As a kid and aspiring magician growing up in Wisconsin, Houdini was one of my boyhood heroes. We also thought at the time that he was actually born in Wisconsin but that turned out later to be untrue, although it never affected our love and admiration of the man. To this day the phrase "to pull a Houdini" is still used to express one getting out of a tight spot or making an escape. You did a great job in this video, Simon!
I live in Appleton myself, and there's some areas that are named after Harry Houdini in the city. There's even a spot in the flats, where Houdini almost drowned, down by a little wooden building, that had something to do with the first hydroelectric station, on Lawe St. I believe.....near the bridge going over the Fox River. There's a little plaque down there on a stand that can be viewed.
I really enjoyed this one. I was a childhood Houdini fan (no, not when he was alive...) and over the years read or heard so many conflicting stories about his rise to fame. This has put it all together in a very viewable package. Thank you.

As fun as the idea is....I don't think hoping to kill someone by stomach punches would fly as a "that'll teach him" kinda thing but what do I know. I wasnt there. Could b true, I just doubt it highly. In every account I've found, it sounds like it wasn't a planned thing, it was meant to be him meeting fans, it went an odd direction as things do when you basically spit on someone's belief system, no matter how right Harry is still on that, people take things personal. If it was a planned thing....it would have been Harry's doing, Bess included...I like to think he was at his pinnacle, he was tired, he wanted to get away and spend the rest of his days with his Bess quietly. And then just faked his death....his journal is littered with how hard the work was becoming, he was tired man....and for it to happen going from Canada to the U.S. in the great city of Detroit, Halloween.....come on.....Harry still is fooling us to this very day, this is why he will never be topped, EVER....he's bigger than Jesus ha!
I think this might have been the most interesting one so far, though I've loved most of your other bio's too. I learn so much extra stuff about someone that I never knew before, and that most historians don't cover.
This channel/team does a great job of giving summaries about these people, moments in history, etc. I've been binge watching these Biographics videos myself, they are really good for being general summaries of someone's life. However, since I know some of the subjects quite well, I realized that they often miss some details in every video. But that's alright, nobody is perfect and they don't need every single detail. But tye team still does a good job, shout out to the researchers, the writers, editors, etc. The whole team deserves their credit‼️💯😁😔

Great video! I was fascinated even as a teenager. His biography (I think it was "Houdini: A Magician Among the Spirits") was the first biography I even read. EDIT: I just looked it up. I got the title right, but it actually was his autobiography, published in 1924. Worth the read!

One small correction: Robert Houdin was actually a compound surname, the man's name was actually Jean-Eugene Robert Houdin. Also, you mentioned Arthur Conan Doyle - he was a pretty interesting guy, and would be worth a video. Among his lesser known feats was that he was a keen cricketer, but as a bowler, the only first-class wicket he took was off the founder of modern cricket, WC Grace.
Can you do a video on Mikhail Lomonosov. He is probably the most celebrated scientist in Russia. He founded the oldest university in Russia, Moscow State University. "Among his discoveries were the atmosphere of Venus and the law of conservation of mass in chemical reactions" (Wikipedia). He was from a small village and had such a passion for sciences that he walked(!) over 1000 km to get to Moscow to study. He was then bullied by his classmates because he was so much older than them. He was polymath and was good at pretty much everything, chemistry, physics, literature, you name it.

The great northern war was a successful attempt by the joint forces of the Russian Empire, Denmark, Poland-Lithuania to grab or retake land from Sweden. The battle of Narva and Poltava are worth looking into if you're interested.

When I was a kid in the ‘70s, I read about Houdini’s escapes and magic and was interested, then I read about his exposing fake mediums and became fascinated. A few years later, there was a tv biopic on him, starring Paul Michael Glaser (better known as Starsky), and I watched that a few times (through reruns). This past year reminded me of that fascination, because I spent COVID time digging into my family tree online, and I discovered my great-great-grandmother. After walking out of a bad marriage, then remarrying and working as a barber in Chicago, she then had her own farm out west. That’s when she remarried again and became really involved in Spiritualism. She became a trance medium, her hubby was a faith healer, and she was the pastor of a storefront spiritualist church.

That honor was taken over 400 years ago by pirate Henry Avery when his pirate flotilla stole over 600,000 British pounds of loot (estimated to be between $300 and $500 million in today's currency) from the Grand Mughal of India. What makes Avery's story worth telling on this channel is he was the subject of the world's first international manhunt and was never found because he disappeared from history.
@Joseph Wilson There were three actually. Lovecraft ghost wrote Under the Pyramids and an article debunking astrology for Houdini and they were collaborating on a book called "The Cancer of Superstition" (although only notes and an outline survive) when Houdini died.

Love this stuff. But consider doing a whole piece about the relationship between Houdini & Conan Doyle, It's fascinating.
You guys mention that Houdini could've pulled off the greatest heist in history. That honor was taken over 400 years ago by pirate Henry Avery when his pirate flotilla stole over 600,000 British pounds of loot (estimated to be between $300 and $500 million in today's currency) from the Grand Mughal of India. What makes Avery's story worth telling on this channel is he was the subject of the world's first international manhunt and was never found because he disappeared from history.

@Joseph Wilson There were three actually. Lovecraft ghost wrote Under the Pyramids and an article debunking astrology for Houdini and they were collaborating on a book called "The Cancer of Superstition" (although only notes and an outline survive) when Houdini died.
@Joseph Wilson my pleasure. If you are ever in the area there's a really excellent Houdini Museum in Scranton PA run by noted magician Dorothy Deitrich. Its a great source of info. The Fantasma magic shop in NYC also has a good collection (largest outside of the private collection held by David Copperfield or so I'm told).
