I have NEVER seen a car system described so thoroughly or comprehensively, in terms anyone can understand. It sure beats throwing parts at a problem! Keep up the good work and thank you.
im with yall. i have watched alot of different diy automotive vids. eric the car guy and others. this will be tons of help. 30 seconds in and i can already tell. like and subscribe
In all honesty; people like you make owning used cars fun. I was able to diagnose my entire EGR system in one video as opposed to just the egr valve. I did not know about the VSV solenoid and that was my cars issue. I can sleep better because videos like this exist. Liked, commented and subscribed.
Excellent video, explaining, tutorial, lessons, diagrams, instructions. Clear & easy to understand without being condescending. You are a great teacher & have the knowledge & patience to teach professionally. Thank you so much for your time & effort. Look forward to seeing /hearing from you.
I am VERY appreciative of great videos like this. I'd just like to add one additional thought. I have on '01 4 cyl. Camry where I first (without testing anything) replaced the VSV valve and EGR Valve. Cleared the P0401 code but it came right back. Changed gas cap, Vacuum modulator, and a couple evap lines. Cleared the code but it came right back. Changed the VSV again with a better quality (aisin) part and relocated it to the firewall. Code came right back. Cleaned throttle body. Still the same code. Finally, as a last-ditch effort to be able to get my car to pass inspection, I spent $22 (including shipping) from ebay for a used ECU. It's been 500 miles and I haven't seen the code yet.
Mr Lee ive never watched a repair diy video described as well as you have done with this one .As a toyota mechanic for the last 25 plus years a commend your most perfectly described and accurately taught lesson to the home mecbanics with the p0401 code issue.a senior toyota mecbanic wanted to get my take on your video and i have to say im impressed completely and i cant find anywhere you could improve on it its class A number 1 all the way!!!
Thanks so much for your excellent video. It helped me track down the cause of my P0401 error code on my 1997 Camry. It turned out to be the Vacuum Modulator- probably one of the easiest components to replace in the EGR subsystem. I used to love working on cars back in college and shortly there after, from about 1980 to 1990. My cars tended to be from the early days of emission controls, so they were very simple to fix. Then I got busy with life. This is my first attempt working on a relatively modern car, and your video really helped me understand the troubleshooting and repair steps. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
For the first time in all my life i could understand how this EGR system works, i'm having a nightmare with one 4sfe toyota camry, in brazil, and nobody knows how to fix it here, so I'm graduating on TH-cam. kkkk, and finally i found one good teacher to this EGR crazy systens. thanks so much bro.
I rarely comment on these videos but this is one of the absolute best I've ever seen. Great explanation, easy to follow along with and thourough. Good job man
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. You have a gift for clear communication of automotive concepts and how to diagnose problems. By far the best video on this topic!
Awesome video Justin, you saved me $240.00 dealer quote to fix problem. Turned out to be the P Q ports were clogged. Cleared them out with a paper clip and no more P401 code. Can't thank you enough!
Thanks for your help. I was able to use your breakdown of the system to find out that the vacuum modulator in my 95 Corolla needed replacement. I did everything else you discussed except the modulator. I ended up pulling the vacuum modulator out of another 95 Corolla we have, to compare. I guess the diaphragm in the vacuum modulator in the first car broke, but the second car's modulator worked properly. Thanks again!! :)
I know you posted this some months ago - but this is the best how to diy video, great explanations, great camera work, you went through the entire system of possible reasons for the code - thank!!!!
Checked out your whole channel. This is your most watched video and most of your watched videos are about cars. I think if you made more scion xb videos, you probably would have had a million sub! The precision on your video, throwing in the problem and troubleshooting it, very helpful. Thank you
An articulate and thorough step by step explanation of the EGR circuit on my Camry. My Idle went to hell and now I can test the individual components myself. I wish my VSV switch wasn't buried under the backside of the engine. But Thank you, Well done
Best explanation of EGR / check engine light. Great illustration on board with the diagram - theory and then to real life testing on car. Good Job, one of the Best videos on car repair. Please do make more videos. Thank You.
Thanks, man. Great explanation, you have helped lots of people with this. Way to go! i'll add my gratitude to all the other people that have commented.
Wow! Every time I need help with the EGR I always come back to this video and it always helps me. Thank you very much for another job I’m sure I will wrap it most likely it’s my switching valve. Take care buddy!
I was about to buy a egr. But with this video. I tested everything like he explained and the only problem my car had was a plugged vacuum line in the throttle body I took it out and cleaned it with a throttle body spray solvent.I spend only 6 dollars for the can and fix the car problem no more check engine nice I'm happy.
Great video! Outstanding description of each working component for the system, how they communicate with each other and visual demostration of testing. Thanks so much this video!
THANKS for the informative video. You are really good at explaining things! I'm going to use this information to test my EGR system instead of throwing parts at my car.
I removed the entire EGR assembly for cleaning. I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three nuts in the back and good luck reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler, on my Toyota PRIUS Gen 3. Good video!
Dude, thats a really nice and very well explaination of all the components on the intake manifold, and also a good way to troubleshoot any problem related to the intake ,thanks for the video and keep the good work, you just got one more suscriber to you channel!!👍👍👏👏
What an awesome troubleshooting video of the EGR system, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I will use this to diagnose a 2002 Camry with your information/lesson! Thanks again!
Justin Le, Fantastic video! Similarly to Cody A, I was not getting any vacuum from my throttle body. I sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner into the vacuum tunes and I finally have one working... But the other is really stubborn and hasn't given in... keep spraying the carb cleaner? or is there something else I should do eventually? Thanks!
I'm having so many issues keeping my Estima tcr11 running when hot. Got a suspicion it's EGR and this has to be best and most well described vid on Web. Still not sure if it's EGR but now I know how the system work. THANK YOU 👍🏻😁
Looking at your diagram I finally realized how the two vacuum nippled lines from above the throttle body plate area get blocked with dirty exhaust at the nipples on the top of the throttle body that normally would provide the vacuum modulator with its’ sources of altering throttle plate area vacuums. Maybe these tubes are metered down internally? Exhaust gas from of of the exhaust supply line going to the EGR Valve is also supplying exhaust gas back thru the bottom of the broken vacuum modulator, exhaust that is being sucked back thru the inside of the vacuum modulator back towards the two throttle body vacuum nipples, that feed varied vacuums, when totally unblocked, to the vacuum modulator. I tested my EGR with vacuum at idle, killing the engine as it should and with the engine off i could use vacuum to open the EGR valve and hear the EGR valve close when vacuum was released. I replaced the vacuum modulator but kept getting EGR codes, so in desperation, (since the VSV switch is buried under the engine on my 1997 2.2L) I did, with a cold engine, to avoid a fire, tube spray throttle body cleaner down all 3 nipples ports above the throttle plate area using the accessory tube sprayer inserted in these nipples and the EGR code and check engine lights that kept reappearing just disappeared with one short disconnect/reconnect of the battery ground wire and have not returned for many months in my daily use car. Been around town and thru 70 highway miles at 75 mph. The modulator replacement part was like $25 bucks, and throttle body cleaner, with a small push on spray tube is not a huge expense. Use nitrile gloves because that cleaner probably contains nasty stuff, evaporates very coldly and obviously don’t breath it or spray it in a confined area. Safety First. Good luck to all!
Would also be worth describing cleaning the intake port. Mine was horrendously clogged. I think the process of cleaning it out caused some of the gunk to go back into my new EGR (which was probably fine). I think my next step is to test the vacuum as you showed. Thanks again!
I enjoyed watching this, and I hope to learn from it for future reference on other related systems. I hope you continue with more tips & many blessings your way.
Thank you Justin, I have this problem with my Toyota Tacoma 2001. I cleaned the valve EGR first...after changed the valve EGR...after cleaned the lines, but the ligth check engine and the error code 401 is on. I will test the solenoide and the valve VSV like you. Thanks so much.
Nice video. I did try the EGR test where I applied vacuum directly to the tube on top of the EGR valve. It dramatically reduced the RPMs but when I stopped applying vacuum it did not go back to where it was and now it almost dies and I can see it continually trying to increase the throttle by pressing and retracting the thing that pushes the bottom of the manual throttle control inside the engine bay. Does this mean that my EGR valve is stuck? Or what? Any help.
VSV have a magnetic solenoid that can be energized either way plus or minus. The service manual for mine says that when energized if you can blow through it replace it. (2003 Camry 4cyl no egr valve) Good video: explained that there should be no extra air flow when cold starting and warm up.
awesome video man! really good to see the diagram and explanation as to whats the egr system does, that was really helpful. I'm getting intermitted engine light come on with P0401 code. Sounds like the vsv is a common issue so may look to change that out
Very educational video. I have check engine light on. After watching video I tested my VSV and it is open all the time between ports. You can hear it click when applying voltage but it does not change the flow (open or close between ports). It is open all the time. Bad VSV? 1996 Toyota RAV4
thank you for this video very helpful. i am trying to get rid of a p0402 code but haven't been able to do so. i've replace the egr and vacuum modular so but never thought about the vsv
They are called alligator clips. they are really cheap online. If you want to back probe a connector, I use sewing needles with an alligator clips. No need to buy a ridiculous expensive set.
That was informative, I have a 87 supra that someone took off the egr value can I delete or do I have to reinstall it having problems finding the parts and could that be the reason that the car won't stay running
good vidio thanks for showing us .question if the avcume switching valve hsa gone would it cause over reving from strt ? it takes a good while before engine revs die to a 1,000 rpm ,and fuel consumption is high .ive ? cheers Ant from wales UK .
What a humble great mechanic, thank u so much Justin , the emission system is the more complicated system for me before this video but I asked u two things first get rid of the music with videos because make the explanation hard to hear it and plz could u explain the whole emission system like VSV for Vapor Pressure SensorVapor Pressure SensorCharcoal Canisterwhat their functions ?
Great video, very informative; at 8:36 min., it sucking on your fingers, I have no vacuum pull at those ports at the throttle body, is there an easy or simple fix? Thanks.
Thanks for the excellent overview! I am running a manual 1,33 L 2010 Corolla (1NR-FE) here in Finland. It whistles under cold starts in the winter, particularly when upshifting between gear 2, 3 and 4. I just noticed that it has also started to burn oil (about 1/2 L in 500 km; 10 L per year?!). There was some black soot in the tailpipe when I checked so it is not a leak. I had suspicions about the EGR system earlier but the local mechanic suspected the whistle was coming from the bearings in the belt tensioner. I am currently running it with the original Toyota full synthetic 0W-20. Having added a half-liter yesterday the oil cap was difficult to open, indicating there is a vaccuum (under-pressure). Any tips on where to start? Could it be the PCV valve?
Great video, I learned a lot. My issue now is that one of the three vacuum take offs at the throttle body has an obstruction. ( it has less vacuum than the other two). I can't get get it open. Any ideas? Thanks
I have NEVER seen a car system described so thoroughly or comprehensively, in terms anyone can understand. It sure beats throwing parts at a problem! Keep up the good work and thank you.
I agree, very impressive, well done!
TurboFo_Oil_Changer Porsche_Light_Saver I third that. Awesome video
Couldn't have said it better myself. So I didn't. Bravo, young man!
im with yall. i have watched alot of different diy automotive vids. eric the car guy and others. this will be tons of help. 30 seconds in and i can already tell. like and subscribe
Maurice P you said what I tried to say. Good work Justin.

I need to check the VSV solenoid on my Toyota corolla. I cleaned the EGR valve and replaced the egr modulator. I'm still getting rough idle. 🍺😎👍
This is the best EGR system explanation I've seen
for real man
Excellent video, explaining, tutorial, lessons, diagrams, instructions. Clear & easy to understand without being condescending. You are a great teacher & have the knowledge & patience to teach professionally. Thank you so much for your time & effort. Look forward to seeing /hearing from you.
Damn bro, you should be a professor. You explain the components and processes really well! Also you just saved me probably 1500 bucks. Thank you!!!!
Thorough, methodical, articulate, easy to comprehend. Absolutely beautiful job :) Thanks!
Very practical and useful. Justin shows you the theory and then shows you how to determine if you have a problem with the various parts.
I am VERY appreciative of great videos like this. I'd just like to add one additional thought. I have on '01 4 cyl. One of the best-most informative "fix it" videos I've ever seen. Bravo.

I love the diagram you used to explain the EGR system and the several examples to check and diagnose it!! great Teacher!!

Dude. You rock. Bought a $55 hand vac pump and diagnosed my modulator was bad, the one u said hardly ever goes bad lol. Saved big bucks bro. Thanks.

This may be the best tutorial that I have ever seen on TH-cam. Great job and presentation.
I rarely comment on these videos but this is one of the absolute best I've ever seen. Great explanation, easy to follow along with and thourough. Good job man
Excellent job, great diagram of how the EGR system and associated parts work together.
This is one of the best explanations on EGR systems I've ever seen. Great job!
I've used your video twice to keep my Toyota working well. I can't thank you enough.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. You have a gift for clear communication of automotive concepts and how to diagnose problems. By far the best video on this topic!

Finally I fully understand the EGR system. Thank you Mr. Justin Le
Dude this video is SO helpful. I like that you gave an overview as to how the whole system works, it helps build that understanding. Thank you!
Will you marry me?
Thanks for your help. I was able to use your breakdown of the system to find out that the vacuum modulator in my 95 Corolla needed replacement. This is the kind of video that should be trending. Wish I had this dude as my neighbor.
Amazingly helpful. So clearly and thoroughly explained. The whiteboard diagram really helped to make sense of what and WHY to look for. Thanks Justin.
Best explanation of EGR / check engine light. Great illustration on board with the diagram - theory and then to real life testing on car. Good Job, one of the Best videos on car repair. Please do make more videos. Thank You.
These guys you know show the real world approach. Kudos!
Thanks alot. This is the best detailed and simple diagnosis on TH-cam
The use of one of my favorite jams in this video is awesome as well as the great explanation.
Thanks bro! I'm grateful we have professors like you here at youtube university
Excellent explanation of how to diagnose the emissions system. This is the best video I've seen on this subject matter. Thank you!!!
Thanks, man. Great explanation, you have helped lots of people with this. Way to go! i'll add my gratitude to all the other people that have commented.
you make my day today Justin. my VSV is faulty, every other part tested are okay. thanks
Thanks Justin, I actually feel like I got smarter. LOL, guess you can teach old dogs new tricks. Fantastic instructor, I like your style.
Wow! Every time I need help with the EGR I always come back to this video and it always helps me. Thank you very much for another job I’m sure I will wrap it most likely it’s my switching valve. Take care buddy!

Great video! Outstanding description of each working component for the system, how they communicate with each other and visual demostration of testing. Thanks so much this video!
Excellent video sir. I like the way you explain things thoroughly and I especially like the white board diagram! Cool beat in the background too.
Excellent explanation of how the EGR system works. Thank you!
Good Job, I used you video to successfully diagnose my Dads VSV being clogged and turned off engine light. Thanks for a great video, good job!
THANKS for the informative video. You are really good at explaining things! I'm going to use this information to test my EGR system instead of throwing parts at my car.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining it in a way that actually helps non-mechanics.
one of the best vids on egr ive seen, good job
I removed the entire EGR assembly for cleaning. I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three nuts in the back and good luck reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler, on my Toyota PRIUS Gen 3. Good video!
I love seeing videos of 90s toyotas cuz thats what i own thank u i learn alot from this videos
Awesome stuff. I am doing this procedure on my 92 corolla, and thanks to your video I now have a much better understanding of the EGR system.
This video is BEYOND perfect!! It's EXACTLY what I needed! Thank you Justin Le!!!
Super video ! Thanks
Thank you. The explanation has helped me understand the system and how each component was designed to work. Subbed.
I have this code on my lexus lx450. this has been more helpful than the videos I watched specific to my truck 😅
I'm now my own mechanic best diy video on TH-cam new sub thanks for teaching and saving me $$$
One of THEE best instructional videos out there. Much appreciated.
wow buddy nicely explained, i've searched many videos and yours is very easy to understand no dancing around the bush!! Nicely done!!
You have a talent, keep documenting these DIY videos!
Downright the midst informative video on this topic! If you still have the car, you should make more! Appreciated bro!
Far and away the best video I have found on this subject! Thanks much for making it simple and keeping your camera still!!
You provided an excellent explanation and demonstration of all systems address. Thanks!
Well explained - took me from 0 to enlightened. The system drawing at the beginning is great.
Wow! Thank you very much. This is the best emissions diagnosis vid I've seen yet.
great detailed explanation but, I have a code 71 and multiple lights show up on dash!! What is the particular code diagnosing as faulty?
Bravo, very thorough, no nonsense explanations. Very impressed.... Thanks!!
the best how to ive seen,,,,,,,,,, you save me time and money
Superb video, great breakdown for every component in the system. Can’t wait to fix mine !! Thank you!
Just what I needed! The diagram made sense instantly for me. Thank you 🙏🏽
Justin Le, Fantastic video! Thanks!
this is the only video that shows clearly where everything is, thank you so much I'm just gonna replace them all lmao
I'm having so many issues keeping my Estima tcr11 running when hot. Got a suspicion it's EGR and this has to be best and most well described vid on Web. Still not sure if it's EGR but now I know how the system work. THANK YOU 👍🏻😁
Nice presentation. Makes everything easily digestible
Sir I really appreciate your detailed explaining and demonstrations which was well received and needed.
Keep up the good helpful videos 👍👍
Looking at your diagram I finally realized how the two vacuum nippled lines from above the throttle body plate area get blocked with dirty exhaust at the nipples on the top of the throttle body that normally would provide the vacuum modulator with its’ sources of altering throttle plate area vacuums. Maybe these tubes are metered down internally?

Dude thanks! and thanks for such a in depth test for code P401 and not talking to us like we are in the 3rd grade...........
(2003 Camry 4cyl no egr valve)
Good video: explained that there should be no extra air flow when cold starting and warm up.
great video, music wasn't a bother to me as some others have indicated, I liked it added some background, and very very well explained. Thank you.
awesome video man! really good to see the diagram and explanation as to whats the egr system does, that was really helpful.
This video is awesome.
Please do more vehicle system videos with diagrams?
thank you for this video very helpful. i am trying to get rid of a p0402 code but haven't been able to do so. i've replace the egr and vacuum modular so but never thought about the vsv
Good video bro thnx so much i feel i can now track down the egr code my celica throwing whatvare those cables you used to to power the sensor bro
I think everything about this video is awesome. My only question is what are those cables/wires being used to run the voltage through the selenoid?
Thanks for the great video. Can a bad vsv cause a cylinder misfire?
What a humble great mechanic, thank u so much Justin , the emission system is the more complicated system for me before this video but I asked u two things first get rid of the music with videos because make the explanation hard to hear it and plz could u explain the whole emission system like VSV for Vapor Pressure SensorVapor Pressure SensorCharcoal Canisterwhat their functions ?
Great video, very informative; at 8:36 min., it sucking on your fingers, I have no vacuum pull at those ports at the throttle body, is there an easy or simple fix? Thanks.
The best illustration by far'. Good job and more power and hope more videos to come. thank you. and God bless.

Bro you are awesome! This is well explained without any reao wasted time. You rock!
