My mom made this pie for my dad’s birthday every year. My mom died on Thanksgiving day, my daddy the previous June. Tears…but good memories. Food can evoke so much..thanks, Glen.
This was a very "memory lane" video for...it brought tears and laughter. My Momma made the pie like you did for me....I love lemons and it was my pie if sick, sad or just having a bad day pie. Momma has been gone for a year now. I really needed to see this...made me realize how much I loved Momma, now it's the kids and grandkids time to make the magic lemon pie with Nanny. Thanks
I hope you are enjoying making this pie still in your Mother's memory. It's Prehaps a bit late, however she's with you always.. In memory and in your heardlt.
This is a winner at my house thanks to Glen. The kids love it, the wife loves it and it’s so simple. I watched this vid about 3 yrs ago and haven’t stopped making it.
I used a full 14oz can of condensed milk thinking it was the same size. It still set just fine. The second time I made it, I just happened to have some wild black raspberries, so I macerated them and put them on the crust before I poured in the filling. I also used a third egg white the second time I made this to have a bigger meringue. Thanks for doing this one, it’s a new house favorite quick dessert.
In the late sixties, in San Francisco, California, where I grew up, we lived just a short walk away from a Woolworths department store. They had a counter where they sold milkshakes, coffee and an assortment of slices of different pies among other things. So after or before you did your shopping, you stopped there and got a cup of coffee and a slice of pie. My mom and I always got a slice of the lemon meringue pie. The meringue was very high. I don’t remember how much it cost. But it was inexpensive. I want to say 25 cents. Loved the pie and the memory.
I have a similar memory of a local diner that sold their own homemade key lime pies and they were heavenly. The place has since switched to store bought pies along with everyone else in the area so its something i kind of miss, but this makes me want to make a key lime pie from scratch now!
The only remaining Woolworth lunch counter in the US is in Bakersfield, CA. We discovered it 2 years ago while visiting family. The building is an old Woolworths building. Other than the lunch counter, the rest is for antique booths. Of course we had to have one of their hamburgers and a shake served in the metal container! We were so impressed with the lunch counter, I had to take a full length picture of it. After we got home, we had it enlarged and it hangs at the bottom of the stairs to our basement.
We had a restaurant that only served home made pies. Each week had the usual apple and either peach apricot or cherry the third was some cream pie. Different each week.
I might be the odd one out here... But I like my fillings. I need to start baking more (just got more of a setup going recently) & I can finally insure that the pies in the household are very meringue-light!
My grandmother taught me how to make this version of Lemon Meringue when I was a child in California and would go outside and pick the lemons off our tree *wish I could still do that!* and it's always been my favourite. Thank you for posting!
@Tammie MacClellan Heupei As a Canadian, I hate you for being able to go and 'pick lemons off your tree' - I'm kidding. It's PURE jealousy because I LOVE lemon anything!
I grew up with lemons in California, and my desiderata for my adult life was "a clapboard house with a big front porch, a picket fence, and lemon trees." I got the clapboard house, a smaller front porch, a picket fence, but no lemon trees here in Montana. Apples. Raspberries. No lemons. Alas. I, too, wish I could still go outside and just pick some lemons.
I've been making this pie over 55 years and my Mother made it before I did, the only change we've made, our family doesn't like meringue, so Mom stopped making it with meringue but cooked the pie about 10 mins to cook the egg yolks, the last years, we serve the pie with whipped cream. Most family members prefer it plain. It's a delicious pie. We have always made this pie with a homemade graham cracker crust. We have a lemon tree in the yard so we always used fresh juice.
I used to make a pineapple ice box pie ....just Eagle Brand, juice of 3 lemons and a can of crushed pineapple well drained. I used a pastry crust of graham cracker crust. My favorite summer pie. No eggs in this one... and a dollop of whipped cream on top if you wish. Thanks for sharing this one.
its funny how long that name has struck around. "Ice box pies" were a special type of dessert, especially in warmer places like the south, since ice was fairly expensive at the time and so iced desserts were a special treat as opposed to the cheaper/easy fruit pies. People in warmer areas HAD to buy ice for their ice boxes and they had to be imported from farther away, increasing their cost but the ice was cheaper up north and in some areas people even had their own ice houses where they would harvest ice for free in the winter and save it into the summer but in areas without natural ice or frost it had to be imported, often from lakes in New England.

Looks delicious. I'm with Julie - Lemon Meringue Pie is my favourite, and given the choice - I'll usually pick that over many other things. Then again, if I find myself in a French Patisserie , as I have on occasion, and there's a slice of Citron tart - with, or without meringue - well, I'm not going to pass that up. It's certainly one way to brighten up a day. My issue with most versions of the lemon/citron pie/tart is that often they're not lemony enough. The ones I find here in Australia seem to have been driven past a lemon, or maybe prepared in a kitchen which had an empty bottle of lemon essence in the pantry.
Made this today with 3 eggs and a little more lemon juice. Turned out perfectly. I could even see 4 eggs working for more meringue. I used to make lemon pie making a custard from scratch, but I will do it this way from now on. So much faster and easier.

I made this pie. One advice if any particle of yolk gets in the whites eggs the meringue never gets done. Also you can caramelize the sugar and mix it with the whites when the sugar still flows for better results. Good luck and happy cooking
Good memories of lemon and coconut cream pies when I was kid. I often asked for chocolate cream, but rarely got it. Not because it was disliked, but because of needing to fix a cooked custard.

Made. Double chocolate ice cream and saved the egg whites for the pie ..total 6 eggs whites.. looks great...
Came out perfect
It's my son's Birthday today, and Lemon meringue pie is his favourite. I shall be making individual tartlets and only using half of your recipe.
Thank you for all these great recipes. 👍
My mum has made lemon cream pie for years. Last year she started making avocado pie which is similar, and damn is it good.
You can switch out lime for lemon 1 to 1 on this recipe and it's fantastic.
Well done video…must bake. ❤❤❤😊
I put the lemon zest in the pie crust also, we love lemon in our family
Love your channel!
I made this pie. One advice if any particle of yolk gets in the whites eggs the meringue never gets done. Also you can caramelize the sugar and mix it with the whites when the sugar still flows for better results. Good luck and happy cooking
I just made this!! Thanks
I keep bookmarking videos I want to try, so far did one, the Lemon Podding Cake, it was amazing.
I JUST discovered your channel!!!!
Y’all are really great. Love your style of presentation. Entertaining and informative.
I can still hear my great aunt saying "it is all in the presentation" - she used to make these.
My grandparents had a key lime tree in their front yard in Key Largo. Got a lot of good Key lime pies out of it.
i make this in a square 9 inch cake pan and serve with Cool Whip. Delicious!
Good memories of lemon and coconut cream pies when I was kid. I often asked for chocolate cream, but rarely got it. Not because it was disliked, but because of needing to fix a cooked custard.
I am a fairly new sub. I love this channel. I watch the cocktail videos because my parents were big partiers in the 50's and this all brings back memories. Also a memory popped into my head when you mentioned Saltine crust. My mom used to make a "Saltine pie" which was ground saltines, ground pecans and whipped egg whites. She might have put in coconut but I am not sure. She mixed that all up and put in it a pie plate and baked it-served it with whipped cream on top. Have you ever heard of that pie?
This is the recipe I've been looking for. Do you happen to have the recipe?
As always, love the authentic approach. Thanks, Glenn!
Hahaha classic Lemon Meringue Pie! I haven't made that since my school days.
My gran used to make an amazing lemon meringue pie when she was alive, this makes me want to make another.
OMG!!!😲 I now know that there are at least 2 of you! My brother also prefers and always had lemon meringue pie made by my mom for his birthday. Must be a Canadian thing.
My favorite pie!!! Now I want to make one. Thank you for sharing 🌞🌞🌞
I have made lemon meringue pie by mix and by scratch. Scratch was more work but definitely better.
I want to try this so bad!!! :} It looks amazingly tasty 😋
Since I'm a kid my mom makes me this pie, but with limes instead (green lemons). Much better than a key-lime pie.
Finally this was the cream pie i was looking for
My mom made this for my dad. It was his favorite dessert.
Looks great! Keep up the good work.👍🏼
So yummy
Could you make a lemon/pineapple cheese pie? My grandma from Vermont used to make it but I haven't found it anywhere.
Great job and good luck, stay safe
