Fellow Georgia low country resident, here! For whatever peculiar reason, chuck roasts are still being sold at sane prices here, so we've been having them a fair bit recently. I make what I call "Newlywed Roast", because I got this on a recipe card at one of my bridal showers 30 odd years ago 😄 It's an envelope of onion soup dry mix (or two, hee hee!); a can of cream of mushroom; a half can of cooking sherry; and a couple swigs of Worcestershire. And yep- I ALWAYS brown the chuck roast!

i make a carne guisada, with seasoning the roast (mostly with soy sauce, and steak seasoning, sometimes oregano, garic powder & onion powder, and creole seasoning) brown it in a skillet, put it in a pot with diced tomatoes with jalapenos, slivers of onions, sliced up green peppers, and taco seasoning and let it simmer on low for a hour and then put it in flour tortillas with refried beans, salsa, shredded cheese, lettuce, and taco sauce or i put it on mashed potatoes as a type of meaty, veggie gravy. and ill thicken it up with cornstarch slurry.

The time I was in Savannah with my sister and her family that lives in GA, our schedule didn't permit us waiting for a table at the Lady & Sons. I've been married for 43 years and I can count on one hand the number of times my pot roast wasn't dry, even in the crock pot! I will try this one. Enjoying your videos! My like was number 1000 so I've got a lot of people who agree with me. :)

    • @stacey5925
      @stacey5925 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

An old school method if your gravy, etc. is too salty is to place a whole, peeled, raw potato in with your gravy while it's cooking and hot and bubbly. Same with soups, sauces. The potato is thought to absorb the salt. It works.

I mix a can of Cream of Mushroom Soup with half a can of milk, I pour it over the Roast and cook on low for 8 hours. I serve it with Mashed Potatoes and a green vegetable. I don’t brown my meat first because I find the meat comes out my dry, but that’s just my experience. I love the wet meat bases and I find them less salty then the Cubes, Great video Paula.

Looks good- Sunday dinner. Where’s the potatoes and carrots? I always cook potatoes and carrots in with the chuck roast(which is how my mother always did it) or Is this just a Midwest thing? I also make homemade noodles to go over the mashed potatoes and gravy. I never thought about doing this with rice- unless I was making Beef Stroganoff in the crockpot. That goes good with noodles or rice.Do you ever cook it with the potatoes and carrots?

@@tennesseeiris701 Hi, T. Iris. You know it's so funny you mentioned the lemon in the water. Since being in food service for a number of years, we once did a survey of people to see if they knew what the dirtiest, germ laden items were on a restaurant table. Number one was the menu itself, and the second was the lemon wedge, twist or slice in the water glass! Under a microscope, you'd be shocked to see what was on the lemon!!! People never even thought about that. I peel as many veggies as possible. Cuke skins are very hard to digest. I also slice lengthwise and run a spoon down the center to scoop out the seeds -- also hard on digestion and diverticulitis.

    • @lesliesmith719

And you do not use a super large fork and repeatedly stab the meat because the juices will come out And she was tearing her meat too. Use tongs instead. Her flame was not high enough either.
Also never sear in a non stick pan like she did. You want fond (the bits from roast to stick to pan) so afterwards you put some water into the seared pot and scape the bottom of pan releasing all the bits. It will turn the water brown and it is where all the flavor is. Then put the seasoned water from pot into the crockpot. Also the dark brown water will make your gravy very brown.
Her gravy was not a dark brown because of the above. Her color was not that appetizing.
      .

Well I learned something today. I had no idea you could put a slow cooker crock directly over open flame on the stove. All those years…smdh

Don't do it. Ceramic was not meant for direct heat. It will crack.

I thought you supposed to bring liquid to a boil then shut it off before you add your slurry...thickens quicker...

This looks so good. You asked what is something I'd like to have you make. I'd like to know how to make wild rice & mushroom soup. I'd like some meat in it. Thank you

What is in your house seasoning. Where can you buy it or do you give the recipe out for it to?

I love Pot Roast and the slow cooker is the best way to cook it. I add everything that you do except the beef broth. I will add it the next time Ai make one. I also add fresh mushrooms, so tender and delicious. I always serve mine with Mashed Potatoes! Yummy.❤️

My word! Not only did I learn how to make the best pot roast but I had NO IDEA that I could put my crock pot pan on the fire to reheat it!!! That is a major game changer for me!! Thanks Paula!

Vegetable oil is bad, I'd use Olive oil!

I thicken my gravy right in the crock pot. Take the roast out to rest, turn the cooker to high and add the corn starch and water. One of my favorite dinners.

If you have a gas BBQ grill, you can use it to brown your roast. (No skillet or stove splatters to clean!)
