I had a very impactful experience of loss recently during my travels in Portugal, with the events that unfolded leaving an indelible mark on me.
Is loss always a bad thing? It depends on how we choose to view it, I think. Perhaps there are reasons unknown to us why we had to experience that loss, and lessons to be learned from it.
I was blown away by what this particular series of events showed me. What started as a horrible incident culminated in a completely different outlook on the world.

You are an amazing storyteller! I have watched Nathaniel for many years and I really see where he gets it. Not taking anything away from either of you. It is a beautiful family trait from what I can see that was passed down the generations.
You have a very raw, vulnerable masculine perspective that we dont often see in this world full of toxic masculinity. I am a 44F and I love seeing the world through your eyes. Keep making videos. We need them!!

Oh my goodness, what wonderful feedback. Thank you so much! Nathan has been MY inspiration, actually. Although I've always loved anything video, he was the one to spearhead this whole storytelling journey, taking it to incredible heights, and in a way, has taken me along for the ride. Could not be more grateful to have him in my life.
Thanks again for your support, and for seeing us each for who we are! 😊❤

So it wasnt passed down from generation to generation but passed up!! I love it! ❤️ Nathaniel is indeed very talented. As well as your other son, from what I understood, who does the animation in his videos.
Bless you guys and your beautiful wife as well. I loved how supportive and loving she was in the Frida Khalo video Nathaniel did. It moved me very much because I am not close to my parents at all. This bond you have is absolutely beautiful to watch.

I remember this feeling. My first day in Canada, I left my bag containing my passport, laptop, work permit, and $1500 in an Uber. I was frantic and didn't sleep at all that night. Thankfully the driver kept everything intact till I retrieved it the next day. I'm so happy you got your stuff back.

I had a similar experience in the UK. I was on a northward train, and didn't realise that I'd reached my Cheltenham stop. I rushed off the train, and only realised awhile later that I had left my bag in the overhead compartment. I ran all the way back to the train station, and I was frantic. A lovely lady from the train company calmed me down, helped me to make some calls, but warned me that it was unlikely that the bag would still be there. An hour later, she called me and broke the good news: the train attendants had managed to find my bag and were sending it back down south to me within the next few hours. I was so relieved, and I couldn't believe it. I bought a few boxes of strawberries (British strawberries are amazing) for the train staff to thank them. Unfortunately when I got back to the station, the lady had already left for home, but I was sure to leave a message with the train company (GWR) to send her my gratitude. There really are miracles in this world, but those miracles are made possible by kind strangers, otherwise known as angels.

I grew up in the Los Angeles area and recall that a friend's car was stolen right from our driveway when I was a teenager. I think that incident must have shaped my thinking because I lock my car wherever I go!! and I'm sure it prompted my immediate thought "wow, that would never happen in L.A.!!" Of course, never say never but the chances of his stuff being returned intact is pretty slim, at least where I grew up.

White-American's "Individualism" made whatever they are now, and this "individual-living culture" also impacted black people who were already going through a lot. America surely needs revolution, don't know about communist or sensible capitalism but family oriented revolution where people don't only see their family as family but others also as a part of family.

The same thing happened to me when I traveled alone in Japan, 5 years ago. I was in Tokio subway, very tired after a long and marvellous day of descoveries, when I left my bagpack on the chair, in hurry to get down. Everything was inside, including pas.and money, cards, aso. I was in tears, but people in charge were absolutely amasing, I received everything back within an hour, and it turned to be one of my happiest days in life. I kissed and thanks everyone, they mentioned Nadia Comaneci and Romania and on the moment I felt like we all were a big, warm family, helping and loving each other.

Welcome to Portugal! People tend to be very kind and helpful. I am glad you are experiencing some of the good things in my culture. I lived in Coimbra for many years and it is still one of my favourite cities. I am sure you already know this but you can quickly go to the beach from there by visiting Figueira da Foz if you want (there’s a train). I have to say that as a Portuguese living in the UK, if this happened to me in the UK, it is unlikely anyone would help in this way. That’s something I really miss about Portugal.

There is good people who will help everywhere, i believe. I lost a wallet in Paddington station, it was turned in to lost property fully intact. I think some luck is involved, that good people get there first so they can help. But it is important to believe it is possible everywhere because people are people, everywhere.

    • @Bemusedbeyondbelief
      @Bemusedbeyondbelief 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I understand why you would feel this, but there are some good people still in the UK. My husband dropped his credit card holder in our local town whilst shopping. He lost all his cards in one go and did not realise until he was home. We returned to town with no idea where to look, other than near where we parked the car. With no luck we went to the police, who said if it was handed in they would destroy it, not return it. That afternoon a wonderful man, who had found it in the street, drove the 9 miles to our home to return it. He would accept nothing for his trouble or for the fuel he had used to return it. It was a reminder to never give up hope. News of the bad things in life always travels but news of the good things not so much. Perhaps that in itself is an indicator that good is the norm and thus easy to miss, and bad is the exception because it still has the power to shock.

I came here through your son's channel (Nathaniel).
This talent follows you in the DNA, keep up the excellent work.
As a Portuguese, living in Paris, let me share a curious story. Right here, once in the subway, my wife's wallet was stolen with all the documents inside. At that moment it is obvious that a certain fury follows us. However, a few days later, a call came from Portugal saying that a lady had found this wallet, but as she was illegal in the country she was afraid to go to the police. So she decided to leave it in a café in a Portuguese community, where she knew they would do everything to deliver the wallet to the owner.
We are indeed surrounded by good people. And giving back this kind of actions will make this a much better place!

I've encountered angels too. I travelled alone from Michigan to Adelaide Australia in 2006. When I got there my friend wasn't at the airport and when I tried to call, I couldn't figure out the local phone number. I thought my phone would work and it didn't. I sat on a bench and completely surrendered, jet lagged, and alone. A woman came up to me and started talking to me and asked if I was okay. I explained the situation and she lent me her phone to call my friend who was on their way in minutes. Without her help I could have sat there for hours. Instead, within the hour I was in my way. What an angel!

I had a similar experience in the good all US of A. I got out of the car and dropped my purse in the street in Nashville. I didn’t realize it for a while and then didn’t really remember where I had dropped it as we were getting in and out of the car quite a bit. We went back to our Airbnb and a few hours later got a phone call from our pharmacy insurance program, of all people. They received a call from a taxi driver who said he had found my purse but there was no number inside to contact. He went out of his way to hunt me down, including calling the number on my prescription card. He even met me outside our condo to deliver. Everything, including all the cash was inside. We did give him all the cash. Fortunately I had blocked most of my credit cards and ATM cards instead of canceling, so I only had one or two that were new cards.

I have also always loved those little angels, but I never thought to call them that. That is the perfect name for those beautiful people who come across your life at exactly the right time. I am so glad everything worked out for you with your passport and camera bag! I love how the Universe conspires to help us in those ways. It's amazing what can happen when we're open to the world and the people around us.

I lost my wallet while shopping and didn't notice till till hours later. Next day I got a call that my wallet with everything still inside including the money and cards was turned in at the Police station.... An honest teenager had turned it in! We were cycling recently in a seaside town in Northern England, on the road I found a camera. We look through the photos and found a share letter, I rang the company but they wouldn't give us any details. There was also a photo of a Skoda car. I went to a dealer and gave them the registration and and the guys name. He was on the national data base and they called him up. The guy was overjoyed and came the next day to collect his lost camera. One of his friends said to him , "you'll get that back.. " Years ago my wife lost her wallet, it was returned and the people who found it deposited the money in the wallet at our bank, from that experience we have always tried to do the right thing. Just found your channel, subscribed.

Loved watching your vlog and it brought back a similar experience I had while visiting Portugal.. my husband and I were in a cafe in Porto getting a little breakfast before heading out of town. The cafe was busy and I was acting impatient with the woman who served us as the coffee and breakfast was taking too long. We paid the bill and rushed out of their to get on the motorway. An hour into our drive I realised I left my handbag with everything in it hanging on the back of the chair in the outdoor cafe. Like you minus the camera equipment I had passport, wallet, keys in it. We turned around to go,back to Porto not even sure where the cafe was and didn’t know the name of it. Fortunately my husband has a good sense of direction and he found it. The whole ride back I prayed it would still be there. I walked in to the cafe and up to the counter where the woman I was so impatient with handed my bag back to me. I burst into tears not only because I got the bag back but realised in that moment I’m rushing through my life for now good reason. I too tried to offer her money and she was quite insulted saying we are good people. I great lesson for me, most people are good. We spent over a month in Portugal to decide if it was the place for us to relocate to from Seattle in the end we decided it wasn’t for us mainly due to the language and the culture is so far from our own. I was born in Dublin and my husband in Turkey we now live in Ireland for the past year and have never looked back. Best decision ever . Best of everything to you and your lovely wife.

Great video! I've long been your son's subscriber. I see where he gets his talent for storytelling. I like how you are both able to say what is going on in your mind during the event. It's about awareness and vulnerability in the moment.
I've had a similar experience. I left my backpack in the bathroom at the airport in St. Louis, Missouri. Instead of the hook on the back of the door, there was a shelf above the toilet. I put my backpack on the shelf. It held all my money, laptop, my Fibromyalgia medication, etc. My suitcase was on the floor in front of my feet. I set my jacket on top of my suitcase. I grabbed my suitcase handle and wheeled it to the sink with me. Oops! I had my backpack returned in about an hour. A nice woman took it to the airport police and they called my name over the loudspeaker.

Really glad that you got your stuff back. Backpacks left on trains, specially intercidades/alfa-pendular are usually fine if you report them immediately like you did. But even in urban trains like Linha de Cascais. I left my backpack once, and they immediately called the revisor and stored it safely for me. Have also lost my wallet on a bus, and got it back from the Police Lost&Found, as someone had found it, and give it to driver. Had all my money inside too. Something like this happened to me. After spending a month traveling around Europe, my time to go home was drawing near. I made my way to the airport in London. I proceeded to go to the check in kiosk for my airline, where you have to scan your passport to get your boarding pass printed. I did that and had no issues. I then wait in line to check a bag and when I finally get to the worker to get my bagged checked, she asks me for my passport. I pull out my passport holder and my passport isn’t there. I start panicking, but the woman behind the desk calms me down and she closes her lane to help me look for it. As it would turn out, someone found it still in the check in kiosk and turned it into airport security. I was able to get it back within about 10-15 minutes of me realizing it was lost. I’m so thankful that the person who found it turned it in and that the woman who was checking bags stopped what she was doing to help me look. I can only imagine what would’ve transpired if I didn’t find it. This took place a week ago. At the start of my trip, I had just turned 18 and this was my first time traveling by myself. I was worried about not being able to go home that day, but I was also worried because if parents found out, they would’ve never let me travel alone again.

Oh my goodness! I know exactly how you felt during this entire time. I did lose my passport once as it was stolen from me during the flight probably when I was sleeping. The person next to me stole my cash and passport and I was stuck in the terminal UAE just like Tom Hanks. I was stuck there for 24 hours. It was awful! Another time, I had some of my very expensive belongings in my suitcase and I never do that. I normally have these expensive items like you have in my backpack because I am a digital nomad and I travel with hard drives, laptops, cameras like you, etc. I just wasn't thinking and I put some of these items in my large suit case that went into the luggage storage below on a bus in Costa Rica. We got off the bus and thought that the driver would hand us the luggage but he sped off! He must have forgot that we had luggage. My boyfriend started to chase the bus and I was running after my boyfriend. This man tackled my boyfriend because he thought my boyfriend robbed me (my boyfriend is Latino and looked like a local hahaha). The man was being so nice and trying to help but instead, he made the situation worse because my boyfriend now couldn't catch the bus. Well, the man offered to have my boyfriend hop on his motorcycle with him and they chased the bus. They finally caught up to the bus and got my bag back! I did give the nice Costa Rican man with the motorcycle money and he did accept. Hahahahha! You are right that there really are some nice people in the world. I was crying and I felt so sick that I had lost everything in that bag but I only had that feeling for about an hour. I feel so sorry for you that you had that feeling overnight and had to wait for the train to return! I will bet that you didn't expect to have all of your belongings back. What a huge relief! By the way, losing your passport overseas is such a pain and especially to have to get an emergency one. I watched your video wondering if you would have to go through that painful process but I'm so happy for you that you got it back!
