Good to see this! My little Monkey tree, about the length of one 's index finger, is thriving here in California. Even though the weather out here is like a living greenhouse, with the monsoonal weather pushing up from Mexico, for I realize these ancient plants from Gondwalaland are accustomed to cool enviroments, in the late afternoon, I put them, ( I say "them, for I also have an Araucaria Angustifolia, an Araucaria Biwilldi, and several species of Sequoia on my patio) In the shade until the sun goes down. And then I enjoy the sunset, and day by day, I wake up and I observe these little plants growing. It gives me a great sense of joy to preserve and protect these living fossils.
Cool! I woke up this morning, and my brother decided to plant in the ground, an Aloe Vera plant from south west Arabia that I had purchased after a disastrous attempt at BBQ'ing several years ago. Anyhoo... This little female plant is just doing spectacular! Great minds think alike. Out for now. Wising You a Great day!
Dear Surya. I cannot guarantee that the Monkey Puzzle tree will grow in a tropical environment, as they are known to grow in a cool, volcanic environment, notably the western Andes of Chile. I am attempting to grow my Monkey Puzzle tree in the ever changing climate of southern California, and have had success up to this point. If you live in a tropical environment, I would recommend finding an Araucaria Aungustfolia, which is a very close relative of the Monkey Puzzle tree, the only major difference between the two are the slightly longer leaflets of the Araucaria Aungustifolia compared to the Monkey Puzzle tree, and its much faster rate of growth. Both species are gravely endangered, and would greatly benefit planting for future generations. I have a Cycas Cirnalis from southern India planted 26 years ago, and it is doing excellent. My advice is, provide plenty of water, mulch, azomite volcanic powder, acid loving soil, and very good drainage for the roots, for the worst enemies of these rare endangered species is root rot. A good root fungicide is highly recommended. This is my best advice. Good Luck! And happy gardening!

Steven Singh Well done on treating yourself to one of these beautiful trees Steven :-) Thanks so much for watching and sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland XXXX:-)
Hi Stephen, you can use vermiculite instead of perlite, but vermiculite tends to hold onto water a little bit more than perlite and perlite is a better choice if possible as it gives aeriation to the soil, Happy growing and thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Thursday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon ok thanks I planted my monkey in John innes no 3 as they say the drainage is good and it’s full of nutrients.im new to gardening so live and learn I guess!🤙🏻
I LOVE monkey puzzle trees! They're my absolute favorite tree. I tried growing the seeds once and I was very successful at germination but they ended up dying after a year or so. I was so sad.
JoeyMrTurbo Thanks so much for watching :-) Monkey Puzzle trees are amazing, that's such a shame that yours died after a year, I am not sure how mine will last also, as I have heard that they are difficult to keep for the first few years as they are very slow growing and will keep them in the house for the first couple of years I think, and will do an update video when they get a bit bigger too :-) Sending you tons of love for a fantastic week ahead XXXX
Hi there :-D so happy you enjoyed the video :-D I didn't expose them to cold first and planted them straight, and it worked well, some seeds benefit with a cold striation before sowing them but these are ok to sow without, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXX
Hi, I absolutely loved your video 💕 , I live in London but I'm from southern Brazil, I have Pinhao ( Monkey Puzzle Tree seeds ) as my favorite food and I can't find the Monkey Puzzle Tree seeds in London, do you know where I could find it? Thank you 😊 🙏
Hi Jheni :-D so happy you loved the video, I was lucky to find these seeds but I am not sure where you are able to buy them in UK so sorry, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
Great video ive got 5 seeds at the moment had them plated for about 3 months nothings happend yet, only on 2 of the seeds they have started going white does this mean they have rotted? Thanks
Hi Sam :-D sometimes when the seeds start to go white it can be a good sign that they are ready for germinating, the seeds can take 6 months and even longer to germinate, good luck with your seeds and thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
Hi there, I didn't chill the seeds first, but some growers prefer to chill the seeds for a couple of weeks first as it can speed up the germination rates of the seeds, but its not a necessity, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seed XXXX
Crazyforflowers Thanks so much for your lovely comment and for watching :-) I absolutely LOVE your videos, watching them makes me happy, so many beautiful flowers and you are more than welcome to ask me anything you want on cacti and succulents, I would be really happy to help :-) Sending you an abundance of love and flowers from Ireland to Sunny Florida for a wonderful day ahead XXXX
Hi there :-D its ok to use any Ph range water to feed them as these plants can tolerate a large range of Ph, I usually use rain water, but if I use tap water, I let the water sit for 24 hours before to allow any of the chemicals present to dissipate, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and have a fantastic Tuesday XXXX
Nice work, I'm surprised though it took you 8 months to germinate, if I understood well. What I do is usually keep them in the fridge for 2-3 months to undergo the so-called "stratification" and then I plant them in a warm and humid spot. They germinate in 1-2 weeks and without giving them any significant amount of light. I do have another issue though with seedlings dying out after about one year as they simply turn black from root upwards. Not sure what's causing this, so if you know how to prevent it I'd apreciate an advice.
Hi Caroline :-D these roots fairly easy but they do take a good few weeks and even months to germinate, they can take up to 6 months or more :-D I got the shirt in a Thrift store LOL! I love it and wear it all the time haha :-D thanks so much for your fantastic comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle and have a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX
Thanks back at you! I looked today but they have only been in since Jan so probably need to wait a little more! Just started gardening for the first time and have planted way to much but man what a buzz! Thanks for responding! Love and blessings! x
Hi Ted :-D I do well growing these Trees in Ireland but our Summers rarely get that hot, although last year was an exception, but usually our Summers in Ireland and UK don't reach more than 80F, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
Hi David :-D I planted the seeds in September and planted them when they were still damp, Good luck with your seeds and thanks so much for watching XXXXX
These are so unusual and beautiful trees! I'll have to see if they grow here in Arizona. I posted some new cactus videos, have a look. Thanks so much for sharing, and have a nice day.

+ZeNex74 Hi there :-) Many of my seeds took as long as 6 months to germinate, and a couple of them germinated after a year, so I am pretty sure you will have brilliant success with yours too, they ca take along time to germinate and a sunny and warm windowsill is perfect for them to encourage them to germinate faster :-) good luck with growing them and keep me updated when they germinate :-) thanks so much for watching and sending lots of love and happy growing from Ireland and have a fantastic day XXXXXX
Spikef22 Thanks so much for watching :-) I couldn't resist growing these wacky looking trees from seed :-) They aren't succulents although they do look a bit cactus like haha! in fact some of the younger trees almost resemble Saguaros in the background haha! and they are sort of spiny too LOL! Hi there, yes nearly all of them germinated, they are about 3 feet high now, thanks so much for watching and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Sunday XXXX

Hi Amar :-D its best to sow these seeds as soon as they are collected, and I sown these seeds in September and kept them in a warm and bright room by a window :-D good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for watching XXXXX
This is a great baby video! Wow, EIGHT months is a long time to wait. How often do you water them, if they aren't growing? Your patience is inspiring. I didn't know that the sprouts were so slow! These trees are often referred to as living fossils, because they are so unique and most of their close relatives have been extinct for millions of years. Take me back to Gondwana! Thanks
***** Thanks so much Bob for your fantastic comment :-) LOL! at take me back to Gondwana haha! These took sooooooo long to sprout, when I made the vid last September, I thought they would only take a few weeks, but Xmas came and went and there was still nothing haha!, I only watered them lightly every week when they were not in growth and when they finally sprouted 2 months ago I was so pleased, and soooooo cute to see them like dinky little pine trees, they have grown much bigger over the last week again since I moved them in to the conservatory, 'the living fossils' are with 'the living stones' haha! Thanks so much for watching Bob and sending you tons of love from Ireland to Tonopah for a magical evening ahead XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon so you need to sow in September and wait until. spring to see the shoots can you plant in Spring. or is it the wrong time of year? Thanks :)
So I messed up... We were told to put the seed the same way as you did, but to cover it with the soil... Its been 2 months since we did that... Have we killed all hopes?
Hi there, the good news is these seeds can take up to 6 months to germinate, I know of some growers who totally cover the seeds of these Monkey puzzles too and they will still germinate, I would leave them as they are and if you dont see any signs of germination after 4 months I would remove the seeds to check them and if necessary re plant them again, good luck with growing from seeds and thank you so much for watching XXXXX

Hi there, the Monkey puzzle tree can be hard to find for sale, and I don't know of any websites you can purchase them from but I think ebay may be the best option to try, good luck with finding them for sale, and thanks so much for watching XXXX
Hi Everyone! Does anyone know what time of a year it is better to plant monkey puzzle tree? Also, i am planing to buy seeds now, can i plant them later in the year?
+Ed Balls Hi there :-) Spring is definitely the best time to sow them and if you buy your seeds now, then it will be a great time to sow them now :-) I sowed mine in the Autumn and they did really well but Spring is always better because of the warmer temperatures and the longer days which really helps to encourage faster germination and growth :-) you can plant them later on in the year though especially if you can keep them in a warm room and better still if you can give them additional lighting with a grow box or grow lights :-) good luck with growing thesea mazing trees from seed and sending tons of love and heaps of happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic week ahead XXXXX
+Desert Plants of Avalon Thank you very much for your prompt reply. There are different types of this tree. there is Brazilian araucaria and and chilean. what is the difference between them? I also red that in south of Ireland are the most beautiful monkey puzzle trees. I wondered if you could recommend where to buy the seeds for this tree. thank you very much in advance.
Ed Balls Hi Ed :-) I am not sure about the difference between the two because I am only familiar with the ones that are here in Ireland, I was lucky enough to find the seeds from my woods here in Ireland, but I wouldn't know where you could buy them from, although I do know that they are available to buy online, but I wouldn't know of anybody I could recommend, you could try ebay though as I am sure there are some good reputable sellers online :-) Sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland XXXXX
Hi Jeff, it could be because of my climate and the difference in temperature, sunlight or the soil I use, they are about 3 feet high now, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Hi there :-D I am so sorry but I was lucky to get seeds directly from these wonderful gardens in Co. Carlow , but I am not knowledgeable on where to get them online etc, I was so lucky to find these seeds

Otra voz (versión 2). Actually, it's National Patrimony of Chile. The worst part is, foreigners won't stop smuggling them out of the country but the good thing is, they don't look half as 'drop dead, out of the world gorgeous' as the original ones from Nahuelbuta or the Araucanía. Es que ni siquiera saben que los piñones se pueden comer! Y de seguro, éstos (de contrabando) saben a mieperdapa, es decir, ni siquiera se acercan al sabor de los de mi Chilito. Saludos.

It will be fine. Last year I saw a fully grown tree outside a home near Children's hospital in Vancouver. Its on the parking lot side.
I got 3 on the go at the moment. Planted in February 2015. They are about 1/2" tall now. Nor sure whether to put outside or keep indoors for a while.
This is awesome! I used to see these trees all over the place in the Seattle area when I lived there. They're really pretty as wel as unusual!

Can you use vermiculite instead of perlite?
Hi Stephen, you can use vermiculite instead of perlite, but vermiculite tends to hold onto water a little bit more than perlite and perlite is a better choice if possible as it gives aeriation to the soil, Happy growing and thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Thursday XXXX

Great video! Did you expose these seeds to cold to help them germinate?
Hi there :-D so happy you enjoyed the video :-D I didn't expose them to cold first and planted them straight, and it worked well, some seeds benefit with a cold striation before sowing them but these are ok to sow without, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXX

Did you have to chill the seeds for a few days in the fridge before germinating?
Hi there, I didn't chill the seeds first, but some growers prefer to chill the seeds for a couple of weeks first as it can speed up the germination rates of the seeds, but its not a necessity, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seed XXXX
You are very patient!! I may bother you for your advice on Cacti and Succulents once in a while and I hope you won't mind..

Cool vid
Do I need to PH the water I feed them?
TIA

You sound too happy for one person
+kqxp LOL! thanks so much for watching XXXXXX
super merci !!!!!
Erm.... I stuck them in some soil- so do you think they will still root? Been about 3 months now. Also where did you get that shirt? Thanks
Hi Caroline :-D these roots fairly easy but they do take a good few weeks and even months to germinate, they can take up to 6 months or more :-D I got the shirt in a Thrift store LOL! The zone here in South Carolina is okay for this tree - but has anyone else ever had much luck with them - especially with our heat in summer ?

waiting 2montsh here and none have sprouted as yet. wondering if sunny windowsill is too much
+ZeNex74 Hi there :-) Many of my seeds took as long as 6 months to germinate, and a couple of them germinated after a year, so I am pretty sure you will have brilliant success with yours too, they ca take along time to germinate and a sunny and warm windowsill is perfect for them to encourage them to germinate faster :-) good luck with growing them and keep me updated when they germinate :-) thanks so much for watching and sending lots of love and happy growing from Ireland and have a fantastic day XXXXXX

The one in video is chilean. Most cold hardy of all Araucarias. There are reports surviving below -20C.
I planted monkey puzzle tree seeds December 2nd 2020, and by January 25th 2021 they are practically 5 in tall so why are yours taking so long?

Otra voz (versión 2). Actually, it's National Patrimony of Chile. The worst part is, foreigners won't stop smuggling them out of the country but the good thing is, they don't look half as 'drop dead, out of the world gorgeous' as the original ones from Nahuelbuta or the Araucanía.
