  • Getting ready to leave on vacation. Truck is a 2016 f150 with a 2.7 ecoboost. Truck, camper, and SxS length is 59 foot long. After the trip back we hit a headwind. The power is great but mpg went down to 6mpg at 60mph. We were over front and rear axle, and 3000lbs over gross.

    I double tow a lot with a diesel, But the reality of a 2.7 gas motor doing this is simply amazing. Great job to Ford and I am a chevy guy.

    14,920 was total weight as of last month the ford is gone and replaced with a ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 hemi 6.4. I have taken the Camper and new truck out camping so I would like to compare. The reason I bought the new truck is because of the weight. The 2500 handles the heavyweight much better than the ford. When I look at the power. They both handle the weight equally. In fact I like the way the eco-boost handled the weight. I wish that Ford would have put the eco-boost in the 2500. I’m happy with the ram but, I want the power the low RPM that the eco-boost provided. I very much miss the eco-boost but I am happy with the carrying capacity of the 2500. All in all I miss the ecoboost.

      A diesel is a waste of money for me. I drive my truck as a daily driver. Only use it to tow toys and Camper. Gas mileage empty a gaser is better. Also I don’t pull anywhere heavy enough to need a diesel.

    • @TurboBMRProjectLove
      @TurboBMRProjectLove 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't see a gas engine having better MPG with a comparable diesel engine. You're probably talking about a small gas engine. My 1.9L TDI VW gets 55 - 60 mpg and its in the 30's when i beat on it. Diesels are crazy efficient. I say, when you drive diesel you will never want to go back to gas until they build a good electric truck.

      You should have just found a used low mileage 2006 ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. Guaranteed to out last and out pull any 3/4 ton truck with a gas motor all day, plus you would get better fuel mileage. It's common knowledge that the old 5.9 Cummins can easily achieve more than 20+ miles per gallon. Plus you would have saved a bunch of money on initial cost. Can easily find one for less than $34k, and it would last you a lifetime if you treat her right and perform regular maintenance.

    As long as you are comfortable with how it performs then i say haul as much weight as you want. I have 2.7 and pull a 5th wheel as well, 6500lb loaded, you can feel the weight, put ait bags on mine. I wouldnt personally pull a trailer behind a trailer but thats just me, not even sure its legal in my state. But i do have to say its fun to see just how much you can haul!

      articles.latimes.com/2002/nov/22/local/me-saiz22 You do realize that just because your truck can pull something 3k over weight, does not mean you should. If you are 1lb over weight and have an accident, your insurance company can deny your claim in some states. They will already know the tow rating of your truck, they will learn (Or know) the weight of the trailer (Required to have a sticker with the weight ratings on it). They add it up, if they show you are over.......... In California, if you had an accident, and heaven forbid you killed someone, but lets say you did. You may be up on Negligent homicide or reckless endangerment. I would not want those worries.

    3300lb front 3560lbs rear and 8060lbs on the trailers. The power was good. It got 12 mpg at 60mph the 350 miles to the atv park. On the way home we had a head wind and took it up to 65 - 70 mph. On the way back it only got 6.8 mpg. As you can see I was over on all my weights. That did bother me and I could feel the weight in the suspension. At no time did I feel that it was under powered.

    Wow, all nice but you should be charged with truck abuse! I had the (2017) Ford F-150 STX with the supercab with the 2.7 turbo. I liked it so much I got another STX (2020) with more bells & whistles and the new 400 ft/lbs of torque 2.7. Towing all that is no trouble but braking that amount of mass with an aluminum bodied truck is an accident waiting to happen! I could never figure out why anyone would own a 5th wheel camper. You lose the ability to use your truck bed. In your case a standard camper would allow you to ditch the utility trailer and haul the ATV in the truck bed. Be safe!

    Yea that’s pushing it my man, I know the 2.7 is a powerful little motor (325 horses and 375 lb ft tq for this 2016 year) it’s quick and tows a load well for its weight & displacement. That engine (plus hopefully the optimum gears in the rear axle for towing) along with the 5th wheel stability will def tow that weight down the road. It’s when you need to stop when your going downhill is when your gonna have an issue. Why do you need to show people it CAN be done? Yea 325 horses and 375 tq is good for a 2.7 v6. I know people like you, trying to get by with the bare minimum. That truck will tow it for the most part, but will it tow it SAFELY on a regular basis. That’s putting a lot of other drivers out there at risk if you lost control of your truck plus that big trailer. Your prob a fan of gas trucks, I know some people who are and they won’t hear a work against them, say they can do anything you need. And I actually agree with them, they can do most anything the average person needs within reason and without pushing limits. But if you want a gas truck why not get the f250 super duty w/ the 6.2 V8? Much bigger, more powerful motor, bigger stronger framed heavier truck, trailer brake system, more suited for 5th wheel towing and most importantly it’s rated to tow well over the weight of all that you got and wouldn’t struggle NEARLY as much to stop or break on a decline or haul up mountain roads. If you are open to other trucks other than fords then the Ram 2500HD w/ the 6.4 Hemi V8 is also an excellent choice. My cousin has one, tows 5th wheel campers heavier than that without problems, along with 30+ foot boats weekly. 410 HP and I think around 430-435 lb tq, powerful gas option. (I’m not as big of a fan of the GMC/Chevy heavy duty gas options as the Ford & Dodge but they’re still much better than what your working with. If you absolutely HAVE to haul with a half ton pickup then why not get the 3.5 ecoboost? It’s top dog in half ton gas towing, or hell even the 5.0 V8 coyote is rated much higher and has much more HP. The 5.7 Hemi in the new 1500 Ram is a beast and the new trailer brake control system and adjustable rear load leveling airbag suspension will ensure you’ll never sag again even with that load. Be careful my man, always better to be over prepared than under...

    Pulling a 5th Wheel with a 1/2 ton Truck??? I wouldn't do it not with Semi Floating Axle Bearings you need Full Floating Axle Bearings like what a 3/4 ton gives you. Looks overweight to me and Justin your right any motor will pull its stopping it. High RPM's when climbing this is where the Gas Engine Performs but PPL are scared they are going to blow it up well it won't blow. Sure Diesel PPL always say get a Diesel but let me say that just because it pulls easy up Hills and with Low RPM's doesn't mean it isn't working. Inside them Cylinders it's Working and Working Hard trust me I've pulled lots of Diesel Heads with damaged Pistons and a rare one with a small hole right through the cylinder letting coolant in right along with blown Head Gaskets. Maintenance on Diesel VS Gas i picked a Gas Hemi due to the fact that they now have After Treatment Exhaust. Trying to save mileage per gallon sure on Diesels but when that DPF Filter plugs guess what your $$$ saved on fuel is down the drain..Just my Opinion "Don't Pull a 5th Wheel with 1/2 ton Semi Floating Axle bearings"!!!
