eat me up inside if I know more than that. My first job was a woman whose son took his own life and she was an absolute WRECK when I met her. She called my boss after we were done and she was sobbing that his dad was fighting her on burial plans and she managed to choke out "I just want to bury my son." That made me realize the gravity of the services cleaning companies provide. I changed the doorknob to her son's room before we left (she bought one and didnt want to be there) and that was probably the kindest thing I did that day. It was the last thing he touched and last thing she saw before she opened his door and found him there. A lot of suicide calls we get are local. It's crazy to think that I might've passed one of them at a store or something before.
I have heard a lot about this Kodokushi and Hikikomori and the problems of suicide in Japan. Lots of loneliness in the world, lots of social isolation and broken families. Thank you for shining a light on this sensitive topic.
Here's the thing it doesn't matter where you come from. At some point in our own lives we become broken for any reason. Since we are individuals. We think differently. Some want to take their own lives. Others rather get help. It's up to you. It's your own decision. Unfortunately this society worldwide fail us in every aspect. You name it.

I don't know if it's weird to suggest this, but I suggest u go to an old home, you would have some company there. Loneliness worsens any kind of sickness and it also idnt good for health

This was sad and difficult to watch. The man who died couldn't use his hands and legs yet he lived alone with no one to help him. Of course the apartment is going to quickly become unsanitary but that wasn't the deceased's fault. Why did the brother talk badly of him when he didn't do anything to help his brother? The dead man didn't have to die alone and he shouldn't have been living alone because he couldn't take care of himself!
He should have been with family members. It's distressing and disturbing that no one seemed to care - not the family, nor friends nor neighbours.
I know that similar thing happens in other countries too......it's reprehensible and exposes parts of society that are broken. 😞
The cleaners are amazing, very respectful, careful and also efficient. That's not an easy job and they have my admiration.

Later at 24:03 his brother is surprised to find a photo album of his son's graduation and wonders why he had it. I think his dead brother did care, he just didn't know how to show it...

Yeah most of the Asia parents/ people doesn't know how to show their love. Especially guy. My own father never kissed me or hug me. But he love me and my siblings, he provide everything to us and always give good life advice to us. and we know that he really really love us. But he just doesn't show his love emotions to us.

I know of a case in India, a mother lay dead on the sofa for months just because her selfish only son who shifted to the USA at the sweat of his parents back did not bother to even call for months on end . She lay dead for six months till the neighbours called the authorities. I just can't imagine the sadness she must have been going through. May her soul rest in peace.

It's important to consider that the cause of broken relationships is mutually shared.
Probably toxic and that is why the relationship was cut off.
Very respectful & sincere cleaning team, even when faced with a grim scene. This was a very good short documentary on a topic that we often gloss over & won’t openly confront or discuss. Much thanks & much respect to these good people doing difficult jobs in such a calm & considerate way.

This sad situation happens around the world. It's one of the saddest reality and scary.
This just happened to my neighbor. I was gonna buy the house next door to me...but 4 years ago when I went to see the inside with the agent...no one answered, so nothing came of it. And just yesterday (4 years or so later) I found out he was in there for 4 years and all that was left were bones. Crazy stuff.
How could no one check up on him? Electricity bills? No friends? No stench?

I like that when they clean up, they are considerate enough of the environment to separate trash to recycle instead of throwing it all into a bag
Japanese are the most environmentally concern people in Asia and have the highest efficiency and always do things with respect and care , they are also one of the most mindful race I have ever met, I have the most respect for Japanese people

@@sebastiank9175 True, but on the dark side, most Japanese people are being forced to be perfect, that pressures them and that made most of them depressed and may lead to suicidal.
I think it may have been easy to 'demonize' his brother as being selfish so he didnt have to deal with the pain of loosing him. Your company did an excellent and repectful clean up.
The translations were a bit loose. Wagamama could mean selfish, but it's not an exact overlay. People who you would say in the west are determined, strong-willed or motivated could also be called wagamama/selfish. Often those that are outgoing but not in the "correct" way can also be called selfish. I've got a few of these guys living around me. Generally decent guys, lonely, but single and not well off. Japanese society is fairly compartmentalized so they fall between the gaping valleys and get forgotten or ignored.
A lot of people blaming and judging the family based on this short documentary when in fact we are not in their shoes and we don't know exactly what the deceased did in the past that make people isolated him. He may have the album without realizing it just by the conditiom of his house, maybe he didn't even know that it was there. We all have that one family member that we want to stay away forever and have nothing to do with them. So the moral of the story not only care about your family, but also take care of your relationship with other people if you don't want to end up alone. Only blaming the living one will not work
Actually he was disabled, couldn't use hands and legs, which may explain the messiness, he was 49y/o at time of death so perhaps we can assume he was deteriorating with age and mobility getting worse...he was struggling with daily habits/rituals - things we able bodied take for granted like preparing our food and cooking, toileting and bathing/showering, grooming etc...he probably only called the mother when he needed something because the siblings may have made him feel a certain way.
Japanese culture, is pretty big on self-determination and independence from young age to the point where Japanese don't like being burden's on others.
There is also shame factor, as Japanese culture they worry about what what other ppl think of them...he kept his nephews photo album because it meant something to him.
He needed help spiritually, emotionally, physically, financially and psychologically...everything in that house reflected someone who was really struggling in their life. It was very sad indeed.
Not everyone can just make freinds , you don't know the circumstances of people why they end up that way and its not always their fault
What got me was how eager his brother was to rent out the place for 20 or 30 thousand yen. About $170 - $228 a month US. Though they did a good job of cleaning it, the stained walls and ceiling still made it look like a crappy place to rent as is. Human pride and ego always destroys relationships in families.
This company shows such great respect to these people. It must be such hard work mentally and physically. The families must all be extremely grateful. 🙏🏼💕
What a hard work! It's beautiful the staff respect before entering a a place to clean up after someone dies in Japan they usually make a pray to the deceased person in his/her memory.
Wow, what a big job, sad job and smelly job. You are right that not everyone can do what you do. It is so nice that you try to find small tokens of pictures and other things to save for the family. This is more common in the USA than people seem to realize - and honestly it would be even more common if we didn't have as much semi-independent living as we do. I think death, family, and our culture around it has just changed so much that we've forgotten that it wasn't more than 100 years ago when a family would often prepare their loved one for burial.
i think this is happening globally sadly....look at our technological advances that constantly individualize people and separate us. very different way of living 100+ years ago

In the USA they will remove the floor or wooden floor even the wall will be broken to clean all the way inside, they do it for health safety and safety. Well done guys!
I've just watched another videos before this and yes they do remove those things, but it's a job for another company, like for example this hoarding house is a job for 2 companies, the agency contract the first company to clean up the garbage and stuffs, while the next company will be cleaning and disposing any surface contacted by fluids or something like that, they also will do sorta sterilization, well all I knew, it's an outstandingly hard job sooooo my respect for'em 🙏🙏

i think this will become more often not only in Japan but abroad too, any country. Despite I have social life, I live alone and it could be possible the my body would be discovered 3 or 5 days later, just because my son comes to stay with me.
If the deceased was indeed disabled, then it's his brother's and family's fault that he had to die alone. Nobody who can't use their hands and feet should EVER live alone without any help. I am so sorry. Zero respect to his brother. He didn't bother checking in on his disabled brother and still insulted him when he's not even here anymore. Huge respect to the cleaners!
I don't think someone with a physical disability can even create as much clutter as the poor guy lived in. There's a certain amount of agility needed to even manoeuvre around all the trash .

It's admirable that even in this situation they are separating the waste by type for proper disposal/recycling. I know in the same situation in the UK or US, it would all be sent to landfill or incinerated.

The team did a tremendous amount of work. They are amazing and I think it is a very important and respectable job to have. Even though the house was messy I could feel nothing but sadness and pity for the deceased person. I don't know how he ended up in that state, but I hope he is at peace now.

Very heartbreaking to see, it seems the person who passed had hoarding issue. It can be very troublesome when they have no help. They could been dealing with depression
in our country we dont have such term of dying alone. when a country have such term, in means that this is occuring a lot in their country. such a sad situation for a modern country
Actually all humas dying alone. When we talk about natural death, none humans accompanied another human dying and following them die at very same moment. In fact when a human's dying by a natural cause such as an irreversible sickness, they never knew even if all of their family gathered around them - they already lost their awareness follow by lost consciousness several hours before they pronounced "dying". They also will never knew how many weeks or months they spent on the ICU before they die when the medical team and the family keep fight for their life.
Everyone die alone, hun. If you want to die with your loved ones ok, go jump off the 1000 feet (ca. 305 meters) of a building with your partner.

Maybe he only contacted the mother when needed money as a must and felt so ashamed for how things were so didn't contact anyone else in the family also living like that a sign of depression and maybe mental health problems?.
As with so many Japanese documentaries, a person talks for like 30 seconds or more and there's one short phrase. This happens even on NHK and I'm left wondering what was actually said. As an experienced interpreter/translator myself, it makes me crazy.
This is me for sure they'll find my body after the cops show up to evict me from my house for lack of payment.

not gonna lie, ill probably end up like this.
My father also passed away alone in his home back in the US. He died because of heart attack, 4 days after before someone knew that his dead and that is not his neighbour nor the landlord but his co-worker, because he checkup on him after gone for 2 days on there workplace. Such terrible news for us when i received the bad news, i cannot even cry i just composed myself but deep inside me i'm broken hearted. Rest in peace to all the souls suffered a lonely death.😢

It's heartbreaking to be made aware of this. I've been to/worked in Japan numerous times...and I never knew of this. I've always respected their culture and strong family ties, some in which our family has adopted. In this day and age of fast pace, hard long work hours, technology, I can see where families are falling apart. God Bless you all for helping all those affected by this sad situation. It is painful to imagine a human life ending this way. It is respectable in which the workers endure this reality while carrying out their work with such care and respect. I can't grasp why a man who cannot use hands or walk would be left alone completely to live on his own. There must have been some support to bring food and supplies into the house, to stack up his magazines and personal hygiene...how else?

One of the best measures of a people is the way in which they treat their dead. I respect the man from the beginning who views this ritual as a show of dignity and respect.

I recently just learned about this particular Japanese culture and I felt really sad. I think communication is really important between families and the society we live in especially with us growing adults. Depression is real. :(

I've done this job very similar for 9 years. I took care of Dementia patients and have had to prepare the resident after passing away so they can be transferred to the morg/hospital I've seen it all in the unit I worked in. That work is very meaningful to me I'm glad I was able to help families with the passing of their loved ones 👪
No one bothered with him while he was alive, 20 people show up at his death because there is money to be made. This basically sums up how humans treat each other.

the worst thing that could happen is if the olderst sibling is brother.. brothers are very selfish... sisters are really like mothers very considered about the family..... i imagain our life without my old sister, it would be awful.

I do restoration services which includes cleanup and repairs to bring places back to habitable conditions. Never had to do one where somebody passed away. Hoarders are the worse but most cases when valuables and important items😊 are found we try to get them back to family. Lots of times family cannot be located and owners or managers just says keep them.

17:25 workers need better gloves and latex gloves ( certain brands ) can be layered one glove on top of another for germ protection and order 3 sizes small or medium or large.
The correct size glove will allow flexibility and dexterity.
Double or even tripple glove layers gives better protection from viruses for this type of cleaning. One single layer of a cheap nitrite or plastic glove
is not enough protection… one layer can tear and blood or other harmful bio hazard liquids could touch skin of worker and if an open cut is present could contaminate the worker.
Liquid hand sanitizer before and after
entering the bio hazard unit area would be better as well and lysol disinfectant spray would help too.
Pass these costs onto the client.

As per my understanding, he will give it to the owner of the house (since his brother is not yet paid of the rent) and to Evergreen memorial services for cleaning/collecting his brother remains.

Thats what I realized too, even if our love ones are around our deathbed still we suffer and die alone , no matter how much they would like to help ease our last moments, they watch pray lets us know they love and care but we go alone

The head of the cleaning team is a young and handsome man. Normally, such assigment should be paid handsomely. Not many cleaning company willing to take on such jobs.
