I got a new idea for playing the NFL all time teams. Instead of trying to play the all time players from every generation all on one team, just do an all time 70's "blank" team - an all time 80's "blank" team. I mean trying to figure out which players from a previous decade would actually succeed in the next decade is pretty hard to fathom and justify. Lynn Swann for instance was great in the 70s, but his production doesn't justify a high rating in an all time team. Same thing with Chicago Bears Hb Gale Sayers. How do you know Gale Sayers is that effective in the 80's and later? Maybe he's just a backup change of pace back in a later era. I'm thinking take a given teams best year of a given decade, and then maybe bring in the best playres of that decade to make the all time team of a given decade.
For me, my favorite team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If I was to do a best of Buccaneers in the 70's era, that's pretty easy - the 79 Bucs. There's unfortunately nothing else to do with the Bucs in the 70s! Whoever was good from 76 up to 79 is on the 79 team! But, the 80's could get a little interesting. Choose the 81 Bucs for instance, and combine with the 87 draft class, and then Paul Gruber the next year. And the all time 80's Bucs team doesn't look so bad.
