10 years ago I released an album called "Illumination", and 2022 marked the 10th anniversary of that special release. I always had it in the back of my mind that one day I would create a magical music video for my song "Etude For the Dreamer" from that album, and though I can't believe it took 10 years to finally do it, I'm really proud of the result.
I spent over a year on this video - from pre-production, set design, filming, and refining the concept and storyline. You can watch my "Behind the Scenes" video for this to learn more about that process.
I was inspired by the lockdown of the pandemic - and what I personally felt was a lot of worry, anxiety, panic, and doom. Every time I would turn on the news, it just felt like it was getting worse. I experienced my own sets of panic attacks during that, and often music was an escape for me. I would go to my piano and transport myself to fantastical worlds of color and dreams.

ETUDE FOR THE DREAMER synopsis:
With the stress of everything that has happened in the world these past few years, and is currently happening - it can leave one feeling full of anxiety. It can be hard to find light and hope. The news always seems to be bad, and I definitely personally experienced my own set of panic attacks during the past two years.
Music was an escape for me though - and I found myself escaping to fantastical worlds of color and imagination through my music and my mind.
In my new music video for "Etude For the Dreamer" (from Illumination) you see my character leave the real world and go into a land of dreams. What she finds there are not only fairy tales but alternate versions of her own reality, and in the end she finds that she has the ability to shape her own reality.
Take off the glasses and really take a look. The magic is already before you.

Jennifer's Adventures in Wonderland! Wow! It's cool!!
Fairy tales I noticed: Alice in Wonderland & Little Red Riding Hood. I’m sure the queen drinking from the goblet is another one, but it’s escaping my brain (kind of reminds me of Maleficent?) as well as lots of classic books- Peter Pan, Little Women. Did I hear some Chopin Ocean Etude going on in there as well?
Good eyes and ears! So yes, you got Alice in Wonderland (Alice Through the Looking Glass), Little Red Riding Hood, and so the golden scene with the chalices is actually King Midas. I think everyone knows that fairytale (where he makes a wish to turn anything he touches to gold but it turns into a curse as he tries to eat and drink and his chalice turns to gold), I don't think people remember it until you remind them though. There were nods to Peter Pan (the fairy character), and yes my Etude is loosely based on some of the hand arpeggios from the Chopin Etude, which is why in the NYC scene you see the Chopin Etude book (briefly), there are also 2 Chopin paintings in the scene as well.
P.S. There are more fairytales and nods in there as well that I didn't mention, but I want to see if others catch them.

Absolutely amazing! The visuals, the music, the story and the colors are awesome. The color is just perfect. With all of the chaos in our daily living, a perfectly done story, the music and visuals help someone like me with ocd and anxiety to escape for just a bit. This is so beautiful in every way!!! The amount of details you put into this and connecting all the stories is simply magical! I love how vibrant all the colors are, I think that's my favorite part. Snow white with the apple, Beauty and the Beast with the rose, Peter Pan with tinkerbell and the pixie dust, Alice in Wonderland with the mad hatter (loved the queen of hearts and the white rabbit too), Red Riding Hood in the woods, Hansel and Gretel with the breadcrumbs... I couldn't figure out the one of you on the throne though. Such lovely homage to each one. This is also the perfect song for it!! 🥰🥰🥰
Nothing makes me happier as a creator than to see that my audience is noticing all the little details I slaved over, lol. THANK YOU. The golden chalice one was "King Midas". That was a sneaky one that not very many people got, and I think people forget that they know this fairytale.

Towards the end it almost looked like you were playing scales for a short moment. I have never seen that before in a piece, but I liked it. Great job!
Thank you! They are actually called "arpeggios", basically kind of a scale but skipping a few notes and playing the 1-3-5-8 notes of the scale! ❤️🎹

My gosh... you know the production value of the audio is outstanding when the tiny speakers in my iMac Pro sound like a full-fledged Dolby theater! And the visuals... I think they're the best you've ever done and some of the best cinematography Will has done! I really feel like you're allowing yourself to be more vulnerable in your productions, and more comfortable showing us that. I love you as a fantasy character, but I also love just seeing you in a sweatshirt! Outstanding job on all fronts. And, wow, did that Tess Goodman in the credits ever make or break the whole thing! I rendered and exported SO many audio files, and downloaded them and listened to them on various devices to see how they sounded. SO much tweaking, so thanks for that.
