This channel is ridiculously underrated. Seriously, the best channel for consistently, reliable reviews on recording tech. There is seriously none better and you deserve a lot more attention than you get. You deserve *millions* of subs and I am not one to just say that all willy nilly. You really do deserve that much 👍

After learning more about analog microphones over the past 2 years, I seriously can't stand USB microphones anymore, haha. I'm going with either a Bluebird or a Baby Bottle. I've used Blue before, so I can trust them.

To me the Spark and Baby Bottle had similar sounds, however the Baby Bottle was a bit more pronounced in its tone. The Bluebird just sounded like it was missing something, it was almost like at certain ranges it just went flat and kinda muddy. I will say that my hearing is kind of bad (years of loud music and working in shops without hearing protection) so I realize I might have a whole different experience than other people with the mic sounds, but that is my opinion on the but I would say given the similarity in sound I would go for the Spark....if I could afford it of course LOL.

  • @trazac
    @trazac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I really liked the Baby Bottle's texture with the instruments, it sounded fuller. That's probably due to the lack of rejection from the rear, allowing the fullness of the instrument's sound to be presented in an organic way. Perhaps if there were some sound treatment on the microphone to prevent sounds from reaching the rear of the capsule, I would feel differently about the quality of the sound.

Having owned the original Bluebird and Spark, and having heard the Baby Blue Bottle, I think your evaluation is pretty spot on. The Baby Blue Bottle has girth and mass-and less sibilance. I'd say a go to mic for certain singers, but not all. I dig my Bluebird. The Spark can be a problem solver. It works well on almost everything ( wouldn't grab it for kick drum, but...). They are all capable, very high quality microphones. One can make records with these microphones.

    • @LameLifeOfKelsey

I'm stuck between getting the bluebird or the spark. It sounds like the spark is best for vocals but the bluebird is best for instrumentals & i do both! The baby bottle is great but a bit too pricey for me unfortunately lol. Would you say the two are decently similar?

Amazing review, When you where speaking I personlly could not tell much of a difference. And I just found a used Spark for cheap, and it sounded great in this video so I might just get it, even tough what I want is the Shure SM7B, but I can't find it for cheap because they always get sold so fast on the used market where I live, and not on the cheap either. I think the Spark should be more than plenty for my needs, I have been using a cheap XLR mic for years now, like litterly 5 USD and I mean, its not terrible, not for that price, with a good audio interface its in fact pretty decent, but I want a bit more than decent :P

Bluebird has a nasty upper mid boost compared to the other mics. It’s a very ill-advised frequency to boost, much lower than the ‘presence’ band typical of vocal-optimized condenser mics, and sounds like the 2.5kHz area often dipped even on flatter mics for vocal use. It’s hard to think of any use for the Bluebird.
I’m occasionally asked for advice regarding Blue mics. Thanks so much for doing the work. I’ll refer all requests to you.

Great review. I own a Bluebird and love it. I agree on the baby bottle for vocals but the bluebird sounded the best on the electric guitar to me.Even though it totally makes sense to do the review Direct input, I think all 3 mics are pretty decent and when used for vocals with a mic preamp/ compression and or parametric eq, they will all sound great for each of their price brackets.

When price is taken into consideration, The Bluebird tends to win out for me. But that's just because for what I do (vocals AND instrument recording), it has the best (in my opinion) sound-to-money-I'm-spending-on-it ratio.
Or rather, it will, when I buy it.
Then again... Reverb has some pretty sweet deals on the Baby Bottle from time to time. Might just wanna scrounge up that extra Grant.
Anyhoo, great review, I appreciate it. You've earned yourself a sub, because I really loved the song you sang at the end there.

Thank you for this video. I've been thinking between the spark and bluebird for days to start my beginner home recording setup. I paused and considered my own thoughts before the end of the video and I kinda felt the electric guitar got slightly muddy on the baby bottle, but it shines on vocals with a hair of extra clarity. The spark and bluebird were extremely identical throughout and seemed to be more jack-of-all-trades mics whereas the baby bottle is more purpose built. Thanks to this video I'm thinking the spark is what I'm looking for as a novice to recording and maybe move to having more specific-use mics later on down the line.

For your spoken word, I prefer the Spark for a more "broadcast" profile; for your singing, the Baby Bottle; for a spoken word profile, for voice over/narration/reader profile the Baby Bottle. It has a very honest mid without mud and is quite articulate without being presence heavy. For acoustic guitar, the Bluebird for presence/brilliance; the Baby Bottle for mid without boom or mud. I believe I would mic a classical with cedar top with the Baby Bottle and an acoustic dreadnaught with the Bluebird. I'd listen to brightness, though, since I believe the Bluebird could be overly bright. The same for darkness with the Baby Bottle. A classical or small body acoustic with darker voice might do better with the Bluebird to brighten it up somewhat. All three seem like great mics.

Thanks again. Cheers.

I own a Baby Bottle, so i guess I'm a bit biased, but I completely agree with the verdict; The Baby Bottle was the winner for vocals; it had a rounded freq. response, where the 2 others sounded ,ore harsh. The Bluebird really had a great "spark" on the cabinet and ac. guitar, and the Spark was kind of close behing. The Baby Bottle seemed a bit muffled on both cabinet and ac. although still professional sounding.
By the way: I own the original BBB that I bought in 2004. What's the difference between that one and the reissued (?) "SL"-version? Thanks for the video!

The Spark and Bluebird are kind of sibilant on acoustic and don't have much body. The Baby Bottle is warmer and has more body on acoustic and if you cut out some of the low frequencies that cleans it up a lot and the highs are still really smooth. With the other two it's going to be harder to add body back in than it is to take it out with the Bottle. The right preamp or compressor could add some nice air to the Bottle as well.

Wondering the same thing,, seems like the bluebird and the spark sl might be best, because of the range of vocals

Bro just get a Rode nt1. I got that running through a 710 preamp and it sounds like a Nueman 87 now. Without a preamp it still sounds better than most mics in its price range imo

My guy, you shouldn't compare mics by speaking on them one by one, usually you want to record them all at once and only then compare mics, just a heads up

The bluebird sounded the best on acoustic

Don't worry, brother... We all hate you too. Lol feather in some Alex Jones quotes as song lyrics to REALLY rile up your viewers and their dead frog memes. Not a single complaint about anything you've said, other than the baby bottle just has more warmth that I can work with and it's flatter. To achieve the desired sound from acoustic or electric, I'd use EQ and compression anyways. The baby bottle SL just has too many good qualities for me to want to choose the other two for anything.

I just listened to this and to another similar comparison video, and in terms of vocals, the story is very different with a different voice. For the comparison done here, the Baby Bottle definitely does sound better on his voice, though the others sound OK; in the other video there was a female vocalist and I actually thought the Baby Bottle sounded worse than the other mics on her voice (Bluebird seemed best to me, Spark was good - I actually thought the Baby Bottle sounded bad for her).
It is important to remember that the same tailoring of a mic that makes it sound great for one source, can make it sound bad for another. Any one comparison of just one voice is only helpful if you are recording that specific voice, or one with very similar characteristics and in a similar range and style.
That is not to say that this was not a great comparison video - it was (the other I found was decently done as well), but with any such comparison by itself, you need to be careful when drawing conclusions about how the mic will work on a characteristically different source (such as comparing how the mic performs with a male voice and expecting similar performance with a female voice ).

I watched this because of the Blue Mouse review. I think the Bluebird was overall the better sound to my ears. I think the Baby Bottle is too mid forward to my ears and doesn't cut through as well

It’s not about sound best but Bluebird get my vote most people I talk to recommend bluebird. New SL model have like noise canceling or some sort of ground lifter build in. Or maybe some people prefer white noise if that’s their thing.

I tried all 3 at guitar center. With all connected to same preamp. With my ears. The bluebird is best with vocals. Or at least for rap

    Bluebirdは楽器の時に音が前面に出てきてくれる、Babybottleはボーカルの時に温かみと太さがある
    やはり1本のマイクで全てを補うのは難しいのだと改めて思った

Great video. I have been using a blue Microphone. I think it is a spark (not sure how to identify. I moved recently and lost the cable. I have been struggling to find a replacement cable. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

If it's the spark that is an analog mic that would be a typical XLR to XLR cable. I would need more I information if it's a different SPARK mic.
