Teez, I can't remember if you did a Joy Division song yet, but New Order is the band that formed after JD broke up when their lead singer Ian Curtis died by suicide. In the beginning, NO still sounded a bit like JD, but they truly came into their own and created their own sound. I love both bands! Also, I noticed the video is a clip from a movie named Chunking Express.

Love this song! Thanks Mike for requesting and thanks Teez for reacting!
Only problem I had with the reaction was the song always gets me moving and during the chorus always swaying with my eyes shut lip-syncing it... so keeping my eyes open and focused on the reaction for this song was tooougghh lol.
This and Blue Monday are so tied into my subconscious youth music.... electronic masterpieces, this one wraps you up in the vibe, IMO.
Again, thanks for the reaction and glad you found it neat!

That's a nice memory 😊 I miss going dancing. I was never much of nightlife person but I did have a couple years in my early 20s when I went dancing here and there. We went to 80s nights. This one particular DJ would host nights where he played a lot of songs from one band. So, I went to a night for the Cure, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, Joy Division, etc. So much fun!

Whats important to remember is that without New Order a lot of modern music would be different for 4 big reasons
    1) Martin Hannett experimented a lot on Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasuers" album and the sound he created along with their stylings very much created what would become modern indie's core sound.
    2) Stephen Morris got a drum machine but it came with very basic sounds - he was the guy who painstakingly recorded all the individual drum sounds one at a time and loaded them into the machine. Those beats were then used by anyone usign drum machines for a couple of generations onward because seriously could you be bothered recording individual drum noises for a week just to do it yourself? He used to joke that every month he would get tiny royalty checks from record companies for using his stuff.
    3) They built a synthesiser from a kit but realised it couldn't talk to the drum machine and sync up so got a guy from a local university to create something that did that setting the stage for what would become modern dance music.
    4) They helped finance the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester which is really where rave/house and DJ culture boomed further accelerating the dance genres evolution.

That was an amazing fan created video. So, the song is definitely not “techno”. Yes, very electronic created, however, a very organic live and epic bass in this track from former New Order member Peter Hook (Hooky) who is one of the best Bass players there have been. This band is right there up there at the apex of electronic music pioneers alongside the likes of Kraftwerk and other early 80s synth bands such as Human League and OMD, They to this day still hold the record for the biggest selling 12” inch single of all time “Blue Monday” which I highly recommend you react to. Also, “Perfect Kiss”, “Shellshock”, “True Faith” and “Touched By The Hand Of God” all worth your time as well. You’ll then get the impact on electronic music this band had.

One of my favourite New Order tracks. New Order were almost 2 bands in one. The majority of their album tracks were more rock oriented, and their singles were more dance oriented. Obviously that’s not a hard and fast rule, and this song certainly bridged the two. They released an album of all their 12” singles called “Substance” in the mid 80s. This song was given a remix by Shep Pettibone who is a great dance music producer. But the whole album is one of the finest collections of 12” singles you could ever wish to hear. No hyperbole. As for this amazing track, New Order are a 4 piece with a drummer (although they also program some drum elements), a keyboard player (again, with some programmed elements such as the arpeggios and synth bass on this track) a bass guitarist, and a lead guitarist/singer. As for the other sounds, remember that by the 80s, synths could be programmed to pretty much sound like anything as well as create sampled sounds so you could pretty much sample any sound and play it through the keyboard. So the xylophone sound is played on a synth.
