Episode #172 of the Fire Emblem stats: Toph Bei Fong. Shit, I was worried she would be the next Avatar character, because I'm not sure how Earthbending works in this context. I think I've got it though. She has strengths in brawling and heavy armor since Earthbending's primarily defensive and weaknesses in riding and flying since she needs to be connected to the ground in order to 'see' things, as well as both types of magic since that requires the ability to read. She has high offense and defense but low HP and speed.
Just wanted to point out, the bending styles aren’t based off of karate, they’re based off of four different styles of Kung fu. Shaolin (Fire) tai chi (water) hung ga (earth) and baguazhang (air)
For those interested in other good earthy spells: Catapult: this would be pretty good for whipping rocks at people but druids don’t get it. Earth Tremor: replicating her shifting the ground beneath an opponents feet to knock them off balance. Blindness/Deafness: throwing dirt in the enemies eyes. Maximillian’s Earthen Grasp: Using the Earth to prevent an enemy and damaging them. One of the most Earth bendy moves. Dust Devil: kinda air bendery but think of it as sand bending Move Earth: Not really battle magic but it’s pretty good earth bender mentality to think of how you can change the environment to your advantage. Sword Burst: this could be reflavored as piercing sharp rocks springing out from underneath you but unfortunately druids don’t get this Magic Stone: literally throwing magic charged rocks at people rocks. Pretty much useless at higher levels since this cantrip doesn’t level with you.
this is really good. made a few tweaks for myself since Blind Fighting isn't available on D&D beyond at the moment: 8 monk/12 druid, traded out animal handling for insight (she is really good at telling when someone is lying, after all), and gave her the noble background (she does come from a rich house, even though she doesn't show it). Upside is she gets that last ASI. Downside to these tradeoffs is she loses Performance, and there's nothing in the build to say she IS blind, but whatever. The rest of the build is damn good and looks fun to play sometime.
Would love to see a Artorias the Abysswalker build, keep flitting between a oathbreaker paladin or a samurai with a dip of ranger for the Sif companion 👍🏻
i have been yelling abt toph being a druid multiclass to my partner for literal months and this video just validated (and sparked another debate about) EVERYTHING thank you
I have an idea on how the wild shape could work either way. You could change the flavor text of it to be rock armor that resembles certain animals. That way all of the wild shapes could make sense. Idk though, just an idea I had
I’m rewatching avatar with my girlfriend and I was thinking of what everyone would be. I was thinking Aang:Monk, Katara:Cleric, Toph, Druid, Sokka:Bard
I'd likely go a few levels in to Sun soul for the ranged attack, at least. Is there a spell or class ability that allows a sanctuary-like aura? I can't think of one off the top of my head, but cleric/paladin spells aren't my strong suit.
me seeing toph: yes yes yes YES YES!!!! me seeing druid: ok? me seeing open palm monk: ok? me at the end: not what i would have done but this is still a really cool build
Yeah, so what would you have done? You can’t really get the spells easy, and also, you get earth elemental with Druid, fighter just makes sense, she is a professional fighter, and monk is just a taken of your from avatar, because KUNG FU (mantis style, what toph uses, is open handed so open hand monk works)
@@huntertheanything4274 ok one cailm down, and two go play dnd. most games don't even get past fifth level, playing a charitor is more about how you play them then the stats, and lastly its all about having fun. if you want to pick apart my comment then fine, if you want to have fun then fine, but if you honestly think this is the only way to make toph then your wrong. this channel is to show how HE would make and play them not how I would have made and play them. just shut up, and enjoy the video.
@@angeryfluuf6514 simple start off with an earth based adjuration wizard and then multi class into open palm monk in later levels. add blind sense, tavern brawler, invest in int, con, and wiz then into dex when you start picking up monk levels. pick up move earth, stone skin, and some other spells and give them some earth flavor.
neal justus, well I asked how you would have done it, partiality because I like D&D and have had problems making this character because I don’t have the book with the bling fighter option, we had to add it as a Homebrew feat, also if you thought when i used full caps when saying KUNG FU, it’s because I like Kung fu, which is why I added the part about mantis style. Also, quick note, without Homebrew, you can’t get blind fighter if you don’t put a part into fighter class. I’m also gonna say, that there is never a best way to make someone in D&D. One of the problems I can’t see past is being blind without using vibrations to see. And sorry if this is too long for you, I have no idea how to compact my messages. 🙃
This is a very good build but I think you missed something that Toph does: Metalbending. Granted she does it later on, but still that is something she learns how to do.
I don't know that there's a good way to simulate that with 5e rules. I can't really think of anything that specifically affects or moves metal (other than Heat Metal, which ain't really her thing). A lot of her abilities could be re-flavored to say they're working with metal, like spike growth or entangle or the like, but I don't know how else you could represent it. Any thoughts?
Yo, I just wanted to say that I love these videos, and that they recently inspired me to try and make a Ty Lee build with swashbuckler rogue/cobalt soul monk.
Great build, Tulok! I wouldn't have thought Moon Druid, but I can see how it works. You've got your rock'em, you've got your sock'em, and you've definitely got your sass; a successful build if I've ever seen one.

Hell yeah! Amazing work! I'm begging ya: Katara next!Water whip, icicle blasts, healing abilities? She's got a really cool kit that would be badass to play. Also Katara is the best. Zuko would be killer too.
As an interesting sidenote. Warlock Genie Earth can really do a ton of Tophiness in an interesting. I took some interesting inspiration for a character from her along those lines a bit like that. not as good as this buid. but is an interesting way to build a Battle Bender. Eldritch Blast doing Bludgeoning and all those Eldrtich Blast Invocations can really allow you to flavor stuff in special ways
They've fought once, and twas a draw. HOWEVER, Toph's pretty busted against earthbenders, as she can feel everything her opponent is going to do. That's why she was able to not get her ass wooped despite the differece of skill.
I would say Noble background rather than Entertainer. Toph used her family’s status to get her way a few times in the series, but only wrestled for fun.
Like I love avatar tla because the amount of attention to detail is so high that toph only realizes things when there on flat land and I find that so cool!
The only thing I was not able to set up on D&D Beyond was the blind fighting, as even turning on Playtest (UA) content does not add certain things to class options, just certain archtypes. But nothing a bit of DM editing can not do. This is a really cool build, I will have to use it as an NPC.
Oh, I just bought the Grim Hollow book and in it there's a new Feat "Blood Hound" that makes it completely unnecessary to take an entire level on fighter. You are aware of any creature that's 10ft close to you, you don't have the attack disadvantage thingy and you even have advantage ou Perception and Survival rolls that rely on smell or sound. That with alert I think are already perfect for the blindness part of the character.
Nice build Tulok. Nor what I expected, but the earth elemental works well. I’d like to request the Predator as a build. Maybe a half orc rogue/artificer.
I could kinda see a gith-yanki. Similar skin pigmentation, both fierce alien races that are big on combat and have a super creepy arch enemy race(alien/Illithid). The only issue would be their psionics aren’t very thematic.
Been thinking up a firebending build recently. Stats go 15 Cha, 14 Con, 13 Dex, 12 Str, 10 Int, 8 Wis. Go V. Human with +1s in Cha/Dex and Elemental Adept (Fire) to get around the fact that everything resists fire. Start as a Draconic Bloodline (Red or Gold) sorcerer, take firebolt and any other fire related stuff I don't mention later on as you go. First ASI, bump your Cha up. Once you hit 6 Sorcerer you add your Charisma onto one damage roll of any fire spells you do. From here start going into Warlock, specifically Pact of the Celestial (Pick Ran, the red dragon from the temple where Zuko and Aang learn firebending together as your patron if your DM is a stickler for you needing one). Cantrips are up to personal preference here but as you grab Warlock levels two important spells to grab are Flaming Sphere and Hellish Rebuke which Sorcerers don't get. Warlock your way up to level 6; when you hit level 3 pick Pact of the Tome to get Produce Flame as the final piece of fire cantrip goodness you couldn't get before and Word of Radiance for AoE Holy Fire. Max your Charisma at 4 warlock (10 total level). At 6 warlock you can add your charisma mod to one damage roll of any radiant or fire spells you do. This stacks with the similar feature from Sorcerer, meaning you add 10 (TEN!) damage to every fire spell you cast, which in combination with Elemental Adept treating ones your roll as twos means that each firebolt you throw out deals 3d10+10 damage, and has a minimum damage of 16 (for comparison, the AVERAGE roll for a standard firebolt at your level is 16.5) and a maximum of 40 damage. If you really want to get the Blue spirit proficiencies take 1 level of Fighter for Scimitar Proficiency and Two Weapon fighting style, but doing this means you miss out on a dope capstone. Rest of the way throw your levels into Sorcerer. This gives you 13 Sorc/6Lock/1Fighter, which is cool and all because you still get 7th level spells, but if you skipped Fighter (you can use an ASI for the Weapon Master feat if you really want to use Scimitars without skipping this capstone) you have 14Sorc/6Lock. This means you get DRAGON WINGS at 14th level sorcerer. While not in character technically is still very cool. All in all this gives you 4*First,3*Second,3*Third,3*Fourth,2*Fifth,1*Sixth,1*Seventh spell slots that come back on a long rest as well as 2 Third level spell slots that come back on a short rest, 14 Sorcery points to spend speeding up, empowering or twinning your fiery wrath or convert into more slots to throw at people, another 2 ASIs to spend chunking up your AC or getting cool feats like warcaster and inspiring leader, plus 3 invocations to use where you want them (I like Book of Ancient Secrets, Aspect of the Moon and Devil's Sight) as well as a solid 142 HP and an unarmoured AC of 15 which is very chunky for what effectively amounts to a blaster mage. Go forth, throw fireballs, reclaim your H O N O R and have fun!
I actually have a home brewed magic system that works really well with avatar characters how it works is rather than having spells you invest points to increase your magical power then you use your own creativity to cast spells for example if you had lightning magic you could use it to brain wash someone by messing with their nervous system or if you had earth magic you could effectively crap out metal
I fully agree with letting characters use claw and bite as unarmed attacks. Natural weapons/weapons that your character doesn't have to equip should count as unarmed, otherwise a punch is an armed attack. Also this video is one of my favorites because Toph is amazing.
This is surprisingly similar to a build I had that was inspired by Udyr from League of Legends. Open Hand Monk multiclassing into Moon Druid was justified as them training to achieve the ultimate reflection of their animal-inspired martial arts schools.
As a relative newbie to D&D, I'll probably never play one of your builds. They seem very complex and fiddly. That said, the amount of knowledge you must have to put these together is astounding. I doff my toph to you, sir.
@tulok the barbarian: variant human 100%, fighter for blind fighting YES, alert feat thumb up, druid yes but i would choose circle of the land (mountain druid) and as a dm i would accept the dmg type rewrite for flavor and i would take 1 fighter, 14 druid and 5 monk due to circle of the land what fit in a way but thats my vieuw on this, but i can see why you did it the way you did. cheers
With Combat Wild Shapes, you could actually pull off a specific animal transformation in the earlier levels (Badger/Giant Badger) with a re-flavor; Have it be her entering her combat stance that she adopted from learning Earth Bending from Badgermoles, the original Earth Benders.
"They're mine." Quote from every Moon Druid ever at least once a campaign. "They're mine." Quote from Toph in the episode "The Blind Bandit." Whoa, she really IS a Moon Druid.
First ive seen this channel. So cool! You got me tempted to roll toph in a campaign im starting in 2 days. The character I'd like to see most is Katara. But, I'd also really like to see Sokka, and Varrick from Korra.
if you do this build and you're at the point where you're still stuck with normal wildshape you could limit yourself to medium or larger forms and flavor it as stone armor in a form that mimics that animal, it's a stretch but it's probably the best way to use the ability without breaking character
I thought he was gonna make Toph turn into a giant mole for a hot second there. Which actually would fit in with the lore, weirdly enough, because the digging motions of (basically) giant moles was how Earth bending was unlocked.
Iirc lizardfolk and tabaxi have abilities that add damage to their unarmed attacks, whereas creatures like wolves and bears have their claws and teeth counted as unique attacks/weapons. Not saying it's wrong to let them have the unarmed tag just that it's not _technically_ meant to be that way.
See I was totally expecting this to be a build using, at least in part, the new Genie class. I liked where this went, just not how I would have done things. And also, I am really still holding out hope for the stone sorcerer going somewhere someday.
So for benders I think just adding in 2 Cantrips they must take is a very easy start: 1st cantrip is just "(your 1 of 4 base bending type) Strike" that uses the rules of bending in avatar for your limitations and deals damage to a single target within 60ft which seems to be the normal cantrip range. I'd say Fire(fire) and Earth(bludgeoning) Strike deal D10 damage base, and Water(slashing) and Air(bludgeoning, non-lethal) deal D8 damage base. Increasing the damage by one dice at level 5,11,ect. as normal. 2nd cantrip is just allows you to move your bending element's element in a free-form non-attack application. You can move and free-like control this material up to 5ft cubed. Increases to 10ft cubed at level 5, 15ft cubed at level 11, and 20ft cubed at level 17. Tip, taking half of the height off lets you increase one of the other dimensions by 2. So if you had a 10ft cube and wanted it to be longer and less tall, it could be a 20(depth) x10(width) x5(height) box. If you want to make a boring box but no this is just for maximum reference. All bending requires Somatic body component movements to cast but never verbal components. You could use the DMG/PHB(can't remember)'s spell-casting points or whatever instead of spellslots. Another thing you could is like Cleric bonus spells from their domains like 3.5e. For example Air Benders get one bonus Air Domain spell per spell level per day. Probably also make Benders full-casters that have no spell access outside of their bending domain(earth fire water air, lol), but give them some medium other bonuses like some monk stuff.
Earth benders should require some sort of class-nerf because moving earth can be really broken in dnd if you're just on the ground. air benders using paragliders too.
I loved the boomer mentality joke, it's always nice to hear some good ole sass mixed in with the sarcasm and puns. Truly epic channel full of goodness.
In defense of going further with Moon Druid, Toph would absolutely love if she could magically turn into a badger mole. Also, the Earthquake spell. Also I will admit that I did make a Fighter/Stone Sorcerer build for Toph that I'm pretty proud of.
Also, to prop up that Druid justification, spoilers, Toph basically retires from the Police Force she created to become a wise old swamp crone.
I think better justification is she learned bending straight from the moles.

this is really good. made a few tweaks for myself since Blind Fighting isn't available on D&D beyond at the moment: 8 monk/12 druid, traded out animal handling for insight (she is really good at telling when someone is lying, after all), and gave her the noble background (she does come from a rich house, even though she doesn't show it). Upside is she gets that last ASI. Downside to these tradeoffs is she loses Performance, and there's nothing in the build to say she IS blind, but whatever. The rest of the build is damn good and looks fun to play sometime.
Fun build. Toph is one of my favorite characters in the series, so this was a joy to watch.
Still gonna request Hit Girl and or Kick-Ass though.
Would love to see a Artorias the Abysswalker build, keep flitting between a oathbreaker paladin or a samurai with a dip of ranger for the Sif companion 👍🏻
THISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHIS!
I imagine Toph having a homebrew feat that lets you expend an extra spell slot or something to make an earth related spell affect metal
I've been waiting so long for you to make a Toph build she is my favorite Avatar character and I've wanted to be able to build her.
A nice earthbind could mitigate a lot of the weaknesses, while still being in character
By a lot I mean one, but it's a pretty big one
HOW DARE YOU MAKE QUALITY CONTENT?!! I AM SO MAD THAT I LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED
Thank you for this. Toph is terrific. Another good intro song choice!
i have been yelling abt toph being a druid multiclass to my partner for literal months and this video just validated (and sparked another debate about) EVERYTHING thank you
I love how his video for stunning strike was her smacking a dude with four bolders lol
I just finished this show a few days ago for the first time
I have an idea on how the wild shape could work either way.
I feel like sokka’s a fighter and Irohs more bard
maybe sokka is a kensei monk?
I was between fighter and bard for Sokka, but all my fav Sokka moments are charisma things
@@michaellavy3269 Charismatic battle master. He's all about plans and strategy, not really about lore and singing.
Foghammer that’s good I didn’t think of that
I don’t do a lot of requests but... I’d be very interested to see your take on Zenyatta from Overwatch
What would you have done?
I saw the intro and thought “this premise is everything I’ve ever wanted, and 8 seconds in subscribed”
This up there with Yang for one of my favorite builds. Mace Windu was real solid too.
Windu was inspired!
"hating everything popular with children is probably the saddest thing an adult could care about" that's fucking deep
This is a very good build but I think you missed something that Toph does:
Metalbending.
Ty lee is the definition of open palm monk
Ty lee is the definition of open palm monk
Great build, Tulok! I wouldn't have thought Moon Druid, but I can see how it works. You've got your rock'em, you've got your sock'em, and you've definitely got your sass; a successful build if I've ever seen one.
0:25 yknow your Aang build did let me realize that 4 element monks have a 20 ft yeet with the ability to force fails. Amd if your DM doesnt let you do cool shit with that, you have a bad DM
Really fun build! Action surging Earth Elemental with Evasion is a crazy kit
Hell yeah! I've been rewatching the show recently (unrelated to it being on American Netflix because I'm not American and it's been on my country's Netflix for a while and I own it anyways) and I'm a few episodes from the blind Bandit which is the first episode I ever watched and that was when it first came out.
I think a Rapunzel build would be hilarious. I wanna see how you do the hair.
I love Toph so much. She’s awesome and well written.
Now this is the content youtube deserves
Amazing work! I'm begging ya: Katara next!Water whip, icicle blasts, healing abilities? She's got a really cool kit that would be badass to play. Also Katara is the best.
Zuko would be killer too.
I've been wanting this character for so long
As an interesting sidenote.
I saw the title, and gave you a thumbs up. Toph is the truth.
"The best earthbender that ever was"
king bumi would like to know your location
They've fought once, and twas a draw.
HOWEVER, Toph's pretty busted against earthbenders, as she can feel everything her opponent is going to do. That's why she was able to not get her ass wooped despite the differece of skill.
They both invented different styles of earthbending but Toph’s actually helped revolutionize her civilization
King Bumi would like to know his location, but Toph already knows where he is.
It's a pretty even fight really
@@bishop6881 I can only imagine what happens if the two trade styles. Imagine King Bumi with seismic sense. Unstoppable.
I’ve been trying to build tops for a month focusing on Druid. Just trying to make sure I do my favorite character justice
This is funny, I was literally just thinking about how to build Lin Beifong last night
I would say Noble background rather than Entertainer. Toph used her family’s status to get her way a few times in the series, but only wrestled for fun.
Toph might be blind but I know I'm not to the need this community has for a build for Anderson Cooper! Please it's what we need!
Practice neutral jing!
Please lord Tulok
Like I love avatar tla because the amount of attention to detail is so high that toph only realizes things when there on flat land and I find that so cool!
Been waiting for this. Please, please, please do Iroh. eventually.
Was literally thinking about how you would make this build today!
The only thing I was not able to set up on D&D Beyond was the blind fighting, as even turning on Playtest (UA) content does not add certain things to class options, just certain archtypes. But nothing a bit of DM editing can not do. This is a really cool build, I will have to use it as an NPC.
i don't know what the Al Gore Rhythm is but it sounds like its good for the environment so sure i'll leave a comment to help that
Again sir, your song choice for the intro is incredible
Use me as your "we want Zuko next" button
Yup. Zuko or Iroh next.
Nah its all about Iroh my man
Been thinking up a firebending build recently.
How about Hiro Nakamura(Heroes)? Doubt they're gonna reboot anytime soon. Build it!!
Far as airbender i'd way rather see Katara though- way more interesting than a monk with fire spells.
To make Druid work a bit better, you could reflavor wild shape so that Toph is just covering herself with earth armor in different animal shapes.
good fit for this if you're not doing Toph... Dwarf? Wis bonus and Stonecunning.
Woah that's really cool! I really wanna hear more about that, maybe I'll use it in my games
When you went Druid I thought it was going to be for the badger-mole angle, so you surprised me with the earth elemental option.
@tulok the barbarian: variant human 100%, fighter for blind fighting YES, alert feat thumb up, druid yes but i would choose circle of the land (mountain druid) and as a dm i would accept the dmg type rewrite for flavor
and i would take 1 fighter, 14 druid and 5 monk due to circle of the land what fit in a way
but thats my vieuw on this, but i can see why you did it the way you did. cheers
Kinda wish you synced Bones of the Earth with the scene a minute later in this vid when she literally used that on the Dai Li
Tulock rarely sincs the footage with the skills drives my nuts (so treat show as pod cast)
Very good build. Been considering, a Liara build from mass effect seems like it could be real fun
With Combat Wild Shapes, you could actually pull off a specific animal transformation in the earlier levels (Badger/Giant Badger) with a re-flavor; Have it be her entering her combat stance that she adopted from learning Earth Bending from Badgermoles, the original Earth Benders.
you have a point about tophs other four senses overcoming her blindness and averaging out into a higher wisdom stat. I wouldn't have thought of that.
Listen I have no idea why this got recommended to me and I have no idea how to play D&D but this is so interesting
Something simple but fun to create would be Ti Lee, maybe not a video but something I tinkered with.
Imagin Hisoka as a DnD playable character
"Good Vibrations" got me
I thought he was gonna make Toph turn into a giant mole for a hot second there. Which actually would fit in with the lore, weirdly enough, because the digging motions of (basically) giant moles was how Earth bending was unlocked.
Toph has the best persuasion performance deception and intimidation of the whole group charisma has to be higher
Hence, Stone Sorcerer!
I thought it was made clear that if it says "unarmed attack" it still effects monk. Lizardfolk and tabaxi for example.
Ngl when you added Wild Shape I immediately thought 'Badgermole!'
Your DM may not let you turn into a badger mole. But they will if they’re cool.
So for benders I think just adding in 2 Cantrips they must take is a very easy start:
1st cantrip is just "(your 1 of 4 base bending type) Strike" that uses the rules of bending in avatar for your limitations and deals damage to a single target within 60ft which seems to be the normal cantrip range.
Mowgli from the Jungle Book would actually be a fun build!
In defense of going further with Moon Druid, Toph would absolutely love if she could magically turn into a badger mole. Also, the Earthquake spell.
Also I will admit that I did make a Fighter/Stone Sorcerer build for Toph that I'm pretty proud of.
I would love for you to make Kiryu Kazuma and Majima Goro from the Yakuza series! Great build as always!
