- After a 25 year career split between two of the finest hosts in entertainment, Howard Stern and Jay Leno, "Stuttering John" Melendez has more than a few stories to tell (hence the need for two shows). He doesn't hold back when dishing on the pleasures & pitfalls of working for these icons in their respective fields. John goes in-depth on writer room pressures, on & off-air put-downs, stutter-inducing childhood traumas, his stand-up career, divorce, what really pisses Howard off - you just have to watch...
How come every video/audio on youtube that features Stuttering John, is filled with pages and pages of hateful comments? Take the hint John. People hate you.
When is John Melendez going to write a book??? When Howard finally kicks the bucket? I think John's book would be really interesting and honest about the inner working of the show unlike Howard and Robin's ego fest fictions.

Excellent interview. Its unfortunate that his time on Howard ended on a bad note, but the fact remains that he was a big part of Stern's best years and was a part of many classic moments.
I was in a band and opened up for John and his band. He and the others were supper nice.
I don't recall John ever doing stand up comedy at clubs while he was with Stern. Because Howard would have really critiqued him about it. You have to admire John though because he literally had nothing in the beginning. He had some stock broker friends in NY, and that's where he made alot of money.
He did them all the time. He was actually the coordinator of them. Artie, KC, Nick Dipallo used to do them all the time.
The comedians used to blast him saying he did 5 minutes and took the lions share of the money.

SJ never wrote that baba booey joke about his tooth fairy needing a wheelbarrow to Howard, which he says he used. I remember he shoehorned that joke in himself, I think during one of his bad bits he made Howard play, and Howard asked him if he is doing stand up or jokes and him laughing and saying yeah. He acts like he wrote that for Howard and Howard liked it so much he used it himself. He’s always changing history with something made up to make himself look better. You really can’t believe anything he says because 95% of the time he’s lying.

Why is John acting like he was always for gay rights? Throughout the 90's he said really really homophobic stuff on Stern, to the point where other people in the room would tell him to shut up. Maybe he didn't necessarily hate gays but he definitely did look down on them.

I love how he says how much he hated the berating and the insults. Dude, on Stern, NO ONE was more brutal, vicious and unforgiving of people than Stuttering John. I love it when total bullies see themselves as victims.

I love how John tries to make it sound like writing those dumb video jokes is equal to monologue jokes. They obviously hid John away in the entry level, dumdum part of the writing staff because he was so untalented. Also, when he says he worked with three other guys and there was a lot of editing required - no way did John do any of that editing. Would love to interview those other guys and hear how awful John was.

He’s not funny. He doesn’t even think funny. Humorous people, especially comics, can think of witty things just in regular conversation that they come up with instantly. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard him say anything that’s made me laugh, outside of his interviews where he was noting more than a meat puppet.
John had no talent but got through life relying heavily on his social skills. His charm wore out and now we're seeing what's left. If you have talent, consider yourself blessed and never stop developing it. Networking and making friends is NEVER a substitute for actual talent.
John is more known for losing friends than making them.

John’s “talent” was asking inappropriate questions to celebrities which the staff wrote and he was quite good at it. problem was he got carried away with himself and began thinking he was actually “talented”.(his music, to be kind, leaves a lot to be desired and he certainly is no announcer).
Howard was right he doesn't have talent, this is such a boring interview.

I agree on the Howard front - after talking with John I was finally able to put a finger on why Howard rubbed me the wrong after a listening to him for a couple years.

D.C...i was living in rural Va.....and they were funny....they did running skits....it was humor ..it was edgy and pushy..and you realized they had to do their homework.......he moved to New York....i didn't hear him for many years....couldn't pick him up way out in the country..but the next time i picked him up...strippers....strippers.....and denigrate women and everyone else without clever and smart humor....simply idiotic ..sophomoric...stupid and bully humor....day after day ...day after day....so i no longer enjoyed it and left him...it was no longer smart..sharp humor....it was the simplest and lowest and laziest form of humor i had ever heard,,,,,i had a back operation recently and have listened to many of the years i missed...especially the Artie years.....i know what the show is about...BUT...on a human level and we all are...Howie was exposed as a very hurtful ...power hungry....self absorbed....i was shocked to see what he had evolved into....personally i thought Artie was pathetic too....on so many levels... but again...he is a junkie....with only..a very easy form of loud bully humor....only occasionally hearing a spark of intelligence....but what HOWARD DID TO THIS MAN WHO WAS VERY SICK.....sickened me....i just think there were so many path's Howard could have chosen and still been incredibly successful......yet....he chose the lowest.....why?....what i see is being lazy...having a Hitlarian complex.....and a man that if the ball does come back around the track......if karma does live.....well....i would not like to be in his shoes..................just my opinion.........good luck be well

This is a good interview. One thing that people should take from this is to always look out for your interests. John you did the right thing to leave Stern and get that job with Leno. It always amazes me when people get angry that you are quitting and getting a better job. I have seen this on countless jobs. Employers will often retaliate against the worker. Years ago Joan Rivers got her start on Jonny Carson. She eventually got her own late night show. Carson was angry at her for it and would not speak to her again after that. Carson was also known for blacklisting people in the industry if he did not like someone. Stern has done the same thing with Opie and Anthony team. Stern tried to get them off the radio behind the scenes. Good people try to help others. It is a natural thing to do. Particularly if you are successful--you try to lend your talent and insights to others and enjoy them getting ahead.

For someone who has little talent he had a damn good run.
I listened to those shows in the past years and Howard did get abusive so John had to do what was best for himself. John was like a guest too in those last days just sat in to laugh at other people too. Howard needed to be gracious but he made it into a bit for our listening benefit. This reminds me of the Joan Rivers ban from Johnny Carson...a but absurd. Howard needs jackie and John back already.

Like alot of other Stern-related interviews, this interviewer has no idea what he's talking about. He say's he listened since '92 but doesn't know the Baba Booey story, which I feel like even people who aren't fans have heard the story of, he didn't know what Channel 9 was, and he definitely never heard of Underdog Lady. This guy literally sounds like he never heard the show or watched any of it on the E Channel, yet he's got his notebook full of questions. Howard-Poseur
