    As a graphic designer for over 22 years now, I can absolutely say that MOST employers expect you (as a graphic designer) to know how to do ALL of THESE jobs. Just check any recent job posting for a "graphic designer". It's so broad, and they think you should and can DO IT ALL. In this career choice-more than most-you are expected to know it all. It's very hard to specialize.

  • @mzr457
    @mzr457 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Graphic design is a terrible career choice. The problem is that it is too subjective and complicated. The Creative Director can basically make up any excuse or reason not to hire you including you use the wrong colors, they don't like your style or even if you are better than they are. It's also oversaturated and undervalued. Basically there are literally an infinite amount of styles, software programs, industries, deliverables and skillsets in the field. What this means is that when you apply to a job, the odds of you getting hired are basically 0. And if you do happen to be a good "match" there will likely be thousands of other designers you're competing with. And now with AI everything is just getting worse.

      Hi Risha! Thank you for your question. My advice would be to seek out mentors/communities who are already working in the field. Ask them questions about their day-to-day and how they manage projects. Try to get as much experience as you can with projects so that you can see if design is a career path that you would consider. Hope that this helps and good luck!

    I have an Associates degree in Visual Arts. I am JUST now learning about graphic design and teaching myself. I'm not sure if graphic design is my "calling" but I do know for sure that it will have a major involvement with my success as an artist. I am completely out of work and am looking for a full time job in which I can be taught these skills from scratch. So my question basically is; do you know (or anyone else that my be reading this that doesn't mind helping me 😊) if there are graphic design jobs out there for complete beginners without the need for a graphic design degree? It would be incredible to find such a job, but I don't know if I qualify or if such a job exists.

      Hi Jena! Thank you and I'm so glad that this video was helpful for you. Sure! I would say your first step would be preparing a design portfolio that showcases your best projects and also reflects the type of position that you're interested in pursuing (e.g. Be sure to show some web design projects if you want to become a web designer). Next, build connections and network if you can. This can just help the job search process if you have a network of people that can recommend you, send you job openings, or just point you in a certain direction. It also helps to join a design community (there are so many like AIGA, Ladies Get Paid, etc). Hope this helps! I would be happy to share more if you'd like or have a video on this topic. Let me know and best of luck!

    This is completely random, but did anyone else notice the irony of how the GAP website (2:53) had a Black Lives Matter statement but did not featured a single unambiguous black face out of around 12 models. (I did see 1 or maybe 2 ambiguous, possibly biracial faces, but that's consistent with the GAP's brand already).
    Very random, but it caught my eye and that matters -- the action is more important than the statement.
    That said, it has nothing to do with Jene, this channel, or the purpose of this video, so I digress!

You could work on smaller client projects first (maybe a neighbor, relative, etc.) just to gain experience and build a portfolio. The best way to show that you’re a designer is showing that you’ve worked on a variety of projects. Freelancing with real clients is a great start. Hope this helps and good luck!

    In Bulgaria they make graphic designers do all of the things you mentioned combined together for 600 dollars per month. XD
    They get mad at you if you complain and threaten you that you will be replaced. O___O
    This is how Eastern Europe works sadly... :(

    I love drawing a lot, I draw a lot at a very young age. At first, I'm no good, but after growing up, I've improved a lot.
    I then went beyond drawing and gave life to my drawings (cartoon and anime), and I got a lot better.
    I recently do POD designs for shirts, which can be like, for instance, for cat shirts with a funny saying or a phase at the top of the design.
    I'm kind of addicted now, and customers love my designs. I rarely animate.
    I would love a job for that sort of thing, but where do you think I should look, and what do you think would be best for me?
    I don't have degrees.

    Thank you for explaining all of these career avenues! I have been hopping from one of these career options to the next as an interest without even being conscious that they all fell under the same umbrella of graphic design! This video help put it all into perspective and made me feel validated like I’m on the right track. Thank you!

    Do u need to know coding for any of these graphic design jobs?

    • @thecreativejene9591
      @thecreativejene9591  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I would say that you would need coding skills for some web design/web interface/UX design jobs, but it really depends on the role that you are applying to. Every design role is different and some roles have the potential to overlap. Hope this helps!

    Hey Jene! Great video! I don't have a degree in graphic design, but I've been doing freelance for friends using Canva to design social media posts and videos. Is there a salary paid job that allows me to do that?

    • @thecreativejene9591
      @thecreativejene9591  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Katherine! Thank you so much for watching and great question. There are quite a bit of social media related positions out there, in fact. Here are a few off the top of my head: A content creator, social media designer, social media coordinator or director, etc. I actually will be doing an updated "Types of Graphic Design Jobs" very soon so stay tuned! Many companies require that you have a degree of some form, but that really depends on the company on a case by case basis. Many times companies are looking for a person's experience for that particular position. So if you can show that you have skills/experience, this could help as well. Hope this helps and let me know if you'd like to discuss more!

    hi! thanks for such great videos - I'm thinking of becoming a UX Designer, and am looking at either doing a degree route or online bootcamp, if I wanted to live and work in the UK one day what would you recommend I do? as I worry without a degree in design hiring managers won't accept my applications for jobs there! would you say I should rather do the degree route over a bootcamp - I have just finished high school overseas and plan to move to UK next year! would much appreciate nay advice you can give me!! thankyou :D
