Thank You for this. My dad was on the Bunker Hill during this time . One time he talked about how he and 6 others were in a compartment for just under 6 hours before they were able to get out. He also told me how he helped to bring up the dead and how horribly burned the bodies were. It has been written that the bodies in the corridor outside of the pilot’s ready room were as high as the ships phone . My dad saw that for himself. This day effected him until the day he died. We lived in San Diego when the Bunker Hill was here. I remember being with him driving on the other side of the bay and how proud he was to have served on her . All were hero’s that day.

I've seen a photo of the bodies piled up in the corridor and literally the pile was 2/3 of the way to the ceiling. It is one of the saddest photos I've ever seen from WWII. I assume the sailors just rushed around in the smoke and en masse became overwhelmed...and then more climbed over the fallen and fell themselves.

Thank you for focusing on the USS BUNKER HILL my father was on her and didn’t talk about it until one day in my 40’s we were walking and I decided to comment on a picture of the ship engulfed in smoke and he told me about some of his experiences. I feel blessed that he shared that part of his life with me. He was 17
It’s important to keep these stories alive to honor the ones that gave so much for the rest of us.

My first boss Ivan Howell was aboard the Bunker hill working in the engine room keeping the ship running during this event. I was 17years old at the time of learning from him about the events of that day. I studied much about ww2 after his story that he told. I am now 63. Ivan has been past on for many years now but will always remain in my heart a true American hero to me. I praise Father God for all who served our great nation. I pray for those who are serving today! Thank you for the video of this one ship and it's crew. My dad also served in the navy during Korean war but spoke very little about his duty. Wore the cap with his ships name until his last breath. Man I miss them both. Ivan and my father Walter Cornman were 2 of the greatest men that walked the earth to me. See you soon dad and Ivan. Love you much! Shalom

In terms of British armored carriers, they were very unlikely to be sunk by hits above the waterline but required much more extensive repairs after being damaged.

The father of a good friend of mine from high school served on the Bunker Hill. He was in the fire direction center below decks when the kamikaze attacks took place. They were trapped in the dark for hours until damage control parties could get them out. The fear was the ship might sink with them in it. His photos of the damage were amazing and sobering. One showed a hole in the flight deck with the ocean visible below.

My father served aboard the Bunker Hill as a Pharmacists Mate 3rd class. Wounded (smoke inhalation 11 May 1945) He related many stories and experiences during his time on the ship to me. The action against the Yamato was a combined effort of no less than five Essex class carriers and four Independence Class carriers. He passed away in 2021 at 96.

I went on a ship in late 71, we tied up North Island NAS and always wondered about the old carrier tied up at the north end by herself. Finally asked someone who knew and learned it was the Bunker Hill. Having read WWII naval history before joining the Navy I knew already what the ship had endured so just being close and seeing it had meaning. Another time I saw probably 6 or so ships being towed from the mothball fleet probably to be scrapped. If I remember correctly there were a couple of cruisers and carriers.

Nice and informative video, but that Yamato was the largest battleship in the world is short selling the japanese a bit. The Yamato class was the biggest class of battleships, and three ships were ordered. The Yamato and Musashi were launched in 1940 so Yamato shared the seas with her sister ship that was just as large. The third ship was laid down but the hull converted to an aircraft carrier named Shinano. Had not the ships of the Yamato class been sunk, we would probably have seen the planned Montana class being built and launched. These would have been even longer than the Yamato class, of roughly the same displacement. Still with only 16 inch guns, but twelve in number.

Ol’ Holiday Express got a late start, but made up for it with straight up berserker like behavior. It basically set sail due west, locked the tiller, and started throwing hands.
Too bad it and the Grey Ghost (plus an escort of like 27 subs, 40 destroyers, 30 cruisers, 10 battleships as an AA screen.) weren’t put together to do a navel version of a thunder run straight to Tokyo Bay and then down along coast staying out of range of airfield.
The Ghost playing ride of the Valkyrie’s would look like a cross between Barry Sanders and Muhammad Ali juking, cutting, dodging groups of five to ten or more torpedos while using the fire (caused from taking 2-3 bombs on the chin) to create a smokescreen confusing the enemy so the ghost could pop out opposite of where she is expected sailing full steam thru the a sub’s hull she caught slipping. Meanwhile the the planes from her and Holiday Express would give Tojo a couple of Christmas presents, the first being the destruction of the task force, second be the leveling of the government and place areas, and third be the destruction of basically all the air power Japan had left. 🎉🎉The next day the New York Times would have a front page above and below the fold picture of 26 fish in the water visible from trails they leave and the ghost with her deck almost at 45 degrees while cutting between groups of torpedos too close it seems for pt boat to squeeze thru but the ghost seemingly by magic slides between them again and again. As she goes by a battleship 600 heavily armed crew in the lowered flight elevator throw lines across and secure many routes to board the battleship. Other crew on the deck rain lead on anyone visible on the battleship. Before long the jap flag goes down and a black one goes up featuring a dancing ghost with a pitchfork in one hand and the emperors heart in the other. The 16 inch guns on the newly acquired battleship start bombarding every important factory, bridge, rail yard, air strip, and just to see what happens they hit a couple destroyers and smaller ships with a six round volley of 16’s. That evenings everyone gathers in the deck of the ghost with the admiral BBQing, and kegs aplenty.

My grandfather served on the USS Skate which was the only sun to ever attack the Yamato. I have original Navy documents that talk about the engagement.

Essex Class Aircraft Carriers brought the USA to the position of having the Superior Naval Air Task Force which helped end the War in the Pacific and became the basis of the "Best" Naval Force in Modern Times. This continues to this day but is being challenged by China as you read these words. God Bless the US Navy and all Ships at Sea.

I served on bunker Hill. Me and some bad where stuck below deck thought it was the end. So we all blew each other. Everyone was a hero that day.

Um Porta Aviões excelente e heróico , Mas na minha opinião , os americanos deveriam ter reforçado a defesa dos grandes Porta Aviões, com a escolta de um Porta Aviões Jeep menor , somente equipado com caças F6F Hellcat

The saddest part is that Japan was still sending people to death then admit the war had been lost after the most lopsided defeat of any navy in human history at the battle of the philippine sea

thats honor and i have always admired learning how much honor the japanese had towards there country . as an american i cant ever imagine surrendering when another country has brought the fight to my home land. it'd be down to the very last man as far as im concerned.

British carriers had metal decks and were harder to damage.

Yes , I saw a video discussing this ,it was a trade off . Armored deck vs more plane capacity . British carriers were designed to operate close to shore , within range of enemy land based planes . Most of the European war service was under these coastal conditions

There’s no way she survived because she had explosive and fuel inside meaning she could instantly explode and sink,if it tilts then it’s a good idea to abandon since it’s too severely damaged from the attack
