What an exceptional player. He's like a one-handed player, but by choice. Like a Mormon surgeon who's opposed to blood transfusions, so he has to perform surgeries while making do without. He has to work twice as hard to get the same results as everybody else, and that's because of a personal decision. It's like Oro tying one hand behind his back so he can get enough satisfaction out of his fights. Truly the Necro Butcher of Melee.
GSFLuma Excuse me? Sorry for stating the truth with statistics. I could point out if you like which moves require L-cancelling and which do not. I could show you how impractical Sheik's wave-dash is, so to explain why there isn't much reason to use it. "Basic knowledge"? As if you know who I am? Please do not make fallacious assumptions ever again. Please do not speak until you speak factually. Please do not speak until you learn to argue properly and have a point to make. ThatIrishBloke15 I usually just practiced wavedashing before my opponent would respawn. I eventually learned wavedashing that way lol, I guess all that time added up.
+Bored “Gentleman” Philosopher I agree with the sentiment behind this, but as a general rule of thumb, the more options you have the better off you are. Even if you don't make wavedashing an integral part of your style, you're still better off knowing how to do it than not.

Toats the advanced techs that you see these players use were actually intended to be in the game. It's up to the players if they want to use them or not. Also, I don't get his how 'the way it was meant to be played' argument. Games are in their very nature, interactive, in other words, you can do what you want in them. It's one major advantage it has over TV for example. The way you are meant to play a game is however you want. You could play a game and try and complete everything, or you could just play online, or you might try and complete it as quickly as possible, or you might just try and unlock everything. Playing the game competitively is just another way of playing this game. I don't feel the need to phone nintendo asking what to do when I start up one of their games.
BuIIetBiII Well said. If Sakurai left them in the game and new about them without taking them out, it doesn't really mean they are glitches at all. The final product will determine the boundaries of the game. Its the equivalent to hating on speedrunning, even though there are different categories for glitched/glitchless, because the people playing the game are beating the game faster than it was "intended". Play the game however you want, because as long as you're having fun doing it, the developer's original intentions will have been fulfilled.
Lol, I love it when people use Borp as an example to claim that you dont need techs to win. They say this to give casuals confidence. There is a huge difference between Borp and most casuals. The reason why Borp can do this is because Borp is aware and knows the techs and knows how to counter. Borp also has good read skills. He is cut from a different cloth than most casuals, thus he can make it much farther than them. Just because he's a casual doesnt mean he's a shining example. Borp is good, at his own level, better than most casuals and maybe even small amount of pros. But sad to say this is a far Borp will make it. You can only go but so far with this. Props to Borp, but casuals, don't use Borp to inflate your own ego or use him to try to down play competitive players just because he doesn't use techs. If not, then here's some advice from the Rock. "Know your damn role." Because if you don't, always know there will always be competitive player there to show up and put you in your place.
I'm thinking the same thing. borp is in the middle ground between "pro" players and "casual" players. as a casual player, I'll admit that borp is better than me, especially with the fact that he's much better than me at reading players and countering them. I've only just started to get into smash seriously. started watching some videos and stuff and I have improved quite a bit......but still I'm not that good at reading people unless they're repetitive. still I enjoy both ends of the spectrum, the competitive side (which I'm rubbish at at the moment but getting there) and the fun side playing local multiplayer with friends and items.
danielvutran cheers man. improved my game by quite a bit in the 3 months since I last posted here XD my mains are samus, zero-suit samus, mega man and diddy kong. don't worry I don't spam projectiles or down throw to u-air with diddy ;) got quite a few good combos and stuff on the go with them all. I play similar to zucco with mega man (although not as good obviously he's brilliant). can get some online games on the go if you want. my NNID is mikeyboy17. also play MK8 online if you play that.
Without tech skills, you can still execute moves faster than any human can react to. That being said, predicting your opponent well enough can make teching completely unnecessary.
PickyMcCritical Considering the top players all use tech instead of opting out not to kind disproves that. If that was seriously the case we would see video proof of this happening. Other wise, all you have is a blank talking point.
He's just really good with reads, and framing. Good enough to make up for not using tech skills... pretty impressive if you ask me lol... I laughed my ass off when the announcer said he doesnt even know how to ledge hog.
What's that supposed to mean? It's a game, as long as you're not breaking the rules, you can play it however you like. L-cancels and wavedashes are parts of the game, so what's the harm in using them?
Vance Walton When it comes to game development and the time it takes to do so, certain decisions have to be made which can lead to "oversights". Sakurai knew that the glitches/exploitations were in the game and had to do decide whether to leave it as is or to delay the game release further to fix them (and depending on how convoluted the physics engine was, that could delay the release quite a bit). just shows how simple shiek is, with a little wave-dashing and tech skill for followup/deffesive options borp would be super good in like a couple months
Shaun Fowler Mccreight So true. I entered a tourney once, and as I pulled my pants down to play with my dick, I was disqualified. I still don't know why they disqualified me. Was my peepee to small?
metroid1117 You know... I was gonna write a reply about the 3 possible things that happened there. But I think you're right. Borp doesn't short hop so him going for that up air seems uncharacteristic of him. I seriously think he was gonna charge an up smash but missed the timing. I mean, it's either that or Borp was going for the kill with a low up air.
This guy is like the lvl 9 CPU that could lol. This is what smash players need to the best (even the casuals). This rite here is the fundamentals: spacing, reading, punishing and mind games. I imagined he played other fighting games because basic FG knowledge is this in a nutshell, and its something that carries even into this. Borp does it near perfectly. But someone stated before this is as far as you can go. The players he fights here probably didn't invest in the fundamentals and went straight for the flashy shit. But take this to apex, and he probably wouldn't even make it to brackets. Cause good players essentially should know the fundamentals AND the tech.
Posting something positive to change up these comments: I think the way Borp plays and his ability to still, on occasion, go toe to toe with some high level players shows that you do not need to use all the fanciest tech to in any one given scenario (more true with sheik than any other character probably). Ultimately not exploiting all the possibilities available in a game engine will hinder you (otherwise Borp would be a top player). But efficiency is beauty in itself, his play is ever so slightly reminiscent of Azen's playstyle (but Azen did use wd/sh/l-canceling) but obviously leagues under. tl;dr - melee is the greatest smash there ever was and probably ever will be
Jimmy Keffer see how everyone underestimate him (even the commentators) just because he has no tech skill, but his raw skill and reading opponents are beyond pro players.
Man I wish I played more melee when I had the chance so I could get better at it... Awesome video... ... Also I hate accidentally scrolling down to the comments...
I know he may not be the best player, but you have to admire his courage to play with all these people using all sorts of hacks and loopholes to beat him.
marcus petersheim "hacks" I am going to immediately assume you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Wave-dashing is a result of using the momentum caused by a directional air-dodge into the ground, thus allowing characters to snap to the platforms and ground faster. _All a part of the physics engine, no error here._ L-Cancelling has been 100% intended since 64. _All a part of the physics engine, no error here._ As for the frame-cancelling, well, intended or not, they DID program the opening frames (such as Fox's jump-out-of-reflector on the 4th animation frame), so if they really didn't want something like that to happen, they wouldn't have gone through the trouble of programming it in. _The game's engine working 100% correctly, no error here._
Holy shit man. I'm sorry if I really pissed you off by how I phrased what I said. By "hacks" I mean that to him they are using things that give them a giant advantage over him, but he is still able to best them using over all superior strategy.
marcus petersheim Oh okay, lol. But yeah, the top misconceptions are that: wave-dash/land/shine are glitches, jump-cancel shines are glitches, and some people even claim L-Cancel is a glitch lol.
Well 2 thing wrong with your "statement" 1. All of the top 8 can completely obliterate Borp (most 3-4 stock him) 2. Borp has almost psychic intuition and somehow can sidestep every incoming grab/attack on the ground
I think borp is just exceptionally good at reading players, and learned how all experienced smashers tend to react in certain situations, and uses that to his great advantage
So to help me fully understand. Borp is a casual Smash player in the competitive scene that happens to win some without being as technical as the others? All of a sudden I feel better that I'm not such a tech-y player XD
I love how Borp only sometimes chooses to edge hog, like when he knows it's COMPLETELY necessary. Other times he's like fuck that, I'm not wasting my time.
This is very late, but Borp has a youtube, called Borp, with tons of his own combo videos from friendly highlights. It's always been lesser known but it's a hidden gem. I've played pm/melee for nearly 8 years now, and there are multiple weird tactics, glitches, or interactions I've only ever seen in his videos.
...Borp is awesome but like seriously why all the hate on melee because of him getting some popularity? Glitches? Wave dashing isnt a glitch and l canceling in some form was even in smash 64. Also combos were never intended in street fighter but it evolved options for the game so really. For those of you arguing this and actually meaning it, would you actually prefer fighting games to never have evolved? Fighting games would have never gained such popularity without combo systems it wouldve been more about beat em ups. Having a high ceiling skill level is not bad at all it means there are plenty of players on your level or higher to learn from and even they might learn something from you. If you love the game enough learning should not be a problem.
It's just the way that some competitive players act to casuals. Competitive players dislike casuals for taking out the wavedashing and other tech stuff, while casuals dislike competitive players for the hate. Over all, people should just stfu and enjoy the franchise as it is.
William Grand No, Jigglypuff is easier to play. At a top level, you have to be extremely good at mindgames with sheik, otherwise, you won't make it very far.
+Connor Dailey No sheik is way easier. I've bodied good players as sheik playing the way borp does (spam ftilt) and I have 0 practice with sheik other than to prove to people how easy to play she is.
+Morgan Murphy Borp doesn't spam ftilt. It's her best set up into a kill move, and he literally hits it everytime. He's never throwing it out willy nilly
Borp is really good and all, but it kinda frustrates me... all this time learning L-cancel, wavedash, wave land... all this teching for nothing? The feels man...
it depends on if you use sheik or not. if you try this stuff with other top tiers, (maybe you could get away with it using marth, but every other top tier) you would get bopped.
well marth's aerials benefit a shit ton from l-cancelling, and his wavedash is one of the best in the game, so I'd say it's more admirable to actually practice and use that tech skill. honestly sheik is just so easy mode so it's not a great comparison to other characters.
Borp is a level 10 CPU
this. this right here lmao
no kidding
With Shiek he is level 10 but with puff he is level 20

Fun Fact: After watching this video, Sakurai went and sent Borp a lifetime supply of Saki for playing the game the way he intended.

God, Borp is such a fitting name for that guy. He's such a weirdly average looking person with a perpetually blank expression.
Its the character he created, he made himself look very expressionless and average and just does no tech, its for fun lol.

How is he even allowed to compete? Isn't being able to read your opponent's mind kind cheating or something? Telepathy is an unfair advantage.
So when is the Borp episode of the documentary coming out?
He needs to win a national tournament first.

But someone stated before this is as far as you can go. The players he fights here probably didn't invest in the fundamentals and went straight for the flashy shit. But take this to apex, and he probably wouldn't even make it to brackets. Cause good players essentially should know the fundamentals AND the tech.
Posting something positive to change up these comments:
I think the way Borp plays and his ability to still, on occasion, go toe to toe with some high level players shows that you do not need to use all the fanciest tech to in any one given scenario (more true with sheik than any other character probably).
Ultimately not exploiting all the possibilities available in a game engine will hinder you (otherwise Borp would be a top player). But efficiency is beauty in itself, his play is ever so slightly reminiscent of Azen's playstyle (but Azen did use wd/sh/l-canceling) but obviously leagues under.
tl;dr - melee is the greatest smash there ever was and probably ever will be
I feel like this song is appropriate only for a borp combo video.
I like how he doesn't use button tech skill, but mental tech skill (philosophy and psychology)
This guy is legendary in his own accords.
Fuse westballs and Borp together and 20xx will be here
wrong 20yy
69XXX
20$$
The man, the myth, the legend
He reminds me of Saitama for some reason
He's just a guy who wins tourneys for fun
Jimmy Keffer see how everyone underestimate him (even the commentators) just because he has no tech skill, but his raw skill and reading opponents are beyond pro players.
Troo
Yup,if he have tech skillz,he would be beyond the five gods
hillbert 10 IMAGINE
I have never heard this song in a long time. Now all the memories of going to TH-cam videos that had fake content are all coming back to me.
Man I wish I played more melee when I had the chance so I could get better at it... Awesome video...
... Also I hate accidentally scrolling down to the comments...
This is how I feel every time and I can't stop doing it.
I know right.
I'm going to be really controversial here, but I like that song.
_All a part of the physics engine, no error here._
L-Cancelling has been 100% intended since 64. _All a part of the physics engine, no error here._
As for the frame-cancelling, well, intended or not, they DID program the opening frames (such as Fox's jump-out-of-reflector on the 4th animation frame), so if they really didn't want something like that to happen, they wouldn't have gone through the trouble of programming it in. _The game's engine working 100% correctly, no error here._
Holy shit man. I'm sorry if I really pissed you off by how I phrased what I said. By "hacks" I mean that to him they are using things that give them a giant advantage over him, but he is still able to best them using over all superior strategy.
marcus petersheim
Oh okay, lol.
But yeah, the top misconceptions are that: wave-dash/land/shine are glitches, jump-cancel shines are glitches, and some people even claim L-Cancel is a glitch lol.
Competitive players overthink it _way_ too much.
Simple combos and timing is all you need.
but l-cancelling and wavedashing still speeds up your game, allowing faster combos and better performance from your character. which is good.
lolono
But if you really watch a lot of top tier players, advanced techs aid them completely and entirely almost with combos and timing.
all you need to place really low in a serious competition
Well 2 thing wrong with your "statement"
1. All of the top 8 can completely obliterate Borp (most 3-4 stock him)
2. Borp has almost psychic intuition and somehow can sidestep every incoming grab/attack on the ground
It's like when Batman beat the Justice league. They have all their special moves and powers but he's got the determination!
It's amazing that you don't have to have Tech Skill to be decent.
+Jack Registeel you do. Borp isn't decent
@@BuIIetBiII decent enough to not get 4 stocked by top players, Borp is legendary and is one of the *best* in the world at reading people, *stop*
Today I learned that borp's brother is pannenkoek2012...Nice
LOL 1:55 DID HE JUST FULL HOP TO LEDGE
Borp's like, "I thought I was told this game is hard."
Borp is not the hero we need, but the one we deserve.
YES! The stock TH-cam copyright music! Genius!
Borp is the level 10 CPU.
I think borp is just exceptionally good at reading players, and learned how all experienced smashers tend to react in certain situations, and uses that to his great advantage
We need more Borp.
The only moves Borp knows how to do
- F-tilt
- F-air
- Dash attack
- Needles
All the other moves are practically useless
KingSkyLord
- grab
fucking TH-cam National Anthem...
This music brought back the good 'ol 240p days.
Is it strange I still root for Green Ranger even in a Borp combo video
The legendary Borp :D
So to help me fully understand. Borp is a casual Smash player in the competitive scene that happens to win some without being as technical as the others? All of a sudden I feel better that I'm not such a tech-y player XD
I love how Borp only sometimes chooses to edge hog, like when he knows it's COMPLETELY necessary. Other times he's like fuck that, I'm not wasting my time.
See Wavedashing doesnt prove skill
its knowing your character and knowing how to read your opponent
But wavedashing is probably the easiest AT out there.
Never said it wasnt
^_^
Well you chose a bad example for your statement is what I ment :p Maybe waveshining or multishining would have been better :D
Ok i see what you mean
But you understand what i was trying to get at :P
Yeah :p
Borp is the brother of Pannenkoek2012
A guy who uses no tech skills beats players who do, yet people say he sucks? Lol
I was not ready for that song, old YT flashbacks lol
Love your vids dude. But that song is cancer
Matthew Liberson Lmao i put it in as a joke, didn't realize people hated it that much LOL
GRsmash Oh thank god haha
fits perfectly
GRsmash I liekd it
this song is badass wtf
0:24 "See? He's not even gonna grab that edge because he doesn't know how." I lost my shit
No tech skill required... because sheik is the easiest character to play in the game...
+DDeglane16 lol spacies are way harder to play than puff, you're high af.
DDeglane16 That doesnt mean its harder lol
+Morgan Murphy Borp doesn't spam ftilt. It's her best set up into a kill move, and he literally hits it everytime. He's never throwing it out willy nilly
the "gimp" on donkey kong at 2:43 was too nasty
how is borp not a god yet
I love how borp just starts charging his needles every time he knows the opponent is dead offstage trying to recover
FlyingFlygon13 i main marth though.
well marth's aerials benefit a shit ton from l-cancelling, and his wavedash is one of the best in the game, so I'd say it's more admirable to actually practice and use that tech skill. honestly sheik is just so easy mode so it's not a great comparison to other characters.
FlyingFlygon13 Thank you for raising my self esteem! Smash is all I got and still have too much to learn.
Kevin Peixes Keep practicing that tech skill, it will be worthwhile!
Truly a man that plays the game as Sakurai intended.
God damn sheik players
God damn Fox players
I main falco and my second is falcon. I just wish I was a fox main :(
Stick to Falco. I know WAY too many Fox mains.
Cacturactus Except if you live in mexico, way too many falcos and like 3 foxes if you get lucky
Welp, I started to play fox because I was more succesful in 2v2 with him. now I main him.
anyway here in quebec it's falco/sheik town
"HE'S NOT EVEN GONNA GRAB THE LEDGE because he doesn't know how"
I'm not impressed with this guy.
:o
"I lost to borp" -Everyone
"He's not even going to grab the ledge, because he doesn't know how" lmfao
"See he's not even gunna grab that edge, because he does not know how" lmao
This song is the Darude Sandstorm of 240p
