The main limitation of Whoopdeedoo is the lack of suitable run out at the bottom - a cat track and then a line of trees with cross traffic below. You simply cannot carry any significant amount of speed without being a hazard to yourself and/or others. This forces you to check speed the whole way down.
Photos and videos do not convey just how steep the black runs off Sugar are. They are tricky. I've always thought Boulderdash was the most difficult because it is steep and really narrow, just not as long as Whoopdeedoo. I remember how gnarly these runs were years ago before they had the ability to groom them. Actually, if you can catch Whoopdeedoo with some powder on it, it is quite easy and fun. If you catch it icy and not at all groomed then you'd better not loose your edges. It's hard to stop the fall.
@@devv__VFX it's a run they only open when they get enough real snow I don't think they have snow blowers on that run but it's at the top right of the mountain you basic just ride straight into the sunset
Yeah, honestly (and I went to App) that's one of the few times without a pretty large snowstorm that it was completely covered, Sugar must have upped their snowmaking game in the last few years.
Yeah they upgraded all the snowmaking on all the main blues and greens to modern fan snowblowers so they moved a lot of the smaller guns onto all of the blacks.
Last Monday for first time. 4 runs total. Just like everything in life, scary first run but then it becomes easy as Pie. Again with great quality and info video. Be there tomorrow.
I have sugar slalom on the upcoming Tom Terrific video but I might do it tomorrow, too, if it softens up (and it should since the forecast is like 50°)!
For people who question the legitimacy of this double black run, you need to be aware of the relative difficulties of each ski resort. When you look at all the runs Sugar Mountain has to offer, this Whoopdeedoo earns its title. After all, it is this particular ski resort you are visiting, and you pick your run based on their grading level and you ski skill.
Well it’s about as steep as an out west black diamond but it’s groomed which kinda sucks cause it makes it super easy. It’s actually so steep they need a winch on the snowcat to groom it.
Looking to get some used skis for this year so I dont have to rent. They say get a ski that goes from the ground to your nose. Any other info you can provide? Thanks!
Oh yeah I sell skis at Curated so I have convos like this daily. What I’d need to know is your age, height, weight, ability level, # of years skiing, the kind(s) of terrain you intend to ski, and your intended budget. We don’t sell used at Curated but I’m happy to point you in the right direction as far as what to seek!
Okay I’d go 158-162cm, no metal, poplar core or poplar/paulownia, width in the 80s. Icelantic Pioneer 85, Rossignol Experience 84, K2 Mindbender 85 is what I’d seek
I went down whoopdeedoo my 2nd time skiing trying to show off. I immediately fell and slid the whole way thinking I was gonna fly off the mountain 😂😂😂 never again
Not sure if it’s the camera or the amount of snow but I did this run 3 times when there wasn’t much snow. It was most definitely not a blue😂😂. Nothing compared to out West but it wasn’t an easy slope by any means.
That was a green....even in the east. These ratings are not uniform ..they are not done by some agency say the ski patrols or the PSIA...They are all rated by the resort personnel all just to up the resort mystique...Having a double black rating looks cool on the map.If you had just greens and a few blues who would pay the money they ask for lift tix....no one. It's not about east or west skiing it's about making the dollar.
It probably wouldn’t be a double black everywhere but it’s definitely not a green anywhere. If you tried to put beginners on this slope it would be complete carnage - not a single person would make it. The camera makes the slope look much shallower than it is. To me it felt pretty comparable to single blacks at Whiteface.
Better yet, if you are going to venture onto Whoopdedoo, forget the jump turns and ski the slope as it was intended. I still prefer Tom Terrific and Bolder dash myself. And on a non-crowed night You can have a really good time with all of the blue slopes, with an occasional race off the Diamonds. We always loved Hawksnest, but Sugar will always be the best NC has for Skiers. Be-safe and have fun, The mountains are looking pretty good this season. Jan 2024. It is a pure shame that the town of Seven Devils did not help and stay behind the owner of Hawksnest. I'll bet very few remember the Night Hawk session. 10 pm until 3 am.
Ahh Hawksnest! Only got to enjoy it a couple of times before they put an end to the skiing, but still have fond memories. When at Sugar, I pause in front of the old Hawksnest trail map on the wall in the lodge, and pay homage.@@randynix9805

It’s not. Go Pro effect. I’ve skied Jay, MRG, Smuggs, Sugarbush, Stowe, Killington, Pico. It’s no Paradise at MRG but it’s just really steep and icy and you can’t go fast because it ends in an abrupt cliff and 90 degree turn. That said, it’s best understood as “the toughest trail in NC” and not “equivalent to Rambo.”
@@DescentAtBest I was half joking. It's clearly very steep. The conditions in the Northeast have been very icy this year as well with the lack of quality snow.
These are all shot on weekdays? Seems like a totally manageable number of other skiers. Totally nuts/overrun on weekdays/holidays? Seem to remember a vid with loads more folks on a school day off?
Yeah I only go on weekdays. That one crowded day was a weekday but one county in Tennessee had a snow day. Weekends are insane; holidays even worse. Ya gotta think, as essentially the southernmost ski area, everyone from Florida, Georgia, SC, central NC etc. joins the fun.
If they want to call this a double black they at least need it to be ungroomed and put in some moguls. It’s a blue. I am taking into account that it’s steeper than the video. But not steep enough
That would be awesome! I think people poach the next-door trail under the lift to get that experience. But that’s a “do it once then get thrown out” kinda deal
@@DescentAtBest Yeah I’ve seen people poach that chute under the high speed 6 before but only during good snow years. Personally the trees to the left of Gunther’s are my favorite out of bounds run.
@@DescentAtBest yeah on the skiers left you can follow the road that’s half way down then drop into the trees. Exit where the big MTB jump is. Really fun trees but hard too turn in due to the wet heavy pow we get.

Yeah i think I’ve addressed this in lots of other comments but the difficulty here is due to it being a super steep sheet of ice. I’ve skied in CO, UT, AK and this is plenty difficult just because you can’t hold an edge
